Events, happenings around the Carson City region during Father's Day weekend

Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.

On Saturday, the Carson City Farmers market returns at 8:30 a.m. along with the inaugural Women With Wheelz Car Show in Virginia City at 9 a.m. Take a train ride to Virginia City from Carson City and rediscover Nevada’s rich history along the way. The Dangberg Home Ranch Neighbor Fair comes to Minden at 11 a.m.

Support local wildlife with the Nevada Wild Horses fundraiser held at the Governor’s Mansion at 5 p.m. During the night, listen to live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant or share a few laughs at the Carson Nugget. On Sunday, celebrate Father’s Day with a tasty brunch hosted by the Carson City Emblem Club. Participants also can celebrate the Sassabration fundraiser in Carson City featuring a southern-style brunch, bingo, Bea Arthur and much more!

Friday Morning Walk: Eastside Historical Tour II hosted by Muscle Powered. 8 to 9 a.m. at the Nevada State Capitol Building located at 101 N. Carson St. New time! Outgoing leadership headlines Nevada Guard's Flag Day ceremony Friday at Nevada Capitol. 10 a.m. at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on Capitol grounds, 101 N. Carson St. In the final year of his 42-year career and his 10th as Nevada's adjutant general, Brig. Gen. William Burks will be this year's keynote speaker at the Nevada National Guard's 21st annual Flag Day ceremony and U.S. Army's 244th birthday celebration 10 a.m. Friday, June 14, at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on Capitol grounds, 101 N. Carson St. Burks, Nevada's 29th adjutant general, graduated from Wooster High School in 1976 and studied accounting at the University of Nevada, Reno. He was commissioned in 1978 and became a navigator on the RF-4C Phantom jet. Burks deployed during Desert Storm as a navigator with the 152nd Reconnaissance Group, Nevada Air National Guard.

WNC to host Community Night, Journey of Hope in Carson City. 5 to 8 p.m. at the Carson City campus. Combine a night of family friendly activities, refreshments and a great cause with a chance to learn more about Western Nevada College, and what do you have? Community Night and Journey of Hope, of course. For the first time, WNC is hosting a Community Night in conjunction with the Journey of Hope friendship visit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14 at the Carson City campus. Community Night gives community members an opportunity to check out the resources that WNC has available, meet college team members and explore the campus.

Carson City Elks hosts Flag Day celebration. 4 p.m. Carson City BPO Elks No. 2177 will honor our flag on Friday, June 14 with a Flag Day ceremony starting at 4 p.m. at 515 N. Nevada Street. Girl Scouts will present the flags, and Emblem Club No. 507 will hold a flag folding ceremony. All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.

Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den in A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. in Carson City. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Live entertainment at the Carson Nugget this weekend. 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 507 N. Mint 150: 1870 Mint Building Tour. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. There will be a guided tour of the Carson City Mint Building led by Curator of History Robert Nylen from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Vintage Trailer Park Rally in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at VC RV Park, 355 North F. Street. Step back in time with the Virginia City RV Park. The RV Park is hosting a vintage park rally and open house on June 15.

State Capitol Guided Tours at the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Author to lecture on Carson City Mint assayers on Saturday. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. You may know that the Carson City Mint produced coins bearing the famed CC mint mark, but did you know it was a United States assay office? Learn about this history of the Carson City Mint at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City. Paul Franklin, a retired semiconductor industry executive and frequent lecturer at Stanford University, will talk about Carson City Mint assayers and their role in analyzing and refining gold and silver.

Carson Mall Hot Wheels Day. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson St. Ready, set, GO!!! Come and race your Hot Wheels at the Carson Mall! Muscle Powered Weekly Bicycle Ride. 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. Sassabration fundraiser returns to Carson City with Sunday brunch, bingo and Bea Arthur. 11 a.m. at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, at 1500 Old Hot Springs Rd. in Carson City. Miller Counseling and Wellness Center began partnering with Douglas Center for Hope and Healing to offer grief support groups for adults in Carson City in 2024. There has been an amazing turnout, and the group appears to be filling a much-needed void in services to our community.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Shoe Tree Brewing, with locations in Carson City and Minden, was recently awarded a Silver Award in the 2024 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world.

CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has held special significance in Nevada as a month dedicated to honoring and celebrating the state's rich history through historic preservation and archaeology.

Carson City Fire Department and multiple agencies will host Tuesday the 2nd annual wildfire education and preparedness workshop for the community Tuesday, April 30.

Carson City is a Bee City USA affiliate, the first in the state of Nevada. Bee Cities are a part of The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.
