Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 held its annual Flag Day ceremony on June 14 together with several other community involved organizations.

The Carson City Host Lions Club, which is the oldest service club in Carson City, presented the U.S. flags and brochures explaining facts about the flag to all the attendees at the Elks Flag Day Ceremony.

Carson City BPO Elks No. 2177 will honor our flag on Friday, June 14 with a Flag Day ceremony starting at 4 p.m. at 515 N. Nevada Street. Girl Scouts will present the flags, and Emblem Club No. 507 will hold a flag folding ceremony.
All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will follow the ceremony.

Carson City locals that frequent the downtown area may have noticed some silence on the hour instead of the bell chimes familiar ring at the Laxalt Building this past summer. The original Carillon — an electronic device that simulates tuned bell chimes — broke down after ringing on the hour since 1999.

On June 14th, Flag Day, The Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association #137 celebrated by delivering a flag to each resident at the Carson Valley Senior Living Center, Gardnerville. The event started with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and afterward each had the opportunity to receive personal care items, such as hand lotion, Kleenex, toothbrush, denture cleanser, note pads, playing cards, etc. The residents enjoyed the day but the Ladies of Unit #137 enjoyed it more.

Nevadans marked both Flag Day and the Army's 241st Birthday in a ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City.

Nearly doubling last year’s attendance, well over 100 people and many active military personnel attended the ceremony, which featured the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, the Army Song, and welcome remarks by emcee Guy Clifton.

Guests were given a historical presentation of the flag and its importance as the symbol of our country.

Putting Up The Flag

I fly the flag every day. The kids even bought a solar powered spot light so we can leave it out at night. I do it in honor for the time, before the renewed Muslim war against the world and before the “patriot” act, when people here and abroad knew that the American flag stood for liberty and liberation from tyranny.

But now…?

Now I look at the stars through teary eyes as each star is morphing into a swastika or a hammer-and-sickle — or is it a crescent moon?
