Senator Square: Homecoming week has arrived

The tradition of homecoming is once again here at Carson High School. Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated by their senior classmates as queen and king candidates: Tess Corda, Paris Regan, Kassidy Cox, Delaney Fine, Lindy Lehman, Haley Gray, Ikela Lewis, Todd Lani, Asa Carter, Conner Pradere, Joe Nelson, and Eddie Duarte.

A reminder that we have changed our traditional "Open House" format to a Family Night that will be held on Sept. 25 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Some examples of the activities we will be offering are:
1. Each subject area (ie. English 1, Algebra, Biology etc.) will showcase their learning guides and have learning activities for visitors to engage in. 2. Co-curricular classes (ie. Band, Choir, ROTC etc) will perform in various locations throughout the building 3. CTE classes will showcase individual student and CTSO projects 4. Parent University classes will be held for Career Cruising and the 1:1 Project 5. Resource tables will be set up in Senator Square for the Health Clinic, Nutrition Services, College Savings Plans of Nevada, etc.

Our Carson City Homecoming Parade will immediately follow the Family Night at 6:30 and the homecoming game will start at 7 p.m.  Will will be providing a free hot dog dinner to families who attend the event and complete our "Family Night Passport." We hope to see everyone here.

Jr. Cheer Camp
CHS Cheerleaders will be hosting the upcoming Jr. Cheer Camp on Sept. 26, 2015 from 8:30 am to noon at Carson High School in Senator Square. Young cheer campers will learn a dance and cheers, then perform at the October 2, 2015 varsity football game during halftime. All Jr. Cheerleader's will receive a pink cheer bow for the performance. The cost is only $30.00 per jr. cheerleaders. All kindergarten through 8th grade children are welcome. HOSA
This Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the CHS HOSA students will be hosting a car wash and rummage sale in the U at the front of Carson High School in Carson City. Pre-sale car wash tickets are $3 and can be purchased from any HOSA student, car wash will cost $5 on the day of the event.

All proceeds go to help send HOSA students to State and National conferences to compete and represent Carson City. They will also be accepting any donated rummage sale items. Please bring donated items to the school that Saturday morning from 9-10am. This is a good way to get rid of that junk in the garage and help out some students in the process. Bowling
CHS bowling club will begin pre-season practices Monday, Sept. 21, 2:30 at Gold Dust West. There will be a bowling team meeting in the first week of October during lunch. Watch and listen for the meeting date to be announced. See Mrs. Mannschreck in room 231 if you have any questions.

Theater News
CHS Theater students will be performing on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 7pm, “Wednesday Night Live” sketch comedy show as part of Homecoming week. The performance will be at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets are $5 at the door.

From Oct. 2-10, "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde will be performed. A trivial comedy for serious people, "The Importance of Being Earnest" tells the story of two wealthy young men who weasel their way into the hearts of two young women by both claiming to be a fictitious character called Earnest. Tickets are $10 for General Admission, and $5 CHS Students with student body card. This event will be performed at the Carson City Community Center. Seating is limited, so get your tickets early.

Culinary Fundraiser
Not so good at swinging the golf club?  Then join us and some of your friends for footgolf, appetizers and prizes. All benefiting the Carson High Culinary Arts Pro Start and Skills USA teams. Go here for signups and information.

Student of the Week
This week’s student of the week is Suleiman Abedelhade. This year Suleiman is new to Carson High. Suleiman constantly goes out of his way to help others and is always making others smile because of his kindness. Thanks Suleiman for all you do at Carson High!

Senior Spotlight
This week’s spotlight is on Senior Autumn Cueller who carries a weighted GPA of 4.27 and is currently enrolled in four Advanced Placement classes and two honors classes. Autumn has been a part of National Honor Society (NHS) all three years. She will be graduating with an Honors Diploma. She was a volunteer at the Boys and Girls club for about two years before being hired at a Junior Staff member. Autumn is very involved in our drama program and will be in the production of “Importance of Being Ernest.” After graduation Autumn plans on attending University of Nevada Reno and earning her Masters in Computer Engineering. Way to go Autumn and thanks for your contributions to CHS.

CONNECTIONS Gathering in May with special guest Mark Collie

CONNECTIONS Central announced that musician, actor, and philanthropist Mark Collie will be the guest storyteller at the May 16th CONNECTIONS gathering at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City. CONNECTIONS Central is a new organization that uses the power of storytelling to promote stronger, happier and healthier relationships that enrich lives and build community.

Food Bank of Northern Nevada is asking for the community’s support on Saturday, May 11 as it joins the National Association of Letter Carriers for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Mane Event, a fundraiser for Between Horses and Humans, a youth-oriented nonprofit serving Douglas County and the Lake Tahoe area that teaches kids life skills through horsemanship. The Mane Event is Saturday, June 1, from 2-5 p.m. at Cowork Tahoe, 3079 Harrison Ave. in South Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY — In response to the ongoing Medicaid eligibility redetermination process that resumed in April 2023, Nevada Health Link is extending the Special Enrollment Period through November 30, 2024, for those who no longer qualify for Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Carson City Historical Society hosts local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff, who will present a Chautauqua on "Snowshoe Thompson: Superhero of the Sierra" from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11 in the Carriage House behind the Foreman-Roberts Historic House located at 1207 Carson Street, Carson City, during Mark Twain Days.

Join us at the Territorial Enterprise Mark Twain Museum located at 53 South C Street for an event filled with fun and excitement for the three days of "Mark Twain Days" in Virginia City, Nevada.

On the morning of Saturday, May 11, volunteers will fan out across the Truckee River watershed to collect and test water samples from creeks, streams, smaller lakes, and Lake Tahoe itself to take a “snapshot” of water quality at a single moment in time for this important source of drinking water and outdoor recreation.

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will hold a special meeting May 20 that will include the final adoption of the County Budget Fiscal Year 2024-25.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of unlawful occupancy of real property and violation of a suspended sentence, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report. The man was occupying the home of a deceased person without permission.

The Nevada Artists Association Art Gallery in Carson City presents the "Just the Right Size" show with 130 entries by 31 local Nevada artists.

UPDATE 3:11 PM: The fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive was contained to the garage and was knocked down quickly, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. The fire did not extend to the main structure. No one was home and there were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday morning to a structure fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive.

For years, advocates have called upon presidential administrations to reclassify marijuana or deschedule it entirely from the DEA’s list of controlled substances.

Firefighters in Yerington and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office are on scene Monday morning of a semi truck rollover on Aiazzi Lane and Miller Road in Yerington. The entire area is closed to all traffic.
