On Tuesday, March 15, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by artist and curator Paul Baker Prindle. His illustrated talk, Museum Work: Increasing Creative Capital, is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series.

The talk will take place at 7pm at the Community Development building (formerly “the BRIC”), 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Paul preceding the event at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

From boom to bust, life in Virginia City during its heyday inspired many dreams of finding fortunes in the ground but also the reality of living in a tough mining town.

Race. Family. Gender. The American Dream. These themes still resonate decades after black playwright Lorraine Hansberry first wrote “A Raisin in the Sun.” Hansberry defied convention by writing the breakthrough composition, the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway.

The University of Nevada, Reno Department of Theatre and Dance will also be breaking new ground as it presents “A Raisin in the Sun” in March with its first predominantly African-American cast. It will be the premier of the production in Reno, as well.

The Nevada Arts Council will participate in a national research study, known as Arts and Economic Prosperity 5, to measure the economic impact of nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences.

The study is being conducted by Americans for the Arts, the leading nonprofit arts organization for advancing the arts in the United States. The Council is one of nearly 300 study partners across the U.S. that will help with gathering detailed financial and event attendance data from nonprofit arts and cultural organizations during 2016.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975 will bring to Carson City Winter Wine, Spirits and All That Jazz, an evening of wine, beer and spirit tasting, featuring the very best in art, music and entertainment that the area has to offer happening for the second year all over the campus of the Brewery Arts Center.

The Carson City Cultural Commission has been working with Ms. Kendall Hardin, Idea Factory to develop an Arts and Culture Master Plan for Carson City.

This plan was an outgrowth from the Commission’s public workshop that occurred last month with Ms. Hardin. During this workshop, the Commission was able to reach a general consensus on the policies, content, and overall direction of the Master Plan. Many of the ideas generated at the workshop have been incorporated into the DRAFT Arts and Culture Master Plan being released Tuesday by Carson City.

This week's It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Carson City Ward 1 Supervisor Karen Abowd. The two discuss the Western Nevada Safe Routes to School Program, which delivered books as part of the Ride for Reading event last week at area schools.

Everyone mark your calendars for Friday, Oct. 9, to join Carson City Supervisor, Karen Abowd, Ward I, for her monthly Walk-about at Mills Park.

This month, in addition to whatever things folks want to bring up, Abowd would like to focus on Arts and Culture in Carson City and ways they can be promoted not only for the joy these things bring, but also as a component to bolstering local economy and tourism.

Embracing the area's design and manufacturing community, the Capital City Arts Initiative's [CCAI] exhibition, Industrial Art, is now at the Carson City Library. The show, previously at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, will be available at the Library through November 19.

The Library will host a public reception for Industrial Art on Friday, October 2, 3:30-5pm in honor of Manufacturer's Month [October]. The Library’s MT1 training room and the Digitorium will also feature students’ manufacturing activities during the open house event.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Divergence by artist Katie Lewis at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from October 2, 2015 - January 21, 2016. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, October 2, 5-7pm and Ms. Lewis will give an artist talk at 5:30pm.

Plane lovers and history buffs are in for a treat today. A rare B-17 bomber is making a stop at the Carson City Airport and will be available for rides and tours. Dancers can choose from country line dance at Carson Lanes or swing dance at El Charro Avita. Capital Eats inside of Westside Pour House just started a Tuesday night Basque dinner, but you’ll want to call for reservations and information on this week’s menu. Get your wing fix Firkin and Fox: it’s all you can eat chicken wings today. Save room for dessert, though, National Ice Cream Cone Day is worth celebrating.

The Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, "Tow'ring High", by artist Deon Reynolds at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room from July 8 – November 10, 2015. Community Center is located at 851 E. William Street, Carson City. The show's title comes from the state song, "Home Means Nevada."

As part of the citywide music festival, Jazz & Beyond, the Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art, 5-7pm, in the Carson City Community Center lobby, Tuesday, August 18 prior to the 7pm "Music of Motown" concert. The lobby will open at 5pm and the public is cordially invited.

Talent call for Latino performing and visual arts, food trucks, community organizations for Dia de La Gente, a celebration of the Latino arts and culture, food and community for all ages.

The event is Saturday, October 10, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. Multiple space venues at Reno Little Theater, 147 E Pueblo St., Reno.

Fees for participants: Waived - booth & space fees have been sponsored.

Technical support provided for performances, space for food trucks and booth space for organizations.

CCAI and St. Mary's will host a reception for the artist on Saturday, June 27, 1-4pm including an artist talk at 2pm. St. Mary's Art Center is located at 55 North R Street, Virginia City, Nevada. Considered one of the best of its kind in the world, and lauded by the San Francisco Chronicle as “showcasing music’s future,” the Reno Jazz Festival at the University of Nevada, Reno has been bringing jazz superstars and the finest emerging young artists to town for more than five decades.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, The Driest State: Nevada Watersheds, by artist Nolan Preece at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery now through May 28, 2015. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

On Tuesday, March 31, 2015, the Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by curator JoAnne Northrup. Her illustrated talk, Bringing the World to Northern Nevada is the next in CCAI’s Nevada Neighbors series. The talk will take place at 7pm at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St, Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Ms. Northrup preceding the event; the doors open at 6:15pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1976, will present Men of Worth on Friday night, March 13 in the Black Box Theater. Men of Worth was formed in 1986 by Scotsman Donnie Macdonald and Irishman James Keigher who came together to perform Irish and Scottish folk music, combining traditional and contemporary styles.

The original idea for The Intergalactic Nemesis (a wacky live-action graphic novel performed on stage with simple scripts, a couple actors, some crazy noises), all started in a coffee shop in Austin, Texas.

It’s a whole lot bigger than that now: Enter a sound-effects genius, an emotion-wielding keyboardist, three actors voicing tons of wacky characters, with 1,200 vintage-cool illustrations projected over the stage, all telling the story like a 1930s radio play with decidedly 21st-century spins.

The words of great poets come to life on stage across the state as more than 3,100 high school-aged students compete to represent their county at the 10th Annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals at the Siena Hotel in Reno on March 14, 2015 from noon to 3 p.m.
