Carson City Parks Foundation seeks nominations for Mills Park Wall of Honor Community Awards. The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department, periodically recognizes, through their “Community Awards” deserving individuals, organizations, and businesses for outstanding contributions made to further the combined missions of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation and the Carson City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Open Space. FCCPR seeks nominations of organizations, and businesses to be recognized in 2020. The categories for which nominations are sought are Organization of the Year, and Business of the Year. The Foundation Board is honoring the late Sandy Osheroff, former FCCPR Treasurer and Board Member as the 2020 Volunteer of the Years. Honorees will be added to the Wall of Honor located at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park. The 2020 Community Awards ceremony will be held at the wall on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at 5:30 pm as part of National Parks Month. The public is invited to send award nominations and may do so by obtaining a nomination form by clicking on the following link: 2020 FCCPR Community Awards Nomination Form. Online auction for Carson Tahoe SPCA hosted by Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery. Artsy Fartsy Gallery is hosting an online auction in which all proceeds will benefit the Carson Tahoe SPCA. Two positions open on Carson City redevelopment citizens committee. The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee. There are two open positions: One Business or Property Owner Redevelopment Area 1 and one partial term for the Citizen-at-Large position.
— Citizen-at-Large is a partial term that will expire January 2021
— Business/Property Owner Redevelopment Area 1 is for term that will expire January 2023.
The Committee’s primary purpose is to make recommendations to the Redevelopment Authority on Redevelopment Area Plans, incentive programs, special event funding, and other matters pertaining to the Redevelopment District. Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to ten hours a month is expected. All members will serve without compensation. Applicants must be Carson City registered voters. All applications submitted to this office will be considered public information. Applications will be accepted until April 2, 2020. Interviews for the volunteer position will be tentatively scheduled for the April 16, 2020 Board of Supervisors meeting.

Carson City Jazz and Beyond committee announces 2020 art contest. Mile High Band Association’s 2020 Jazz and Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for Carson City, Lake Tahoe area artists. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover. A T-shirt may also feature one of the designs submitted. The entry deadline is April 1, 2020. Participation is free. The artwork will be judged by the Jazz & Beyond committee. The winner of the competition will receive a certificate of appreciation from the Jazz & Beyond-Carson City Music Festival and a cash award of $100. Alexander Cassimus, art project chair, said, “The artist’s work will be front and center, viewed by thousands of festival patrons.” Entries must be 11”x14” and may be in any two dimensional medium (photography, digital collage and photography, watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc.). All entries must be matted, backed, and submitted in a protective sleeve. Each submission must include the entry form and a digital image of the artwork as an email attachment to info@jazzcarsoncity.com, or on a CD or thumb drive. It may also be submitted by Drop Box to info@jazzcarsoncity.com. Entry forms are available for download from the festival website, jazzcarsoncity.com. Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays - Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.

— Open studio basic painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints.

History of Nevada's Civilian Conservation Corps the topic at Carson City Democratic luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Historian and author Ken Beaton will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. He will narrate a slide show of photographs showing what happened in Nevada after newly-inaugurated President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6101 creating the Civilian Conservation Corps on April 5, 1933. This is an inspirational story of hard work, strict discipline and family loyalty that remains relevant today. A native of Lynn, Massachusetts, Ken Beaton is a retired Nevada secondary school teacher. The Nevada Appeal has published over a hundred of his commentaries, including a recent one on this topic, and many of his history articles have been published in Nevada magazine and other regional publications. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 16, at the Carson City Round Table, 3325 Retail Drive just off College Parkway. An all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch buffet is available for $7.99, 10% discount for seniors if requested. Water is free, extra charge for fountain drinks. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome. Free Kid’s Inline Hockey Clinics begin Monday at Marv Teixeira Pavilion. 5:30 p.m. The Sierra Inline Hockey League will be hosting three free inline hockey clinics for active kids Monday March 16 and 23. Session times run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., for ages 6 - 9 years old. The clinics will be held at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park, located at 1111 E. William Street in Carson City. Some equipment will be available to borrow, but please bring any equipment such as pads, skates, hockey sticks, helmets and clothing you have for your child. Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.
