— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work on your own paintings from subject mater you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. — Polka Dot Powerhouse Women's Group: Connecting Friends and Business Allies. Polka Dot Powerhouse is having their first public open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 in Carson City at Red's Old 395 Grill. — Chamber to talk trash at February Soup’s On! 11:30 a.m. What to do with and how to manage our ever growing trash problem will be the topic of conversation at the Carson City Chamber Soup’s On! luncheon scheduled at Gold Dust West on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 11:30 a.m. Speakers from Waste Management, the City’s trash hauler, will provide insight into how trash is processed from the time of pick up to the disposal at the Carson City Landfill. As Carson City continues to grow, so does the trash problem. How long can the current landfill handle the growth? Waste Management has contracted with the City to provide single stream recycling beginning in July.

— NNDA the Business Edge take on the topic of tourism: An Economic Canary in the Coal Mine. 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Casino Fandango, 3800 South Carson Street. Join NNDA to learn about how the Tourism industry responds to changes in the economy. Our event speakers include Bob Potts, Research Director of GOED, and John McGinnes, Director of Sales at the Atlantis Casino Resort & Spa. NNDA’s The Business Edge is a monthly educational series providing information on issues and trends of interest to the northern Nevada business community. A combination of breakfasts and lunches, these monthly briefings offer opportunities to network with local business executives and management teams, elected and government officials, key workforce development leaders, and important nonprofit organizations. — Rural Nevada foster care subject of Carson City Soroptimist Program Luncheon. Noon. Carson City Soroptimist will feature Lori Nichols as speaker during its Program Meeting on Wednesday, February 27, 12-1 p.m. at Glen Eagles Restaurant. This meeting was RSVP with the deadline to purchase having passed.

— Basic Pottery Skills taught at Olgres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. Studio manager, Lucas Lamont, introduces you to clay, in this 6-week open start class, designed to get you started with clay. The syllabus includes pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, and an introduction to wheel throwing. $175 for 6 week class including open studio times or $45 for drop in classes. 1215 S. Carson St.

— Forest Service holds Carson City open house for off-highway grant application input. 2 to 4 p.m. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will hold an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 27, to gather public ideas for requesting off-highway vehicle grant funds. The informal open house will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson Ranger District Office, 1536 South Carson Street. The districts plan to request grant funds from the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division (OHMVR) to enhance and manage motorized recreation in the area. Interested citizens are invited to drop in at any time during the open house and provide ideas for projects and opportunities that could be incorporated into the grants. Representatives from the two districts will be available to answer questions about the grant process and to receive input for developing the grants. — Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes at Black Bear Diner. 3 to 5:30 p.m. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis – no monthly commitment necessary. — Black History Celebration to honor Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford. 4 p.m. The Democratic Men's Committee of Carson City will host a Black History Celebration the evening of Wednesday, February 27 in the banquet room of La Santaneca pupuseria, 316 E Winnie Lane near San Marcos Grill in Carson City. This event is purely educational and celebratory, not political. Jo Etta Brown will provide an overview of the Nevada's black history, including some little-known facts about notable African Americans in the Silver State's storied past. That talk will complement presentation of the Men's Committee's Golden Bow Tie Award saluting Attorney General Aaron Ford's lifetime of achievement as a father, lawyer, distinguished lawmaker and Nevada's first-ever African American constitutional office holder. Doors open at 4 p.m. Casual socializing and informal familiarization with Salvadorian cuisine between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Award reception for Attorney General Ford followed by Nevada black history presentation between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. The $10 admission charge includes the Salvadorian buffet and cold drinks.

— Great Basin Basket Farm Share Workshop in Carson City. 5:30 p.m. Great Basin Basket Farm Share is holding workshops Wednesday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday March 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Office in Carson City at 2621 Northgate Lane No. 15. The Farm Share provides residents a way to support local farmers and ranchers while supplying their family with a regular supply of fresh produce from local farmers. — Carson City School District strategic plan meeting to focus on sustainability. 6 p.m. The Carson City School District’s quarterly Community Professional Learning Community meeting, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 6 p.m., will focus on sustainable practices. The meeting, held inside the Carson High School Library, will be the first part of a 1.5-day Executive Sustainability Summit. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and end promptly at 7:30 p.m. Community members may park along the curb (both sides) in front of Carson High School and enter the building at the south entrance near the flag pole. Individuals planning on attending are welcome to share this invitation with colleagues, friends and neighbors who might be interested in attending this meeting and/or joining the group. The purpose of these quarterly meetings with school officials is to accumulate feedback from community members on how the school district’s strategic plan is performing and suggest ideas and systems to better help meet the goals, objectives and strategies of the district’s plan.

— Spanish Night, Salsa Dance Lessons in Downtown Carson City. 6 p.m. SALSA Wednesdays located at Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio, 315 N. Carson St. Carson City. Classes are 6 p.m. Intermediate Level Class, 7 p.m. Beginning Level Class. Just $10 a class​. — Reno artist work showcased at Carson City's Legislative Exhibition Gallery. Daily.Reno artist Kate O’Hara need only to open her door and look to the mountains to find inspiration for her creations. O’Hara’s exhibit, “Botanica Obscura,” can be seen for the next three weeks at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) inside the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City. Throughout the 2019 Legislative session, the works of six Nevada artists is being featured. O’Hara is the second of the six artists and her display will remain in place through March 15. My work is highly influenced by nature,” she said. “I spend a lot of time hiking and camping around Reno and Tahoe, taking pictures of wildlife. These photos often serve as inspiration for my work.” Managed by Nevada Arts Council, the Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery space is located on the first floor across from the Caucus Deli in the Legislative Building, 401 South Carson Street, Carson City. Since 1985, LXS has displayed artwork by 140 Nevada’s visual artists during the biennial legislative session.

— Capital City Hoops to host no cost youth basketball clinic. March 2. Capital City Hoops, a local non-profit organization, is hosting a free basketball clinic for students in grades 2nd through 8th grade. The event will be held Saturday, March 2 at Carson High School. This event is broken into two one hour sessions. Grades 2nd through 5th grade will be from 10 to 11 a.m. and grades 6th through 8th grade will be from 11 a.m. to noon.
There is a limit of 100 campers per session. All boys and girls interested in basketball, are encouraged to join the fun and show us your skills. — Chinese woodcutters exhibit at Nevada State Museum in Carson City. In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000. Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge. A little-known piece of history of the two boomtowns — the role of the Chinese woodcutters who supplied firewood and charcoal to the camps — is the subject of a major new exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” opens Friday in the museum’s South Gallery. The Nevada State Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Parking is available in the free public lot on the west side of Curry St. behind the museum.

— Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600 ppi. — "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— Nevada Artists Association Winter Show winners announced, Carson City reception on Feb. 23. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 see all the submitted pieces. NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street.

— Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019.

— Statewide presentations on radon safety. January was National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. Cooperative Extension, the EPA and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health urge all Nevadans to test their homes for radon.
