Since 2018, the Carson City 4-H PJ Drive for Kids in Foster Care has been collecting and donating pajamas to the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Kids’ Closet. We started the Drive to give our little ones a chance to give back to their community in a way that is meaningful them, through giving a cozy pair of pajamas to another child.

Carson City 4-H is holding its 4th annual Pajama Drive For Kids in Foster Care. We are collecting new pajamas in all sizes and styles for the CASA of Carson City Foster Kids’ Closet to be distributed to local children. Larger children's and adult sizes for teens are especially needed.

CHS Senior Abby Golik, after being told Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, were temporarily cancelled, decided she wanted to do a Senior Project anyway.

Hello and welcome! CASA of Carson City is looking for men and women, 21 years of age and older, to volunteer and advocate for children that are currently in foster care.

The Nevada Humane Society branches in Carson City and Reno are offering a no-cost drive-through dog and cat food assistance program for pet owners in need.

Despite the challenges assisted living and memory care communities are facing during the novel coronavirus pandemic, the training and certification of team members continue to be a priority not only for communities like Mission Senior Living but also for the state of Nevada, which requires ongoing certification for medical technicians.

At this time while the state is under quarantine orders and people are starting to feel more and more stir crazy, the perfect cure is a simple one: fostering animals.

According to the Nevada Humane Society, no experience is needed to become a foster care volunteer. The most important factor a volunteer can have is a loving, safe home.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, we can expect sunny skies and continued highs in the mid-50s. Midweek events include a Dayton chamber breakfast with the founder of the Desert Pigs cleanup nonprofit group. Plus there's the first of 5 days of Valentine-themed festivities that begins at Carson Mall; an open house at Bethlehem Lutheran School, a CASA information hour, a Carson City School District meeting regarding proposed middle school zone modification. Plus there's a yoga class, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

A Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained volunteer appointed by a judge to speak up for the best interests of children in foster care. CASA Volunteers are Everyday Heroes who come from all walks of life and serve as the eyes and ears of the Court.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Carson City Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, are trained volunteers who represent the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected.

CASA volunteers are appointed by a Judge and serve as the voice of the child in the courtroom. The CASA volunteer helps to ensure that the children are in safe, permanent and thriving environments.

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

A Carson City-based nonprofit that teaches the English language to those preparing for U.S. citizenship — and whose founder was recognized in December 2018 as a finalist for the CNN Hero Award — has been picked to receive a national recognition award from the prestigious Manhattan Institute.

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need Superheroes. We’ve heard a million times that kids are sponges, absorbing all that they see and hear. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes sense that they want to imitate one of the good guys in a show or cartoon. To a child, a superhero is magical. A superhero is powerful! A superhero can help keep them safe.

Catmandu in Carson City is scaling its cat and kitten services back a bit.

Executive director Linda Buchanan was recently diagnosed with Behcet’s Disease, a rare auto-immune disorder after two years of strange symptoms and increasingly poor health. Although Behcet’s disease is not considered life-threatening, it requires a significant reduction of work and stress to keep the disease contained.

CARSON CITY — For individuals considering a career where they will support the welfare of community members, Western Nevada College has formed a collaboration with the University of Nevada, Reno that will enable them to complete an additional 21 credits of a Bachelor of Social Work degree at WNC.
