Events and Happenings around Carson City for Tuesday, Oct. 30
Good morning Carson City, it is Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, which means we are one day away from the annual nationwide trick or treating Halloween ritual but ahead of those festivities is the second annual Boo-Nanza celebration today at the Carson City Community Center that you won't want to miss. Also on tap for today are morning walks and afternoon hikes, a film festival showing at the Brewery Arts Center and more.
Here is what's happening around Carson City today:
— Tuesday Morning Walk to Long Ranch Estates Trail hosted by Muscle Powered. 9 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its weekly one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the corner of Longview Way and Bristol Place where we will walk the paths in the neighborhood. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths.
— Winter Conditioning Program begins at Well Being Fitness. 9 a.m. Winter sports and activities are on the horizon! Join Well Being (Massage and Functional Fitness) and prepare your body for success. Its Winter Conditioning Program starts on October 29. Two separate 3 week programs are offered w/a one week break (Thanksgiving) between the two. — WNC to hold 'Moment of Peace' on Tuesday at Carson City campus. Noon. Western Nevada College’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will hold a vigil on Tuesday at noon at the flagpole in front of the Bristlecone Building at the Carson City campus. The committee will hold a Moment of Peace to recognize the lives that were taken last week in a Kroger grocery store shooting in Jeffersontown, Ky., and at the hate crime massacre at Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The victims’ names will be read, followed by a short period for people to reflect on encouraging an environment of peace. Community members are invited to join WNC students, faculty and staff in honoring the victims' lives and promoting future peace.
— The Carson City Community Center is hosting a BOO-nanza on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space and the Carson City Library are teaming up to host a safe and fun BOO-nanza with trick-or-treating, haunted house, crafts, games, costume contest, food trucks and much more. This event is free but please bring a non-perishable food item as part of a food drive. Dozens of local business and organizations will decorate booths and pass out candy and other treats. The event runs from 4 to 7 p.m.
— Tuesday Evening Conditioning Hike to Deadman's Creek Trail hosted by Muscle Powered. 5:30 p.m. Come out and Muscle Powered again Tuesday for free early evening hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at SaveMart on N. Carson street along the south end of the building to carpool to the trailhead on East Lake Blvd, Washoe Valley. Bring a flashlight. Water and sturdy boots or athletic shoes required. Hikes are 4-6 miles in length with an elevation gain, sometimes over 500 feet and usually on single track trail. — Town Hall Tuesdays with Nevada Senate District Candidate Tina Davis-Hersey. 6 p.m. Discuss issues on the November ballot. The discussion is fro 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 700 West Telegraph Street, Carson City. — Carson Creepy Short Horror Film Competition screening this Tuesday at BAC. 6:30 p.m. Come see the results of all the hard work our local filmmakers put into making their short horror films at the Carson Creepy Short Horror Film Competition screening on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 6:30 p.m. in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., in Carson City. Awards will follow. And the audience gets to vote on Audience Choice for Best Film. An extra treat, for you trick or treaters on the day BEFORE Halloween, is the screening of 7 more short films! Two from City Wide Competition, 4 from Indie Film America young filmmakers and one more as an extra! Admission is only $5 and wear a costume if you like! There will be treats! Films made between Oct 17 and 24 are shown Oct 30.
ONGOING:
— The Nevada Artists Association (NAA) presents the annual Nevada Day Art Show, now through Nov. 30. Entries in all categories are judged with cash prizes awarded to winners. The NAA Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
— Give a Dog a Bone Pet Food Drive. All Day. Michael Hohl Motor Company is proud to launch their 5th Annual "Give A Dog A Bone" pet food drive to fill a pickup for the nonprofit organization Pets of the Homeless. They provide pet food and basic emergency veterinary care to the homeless pets in local communities across the United States including Carson City. Last year’s drive collected almost 1,200 pounds of pet food and supplies valued at more than $3,000.
During the month of October bring your donations of dog and cat food to our GM showroom at 3700 S. Carson St. Carson City and help fill the truck. The donations will be delivered to FISH in North Carson City where over 230 local people are asking for pet food each month.
— Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is currently seeking individuals and pairs interested in leading interpretive programs in one of our many parks and open spaces. Interested individuals and pairs are encouraged to apply. If interested, go here.
— Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program launch Winter Coat Drive. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California Native TANF Program is hosting a winter coat drive Oct. 1 through Nov. 2, 2018. Please donate new or gently used, clean coats, hats, gloves and snow pants. Items will be distributed to families in need on Nov. 8, 2018 at 2310 South Carson St. Suite 1 Carson City or the Douglas County Washoe Tribe of NV & CA Native TANF Program office, 1248 Waterloo Ln, Gardnerville.
— Nature’s art is in full bloom at the Bristlecone Gallery for the “Nature’s Symphony of Art” children’s showcase sponsored by Arts for Children of Nevada with help from the Jackpot Grant with the Nevada Arts Council. Exhibit runs until until Nov. 9.
— The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, Americana with Cadmium Orange, by artist Gig Depio at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Depio is an artist and an advocate for public art in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was awarded the 2016 Fellowship Grant in Painting by the Nevada Arts Council (NAC). He has worked on various exhibitions and projects with the Nevada Museum of Art, Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery, and UNLV Marjorie Barrick Museum, among others. Depio graduated from Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. He lives in Las Vegas with his family. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.
— Nevada Artists Association opens Carson City Autumn art show. The Nevada Artists Association opened its annual "Autumn" exhibit will run through Oct. 19, 2018. More than 100 local and regional artists make up the non-profit NAA which operates the gallery located at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center. In addition to the Autumn Show, two association members will be featured, with art work displayed on the coveted back wall of the gallery, artist Cindy Whitaker and photographer Fred Howland will be exhibiting their finest. The Gallery is located at 449 West King Street. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Go to www.NevadaArtists.org for more information.
