— Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. Open Studio Basic Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints. This is an open enrollment drop-in class, no need to sign-up. Tuition: $25 per session or $40 for the day. — Carson City Library Presents: Explore Earth Exhibit. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet, a national traveling exhibition exploring a global view of our changing environment, will be on display at the Carson City Library. Getting people interested in science can be a challenge, but Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet strives to make it fun with a focus on local earth science topic, such as weather, the water cycle and ecosystem changes as well as a global look at our changing planet. 900 North Roop Street.

— Capital City Reads: Carson City Library April program features 'Station Eleven.' 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Happening through April. The Carson City Library invites everyone in Carson City to participate in a community read of "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel for the library’s annual Capital City Reads program during the month of April. Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion. "Station Eleven" explores the role of arts and culture in creating and keeping the community connections that keep humanity alive after a devastating flu pandemic brings civilization as we know it to an end. This book was chosen to align with this year’s theme for National Library Week: Libraries = Strong Communities. Copies of Station Eleven in English and Spanish will be available at the Carson City Library while supplies last. — Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski to speak at Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Brad Bonkowski, Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor and Chair of the Carson City RTC (Regional Transportation Commission) will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. His appearance is intended as a town hall on the still unresolved issue of how maintenance of Carson City's 676 lane-miles of roadway should be funded. A question on the 2016 ballot would have authorized the Board of Supervisors to raise fuel taxes by up to 3 cents per gallon every year from 2017 through 2026. It was estimated to have raised an additional $40 million for road maintenance, but it failed by a vote of 16,163 to 8,351, or 66 to 34 percent. In the absence of any long term funding strategy, the City has been forced to make do with the limited resources it has available. Meanwhile decision makers and concerned community members continue to seek consensus on the issue. And as the City's Pavement Management Plan explains, deferring maintenance saves no money in the long term. It only adds to the cost. The Pavement Management Plan, available on the Public Works website at http://carson.org/home/showdocument?id=60334, sets out a strategy for street maintenance for the 2019 through 2023 fiscal years. It shows the current Pavement Condition Index (PCI) rating of city roadways. This plan is used to set targets for improving pavement conditions at a city-wide level. The RTC's capital projects budget, funded by the gasoline tax, is less than $2 million a year, around $2.5 million when federal funds are added to the total. That's enough to pay for crack sealing and pothole filling along with surface sealing and a limited amount of mill-and-overlay repaving, where the top two inches of pavement are removed and replaced. But the cost of keeping all of Carson's streets in average condition is estimated to be $15 million a year. That translates into a shortfall of at least $100 million over 10 years. Obviously there's a lot to talk about. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. — Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
