It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Reno native Dawn Wells, who starred as Mary Ann in the popular 1960s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island,” died Wednesday of causes related to COVID-19 in Los Angeles, according to her publicist. She was 82.

While this year’s safe and sober celebrations may look different, Partnership Carson City, in collaboration with Carson City Sheriff's Office School Resource Officers, is encouraging students to celebrate safety and responsibly this New Year’s Eve by offering gift cards as a token of appreciation.

On a recent Saturday night I went to see the James Bond classic Goldfinger at Carson Stadium Cinemas, 2571 N Carson St. I'd seen that movie when it was released in 1964, and I have the DVD as part of a boxed set of James Bond films, but I was thrilled when it appeared on the marquee because there is nothing like seeing a movie made for the big screen on an actual big screen.

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of its patrons, the Carson City Library will temporarily close starting Nov. 24, 2020, in response to the Governor’s statewide three-week pause and the elevated COVID-19 concerns especially for persons at risk.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. A Thanksgiving Turkey Drop for families in need will be held Friday at Max Casino. The holiday movie premieres of “Feliz NaviDAD” and “Once Upon A Main Street” on Saturday will feature different venues in Carson City. Carson City was abuzz this summer after our beautiful streets became something of a winter wonderland, thanks to not one but two different Lifetime Network movies deciding to feature our town in their films!

"Feliz NaviDAD" and "Once Upon a Main Street" filmed in various locations around Carson City and in Douglas County and are set to premiere on Lifetime on Nov. 21 and Nov. 29, respectively.

With an increased risk for COVID-19 transmission, Carson City Health and Human Services is encouraging residents to avoid attending or hosting Thanksgiving gatherings with those outside of your household and utilizing lower risk activities to celebrate the holiday with those outside of your household.

Heading into the final weekend of October, Halloween and Nevada Day events will keep revelers busy through Sunday making for a jam packed weekend of fun for families and grownups around the Carson City region.

The annual Nevada Day Chili feed at the Carson Nugget and a historic east-side tour of Carson City are among two new events have been added to this weekend's roster of Nevada Day festivities.

With Nevada Day festivities rolling this week without the coveted official parade along Carson Street, some have noted on social media their intention to rally their own independent parades.

While not illegal or encouraged, the Carson City Sheriff's Office is staffed up to make sure that whoever chooses to do anything non-sanctioned, including independent parading on Carson Street, that whatever they choose to do is done without breaking the law.

Celebrate Nevada’s most cherished time of the year in the safety of your own vehicle at Western Nevada College on Oct. 30 and 31. For many there will be a major void in their social calendars to fill on Nevada Day without the annual parade to attend.

The Brewery Arts Center has teamed up with Carson City Toyota, Western Nevada College, and the Carson City Classic Cinema Club to present the inaugural “Made in Nevada” Film Festival, double feature drive-in movies on Oct. 30 and 31, 2020 at the Western Nevada College campus.

Each October, Nevadans turn their attention to the state capitol, Carson City, home of the “official” Nevada Day Parade. Since 1938, the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City has been an annual coming together to celebrate Nevada’s heritage and the founding of this great state on October 31, 1864.

It may be a bit quiet around the high school lately, but this will not stop the CHS Student Council from making their senior year one to remember. Leadership Adviser Ann Britt said, “I am pleased to announce the Corona Virus cannot take the fun out of everything, so we are hosting a Spirit Week, Sept. 25 through Oct. 2, at CHS.”

It is wonderful to be back in school, to again see the smiling faces of young people walking throughout the building, going from class to class with excitement and anticipation, gently pushing at their friends to move along, so no one ends up being late to class.

In a drive-in movie feature, Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents the western favorite "Shane" this Friday at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall parking lot.

In the pleasantly warm evening air under the trees this past Wednesday, Maurice White, candidate for Carson City supervisor for Ward 2, held a meet and greet at Glen Eagles Restaurant on North Carson Street, and talked to an attentive and respectful audience of about 35-40 people.



The Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival is taking a new direction in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival was founded in 2004. This is the first year in which gathering of large crowds at musical events has been restricted due to health concerns.

The Brewery Arts Center normally provides the Levitt-Amp concert series throughout the summer, but due to COVID-19 the festivities were cancelled this year. The BAC, however, along with several Carson City community partners, stepped up to bring safe family fun to the capital city, including the Flatbed Concert Series and drive-in movie nights.

Beginning tonight, family summer drive-in movies begin in Carson City and will show weekly, Wednesday and Thursday evenings through August 13 in the parking lot of the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Space is limited and RSVP is required.

To comply with the mandate of Governor Sisolak, we are canceling the 2020 Levitt concert series to help lessen the spread of the virus. It is imperative that we act according to the directives of the government, public health authorities, and medical professionals.

A Lifetime network Christmas movie featuring actor Mario Lopez Jr. and actor/director Melissa Joan Hart was filmed earlier this week in Carson City.

Summer is in full swing, and recreational activities around Carson City are starting to return in the near future.

From the Carson City Library’s 2020 Learning Challenge, to archery classes at the Clear Creek Bowman Archery Camp, there are several ways for youth to get outside and enjoy the Silver State.

The Reno Rodeo Foundation awarded $30,000 to six families as a part of the organization’s Reno Rodeo Wish program, which supports the foundation’s mission to assist young people in Northern Nevada with extraordinary needs.

June 6 was supposed to be the day of the kick-off concert to the 2020 Levitt AMP Carson City Summer Concert Series. Unfortunately, we all know that large gatherings like the ones that take place at Levitt AMP Carson City are just not possible right now.

Starting July 8th, 2020 and every Wednesday night thereafter for the next 5 weeks Carson City will have free drive-in movies at the Brewery Arts Center parking lot!
