Wine Walk, Super Bowl parties, standup comedy, karaoke and more: Carson City area readies for upcoming weekend

Heading into the Super Bowl weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the monthly downtown Carson City wine walk, plus karaoke at Bella Vita Bistro and Y-NOT Saloon. The Forest Service begins its first “Ski With a Ranger” at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday. Combined with championship football festivities on Sunday, the Silver State is in store for a wild, good time.

Here's a rundown of activities over the next three days:

Friday, January 31
Support kids affected by cancer: Votes encouraged for UNR to get new Camp Kesem (all day). The University of Nevada, Reno’s Camp Kesem club has been chosen as one of 12 colleges and universities from across the United States to compete to be one out of five schools to be chosen to start a new Camp Kesem chapter in their local area. Camp Kesem is a nationally recognized organization that helps families affected by cancer. UNR’s goal is to get 10,000 votes by midnight Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. You can vote once per day, per email, all you need is an active email address.

Nevada Artists Association New Year's Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. NAA presents its New Year's Show with 124 entries by member artists. Additionally, water colorist, Melanie Walters and potter, Nancy Brownrigg are our Featured Artists and have their exhibits on the back wall of the Gallery. These shows run through February 14. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday except Monday. Coin Press Demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Every Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. we hold historic Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations in the 150 year old Carson City Mint building. If they wish, visitors may purchase a planchet (coin blank) in the Museum Store and bring it to the Coin Press No. 1 gallery to have it minted just for them.

Forest Service begins "Ski with a Ranger' Fridays at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain. 1 p.m. at the top of Heavenly Gondola. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites you to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours begin at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola every Friday at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Join us every Friday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must have waiver signed.

Karaoke Night at Bella Vita Bistro. 4 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Come to Bella Vita have a few of our special cocktails and sing your heart out! Now is the time to enjoy the weekend in Carson City with plenty of entertainment and fun.

Jake Gibbons live at Battle Born Social. 6 p.m. at 318 N. Carson St. American songwriter Jake Gibbons will perform at the Battle Born Social on Friday. He will be mixing the two with thought provoking lyrics and highly energetic performances, it’s a show you won’t want to miss.

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Painting Party at Picasso and Wine Carson City. 6:30 p.m. at 3821 S. Carson St. Grab your friends and a good bottle of wine, cause we are having a wine themed Painting Party! Painting parties at Picasso & Wine are a fun, social and relaxing environment to chat with friends while painting a masterpiece. We take care of the setup and cleanup. Bring yourself or a few friends and be ready to have fun! We provide everything you’ll need to paint including step by step instructions. Take home your artwork at the end of this event.

Stellar Violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn in Concert. 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley Improvement Club Hall, 1606 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden. Elizabeth Pitcairn joins TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for the 10th year, performing one of the finest and most popular gems in the concerto repertoire. And the orchestra and chorus celebrate their 15th anniversary, under the direction of founding Artistic Director and Conductor James Rawie, with one of the greatest monuments in Western music. Performances in Minden on January 31st and Carson City February 4th. Tickets can be purchased via the link above.

Sean Peabody, star of Casino Boss is back! Born in San Diego and raised in the Bay Area of California, this comedian has been exploding on the comedy scene for the last 14 years. With a Polynesian background, he has adapted to all styles and types of comedy.

Carolyn Dolan and Big Red to perform at Living the Good Life. 8 to 11:55 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Come enjoy the night with live music, tasty food and drinks at Living the Good Life Nightclub Bar and Bistro this Friday! Carson City will be rockin’ all night long and you don’t want to miss out.

Saturday, February 1
Guided snowshoe hikes with a ranger on the Carson Ranger District. 10 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows, one mile southwest of the summit of Nevada State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway. The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

Gilded Hearts and other possibilities at the Brewery Arts Center. 10 a.m. at 449 W. King St. Learn a new technique for creating the look of Gold Leaf Gilding. In this class we will use simple materials to create the look of dimensional gold leaf. Then we will tangle and embellish for glimmering results that you will love! Just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Valentine Cooking Decorating Class. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 U.S. Hwy 395 in Gardnerville. Learn the tips and tricks for creating fantastic Valentine Day Cookies your whole family can enjoy. This class is designed for adults and teens. Material Fee is $10.00; DCHS Members are $5.00

Paws 4 Love Therapy Dogs. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. Join Paws 4 Love and read with friendly and attentive therapy dogs! These gentle dogs will lend an ear to beginner readers and provide support as children improve their reading skills. Registration is encouraged. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

Nevada State Railroad Museum Rocks. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2180 S. Carson St. Leave your mark and follow your rocks! Kids of all ages and kids at heart are invited to join us on February 1st at 11am for some rock painting fun! Rocks and paint provided by us! Take your rock home or leave it somewhere in the area because on the back will be added to our Facebook page and ask the finder to post a picture so you can follow it wherever it may go!

February Monthly Wine Walk. 1 to 5 p.m. in downtown Carson City. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss! Held the First Saturday of every month. For just $15 you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away. Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes.

Mixed Media Paint Class in Dayton. 1 to 5 p.m. at Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Ave. Meet Holly The Horse and join us as we paint Holly the Horse during a mixed media painting class Feb. 2 in Dayton. Holly the Horse is a 16 X 20 painting and it will take approximately 3 hours to paint. We’ll be using acrylics. We will have refreshments during a couple of drying times. If you would like to bring a covered dish to share, please do or, feel free to bring your own light snack. Suitable for ages 12 and up.

Super Bowl Bash at Just Brew It. 2:30 p.m. at 1214 N. Carson St. Come and watch the game with us! There will be plenty of fun and action going on throughout the game that you don’t want to miss!

Super Bowl Party at Jimmy G's. 3 p.m. at 301 N. Carson St. Enjoy the big game with Super Bowl fun at Jimmy G’s on Sunday. Drink specials, games and a pot luck will be available throughout the game.

Healthy Cooking Classes. 5 p.m. at Carson City Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 405 College Pkwy. Healthy Cooking Classes begin again Sunday, October 6, at 5pm, with Hearty Soups and Salads, perfect for the start of Fall weather! The sessions are scheduled for the first Sunday of every month.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.
