A group of local activists have filed a petition the the county clerk to stop Carson City from using public money on the City Center Project (aka Nugget Project) without getting approval from the voters.

Attorney Day Williams, a long-time opponent of the project, said the group started talking about it last week before filing the paperwork on Friday.

“We filed the petition because the city continues to move forward with this boondoggle,” Williams said.

The petition asks for the adoption of a city ordinance that reads:

Pete Livermore has announced he will be running for a second term representing Assembly District 40, which encompasses most of Carson City.

Livermore served on the Carson City Board of Supervisors until he was elected to the Assembly in 2010, edging out fellow supervisor Robin Williamson.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will be appointing new members of various committees and boards at it next meeting on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Those appointments include the city's Redevelopment Citizens' committee and the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Also on tap will be a performance review of City Manger Larry Werner, and approval of a $1,456,110 contract to install a solar power system at the city's wastewater treatment plant.

The Homewood Mountain Resort project, which cleared the strictest of environmental hurdles at Lake Tahoe, is now being sued by a consortium of groups including the Sierra Club who, among other things, wish to stop promised environmental improvements, job creation and economic revitalization to the ailing west shore Sierra community.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, which oversees development and environmental protection at Lake Tahoe, was told it was being sued on Thursday because of its recent approval of the Homewood Mountain Resort Ski Area Master Plan project.
EarthJustice, on behalf of the Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore, lists both TRPA and Placer County as defendants in the lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court of Eastern California. Absent from the suit is the League to Save Lake Tahoe, which implied that it likely wouldn't sue when the project was unanimously approved last month by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's Governing Board.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will consider accepting the recommendation of the Open Space Advisory Committee to purchase 497 acres in Carson River Canyon at their meeting next Thursday.

Part of this property is slated be used for the extension of the V&T Railway.

The board will also consider purchasing eight new vehicles for the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The state's Interim Finance Committee questioned Corrections Director Greg Cox over contradictory plans for running the license plate shop at the Nevada State Prison once the facility closes down. The original plan was for the shop to stay where it is and be run by minimum security inmates. But Cox had also been looking at moving the plant to either the Northern Nevada Correctional Center on the south side of Carson City, or to High Desert State Prison near Las Vegas. He said they didn't currently have the money to make that move.

The IFC also got the final $521,904 bill for the special election to fill Nevada's Second Congressional District seat after Gov. Brian Sandoval appointed Dean Heller to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by John Ensign.

The IFC also approved funding for 20 of the 30 new positions for the Department of Motor Vehicles approved by the 2011 Legislature. The new positions are supposed to help cut the wait time at DMV offices, which have increased since 85 positions were eliminated due to budget cuts.

A coalition of organizations is urging the Attorney General's office to reject a multi-state settlement with the banking industry over allegations of widespread falsifying loan documents and other wrongdoing in the wake of the mortgage foreclosure crisis. New York and California have already signaled that they will not sign onto the agreement, and the Attorneys General of Nevada and California recently announced that they will work together to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by the banks.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with the Nevada Small Business Development Center at UNR to work together to operate the city's Business Resource Innovation Center, under the leadership of its new director Michael Salogga.

The Committee provides advice on matters concerning the development, maintenance, management and operation of the Carson River. Meetings are the third Monday of every other month at 6:00 p.m. There is one opening in the following area for a three year term that expires January 2015:

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on The Board of Appeals in the following categories:

• GENERAL CONTRACTOR
• REGISTERED ARCHITECT

The applicant (depending on the category or if in business for themselves), may need a business license to do business in Carson City. This Board provides advice on matters involving the building codes and the fire codes in Carson City. Each position is for a two (2) year term that will expire January 2014.

On Oct. 20, the Carson City Board of Supervisors awarded a contract to Horizon Construction, Inc. for various improvements to Carson River Park, located on Carson River Road at Lloyd’s Bridge. The construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 7, and will take approximately three months to complete, depending on the weather.

The video reportedly shows Sencion exiting the restaurant after shooting the victims inside, and then shows him shooting B.J. Lejon, 67, who was standing near a motorcycle in the parking lot. Fortunately, the helmet she was wearing saved her life, according to Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

Lejon is seen trying to duck behind the motorcycle, but Sencion sees her. She said she begged him not to shoot her, to no avail. She is still recovering from her wounds.

Her husband, who was inside the restaurant but not wounded, didn't find out about his wife being shot until eight hours later because of all the chaos at the scene.

The sober grad party for Carson High School is back on after a successful appeal for volunteers to help with the event. The event began in 1988, and includes a party at the Carson City Community Center and a bus trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, Calif.

I was just finishing up a column about how far the Nugget Project has come, from a vague, unrealistic plan that left the city on the hook for the whole bill, to an exciting, well-designed public-private partnership that deserves our qualified support.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving approximately ten to sixteen hours per month on the Carson City Airport Authority. The Airport Authority is a 7 member board that oversees all matters pertaining to the Carson City airport.

There is a position open for a four year term that will expire 10/2015. The Board of Supervisors will interview and appoint qualified persons to the board. There is one opening:

Now that the new Carson City Center/Nugget Project plans have answered many of the concerns of critics, one of the last big issues is the 1/8th cent increase in the sales tax to help fund the project.

But that may also be going away, replaced by fees collected from those dumping trash at the Carson City Landfill.
