Things to do around Carson City on Saturday, Sept. 8

Today's column features good news and bad news. The bad news is Labor Day is now behind us and we must re-adjust to a regular two-day weekend again. But therein lies the good news. Another weekend has arrived, and you'll find plenty of ways to enjoy your time off.

Friday marked the opening of the 59th Annual International Camel and Ostrich Races in Virginia City, a quirky, zany tradition that has proven through the years to be an all-around good time. The critters are racing twice on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Work up an appetite Saturday morning for Cops and Burgers, a fundraising benefit for Special Olympics Nevada starting at 10 a.m., then make your way over to Bob McFadden Plaza in downtown Carson City to see the Pirates of Reno put on a family-friendly buccaneering show, "Pirates on the Plaza."

Do you have an event or happening you'd like people to know about? Tell us about it by clicking here, filling out the details and we'll tell Carson City area readers about your event. You can also submit the relevant information, also known as the "5Ws and How," to editor@carsonow.org.
