Flag Day, Army’s 241st birthday celebrated at Nevada Veterans Memorial at state capitol
Nevadans marked both Flag Day and the Army's 241st Birthday in a ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City.
Nearly doubling last year’s attendance, well over 100 people and many active military personnel attended the ceremony, which featured the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, the Army Song, and welcome remarks by emcee Guy Clifton.
Army Brig. Gen. Zachary F. Doser of the Nevada National Guard presented the Army Birthday message. Doser oversees the joint operations that support more than 4,300 soldiers and airmen serving in the Nevada National Guard. In 2008-2009, Doser deployed to Afghanistan where he served as the Afghan Regional Security Integration Command East Chief of Staff. He received the Bronze Star Medal for service in a combat zone and has been awarded the Combat Infantryman's badge.
“Today we celebrate the birth of the United States Army with the adoption of the United States flag as a symbol of the greatest nation on Earth,” said Doser.
“Our flag is universally recognized by people of every corner on this Earth. It is a symbol of power, prosperity freedom and hope," he said. Our Army, celebrating its 241st birthday today, is known throughout the world as the most powerful Army in the history of the court of mankind. Our Army, marching under the banner of the flag, will never be defeated, by any army on any battlefield anywhere in the world.”

Cobb served in the United States Army from 1963 until he retired as a colonel in 1987. During the span of his career, he served overseas in Vietnam, Germany and Italy. He was a tenured professor at West Point and has lectured at many universities in the U.S., the Soviet Union/Russia and China.
On display at the capitol grounds was the hand-painted, 36-star American Flag, raised above Fort Ruby in Elko County immediately after Nevada received statehood on Oct. 31, 1864. It is among the irreplaceable artifacts stored in the area known as “The Vault” at the Nevada State Archives.
