The Capital City Arts Initiative and Western Nevada College present "Metallum Terrae" an exhibition by Kyle Karrasch in the college’s Bristlecone Gallery, 2201 W College Parkway, Carson City now through Dec. 17, 2020. The gallery is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Nevada Humanities presents A Virtual Salon: Nevada’s Public Monuments — the next installment of its bimonthly Salon series — online at facebook.com/nevadahumanities on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 12 pm PT. This virtual conversation will feature a conversation with historians and activists on the front lines of change about monuments, markers, and the physical presence of history in Nevada.

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church. Heading into the Super Bowl weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the monthly downtown Carson City wine walk, plus karaoke at Bella Vita Bistro and Y-NOT Saloon. The Forest Service begins its first “Ski With a Ranger” at Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort on Friday. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation has begun installation of new “Welcome to Nevada” monuments on U.S. 395 at two entrances into the state.

A dedication ceremony for the Charters of Freedom Monument will be held at noon on Thursday, June 14 at the Carson City Courthouse plaza, Carson City officials announced. Exactly WHAT "ideology" does not let Amodei and Heller do "what is best for the state"? That maybe we are a constitutional republic where the people have a say through their elected representatives to decide on public matters? What a terrible "ideology." I wonder if anybody cares where it came from and why. (Or course, the use of the use that shopworn marxist phrase, "wrong side of history," is NOT ideological…)

Last week Congressman Amodei and Senator Heller introduced legislation to “prevent the threat of executive action designating or expanding national monuments without Congressional approval or local support.” Their legislation would add Nevada to Wyoming as the only states exempt from presidential designation of National Monuments, except as authorized by Congress.

The National Pony Express Association will be conducting its Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express Trail from Sacramento, California, to St. Joseph, Missouri, June 15 - 25, 2016. It is expected to pass through Carson City at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16.

This Re-Ride is a 10-day, 24-hour a day, non-stop event by over 600 riders and horses over the 1,966 mile route of the Pony Express National Historic Trail from California through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas to Missouri. It is the longest event held annually on a historical trail in the nation.

Nevada Vietnam War veterans were honored Saturday in Carson City as dozens gathered in Mills Park to observe the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance and hold a welcome home ceremony at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial.

Frank Reynolds, current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) local chapter 388 in Carson City, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the chapter’s chaplain delivered the invocation.

When Melinda Cash started walking at Lone Mountain Cemetery in search of headstones for her genealogy hobby, she would frequently come upon a bare plot with nothing more than a small tin temporary marker — or often nothing at all — to identify the person buried there.

Let’s get real about the proposed new library. It will do nothing for downtown development and will not serve the twenty-first century needs of our community. I grew up in Indianapolis, went to college in Cincinnati, and lived and worked in San Diego, Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
