It's "big-band jazz times 5" when the Mile High Jazz Band and four youth jazz bands present the 20th annual Jazz Extravaganza concert happening Tuesday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City. The Extravaganza is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association as a benefit for youth jazz programs.

Mile High Jazz Band will present “Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts” on Valentine's Day Eve, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Gina's Good Life Music & Lounge, 507 N. Carson Street inside the Carson Nugget. The music is free; donations are welcome.

Visit Carson City has hired Eric Brooks as its new Arts and Culture Program Manager. Brooks brings more than a decade of experience, having worked as an art director and gallery curator for various nonprofit organizations in northern Nevada.

In collaboration with the Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority and the Carson City Redevelopment Authority, the Carson City Cultural Commission is accepting applications for the Redevelopment District Arts and Culture Grants for fiscal year 2022-2023.

This round of grant funding is for projects or events that will take place between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023.

A new outdoor mural located on the north facing wall of the Carson City Visitors Center, on the corner of Carson Street and Washington Street, is the city’s newest form of public art. The mural was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carson City, Carson City Cultural Commission, Consolidated Municipality of Carson City, Kaplan Family Trust and Visit Carson City.

The Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority, also known as Visit Carson City, is seeking proposals for two Carson City murals, one for the interior of the Visitor Information Center and the other on the exterior north wall of the Center.

Nevada Humanities, in collaboration with Core Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno, The Humanities Center at Great Basin College, and with the Department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies at UNLV, welcomes author and historian Isabel Wilkerson to a keynote talk.

CARSON CITY — Nevada artists who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may apply through Jan. 29, 2021, for a $1,000 grant to be used to alleviate financial pressures due to COVID-19. Properly completed applications for the Fiscal Year 2021 Artist Relief Grant program will be entered into a process for randomized selection. If application requests exceed funding available, the Nevada Arts Council will prioritize geographic diversity and underserved populations.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

The Fernley Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to improving Fernley’s community facilities for the city’s residents, is commemorating the progress of the Fernley Community Campus project. The FCF announced the progress and acknowledge key players at a Media Day on Friday, December 18 outside of the William N. Pennington Fernley Complex.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors appointed the newest Board member on Thursday afternoon, to fill the role of Lori Bagwell, who was recently elected as Carson City’s newest mayor. Her seat represents Ward 3.

The City is asking the community to weigh in on Arts and Culture in Carson City. Residents are asked to complete a short survey which will provide valuable information to best meet the needs of our community and create a positive impact through Arts and Culture.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Steve Sisolak, the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office and the Governor’s Office of Economic of Development announced Wednesday an additional infusion of $20 million in to the Pandemic Emergency Technical Support (PETS) grant program, which opened for applicants on Monday.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak announced Wednesday details for a new $20 million grant program aimed at helping small businesses and non-profit organizations that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the seat for Ward 2 will be filled following the election on Nov. 4, another seat is open and will be filled by appointment.

The seat for Ward 3 is currently held by Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who will be vacating now that she has been elected Carson City’s mayor.

Nevada is launching a new, broad-based grant program for businesses and nonprofits that suffered pandemic-related hardship after an earlier effort to offer commercial rent assistance was able to get less than half of its funds out the door.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — The Resident Artist Program in Silver City announced that their summer visiting artist is Kerry Rossow, an Illinois-based author, performer, and co-founder of the She Said Project.

The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum received approval of a grant from the Western States Arts Federation CARES Act Fund in the amount of $20,000.

A Lifetime network Christmas movie featuring actor Mario Lopez Jr. and actor/director Melissa Joan Hart was filmed earlier this week in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, June 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

On the docket for discussion includes approving contracts of new and current employees, a wastewater agreement with Lyon County, a diesel tax and more.

Today, the Carson City Department of Arts & Culture in partnership with the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s Office announced the winners from the ‘I Voted’ sticker design competition.

The competition was open to students grades 9-12 enrolled in any high school in Carson City, Nevada. Students were encouraged to submit creative designs that excite and encourage voting participation.

CARSON CITY — Nevada arts and culture organizations and artists affected by the coronavirus pandemic will be receiving help from the federal stimulus package approved in Congress.

Carson City officials are continuously monitoring the level of risk of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) to the community. In close coordination with Carson City Health and Human Services, the City Manager’s Office along with City departments in an abundance of caution are coordinating the closure of some offices to take additional measures to slow the spread of respiratory viruses. The Carson City Department of Arts & Culture in partnership with First Lady Kathy Sisolak on Thursday proudly announced its inaugural Arts Initiative exhibition, “The First Lady Presents … Ronnie Rector,” at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council announced the awarding of $22,639.60 in statewide grants to support individual artists in the production and presentation of artistic projects that will occur between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2020.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "Faces and Places" by nine northern Nevada artists in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs through February 27, 2020. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room; the artists will give brief talks about their work at 5:30 p.m.

Eco-friendly fashion statements abound in Nevada and in the capital city as the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program announced the winners Tuesday of the 2019 Wearable Recyclables art contest.
