What's happening around Carson City on Sunday, Feb. 24

The hills around the Nevada state capital are alive with the sound of music and nature as the Carson City Symphony performs its 200th concert Sunday at the newly renovated Bob Boldrick Theater.

Here is what's happening on your Sunday:

— Huge Rummage Sale, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carson City Seventh Day Adventist Church, 405 E. College Pkwy. Go across the parking lot to the beige building next to the playground. We have a huge selection of antiques, collectibles, books, toys, games, clothes, appliances, pictures, trinkets, sheets, blankets, pillows and more! Everything is priced to sell and must go Sunday! All proceeds benefit the Carson City SDA Church Pantry, which provides food and personal care items to local families in need.

— Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market, Sunday, Feb. 24, inside the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 1601 Old Clear Creek Road across from Costco in Carson City. Admission is $1 for adults, and kids under 18 are free. — Muscle Powered Weekly Bicycle Ride, 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Road in Carson City, in the south parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Ride will normally consist of two loops which are 10-15 miles long each. The ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but will usually be about a 12-16 mph pace. This is a "no drop" ride so no one is left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. — American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR-AED-First Aid Training, 9 a.m. at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Prepare for the unexpected with first aid training from the American Red Cross. Developed and taught by experts, this course will empower you to provide care when it's needed most. The course will include basic first aid, CPR and AED skills to give you the confidence necessary to perform life-saving procedures when they're needed most. This course is OSHA-compliant and your certification is good for two years following course completion. This course is $110. — Carson City Symphony 200th Concert: Balance and Nature with Saxophonist Rhett Bender, 3 p.m. Celebrating its 35th season, the Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will perform its 200th concert, “Balance and Nature,” on Sunday at the Carson City Community Center's newly refurbished Bob Boldrick Theater.

ONGOING:

— Chinese woodcutters exhibit debuts at Nevada State Museum in Carson City. In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000. Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge. A little-known piece of history of the two boomtowns — the role of the Chinese woodcutters who supplied firewood and charcoal to the camps — is the subject of a major new exhibit at the Nevada State Museum. “Fueling the Boom: Chinese Woodcutters in the Great Basin,” opens Friday in the museum’s South Gallery. The Nevada State Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Parking is available in the free public lot on the west side of Curry St. behind the museum.

— Artists sought: Logo contest to celebrate Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery's 40th year. Calling all Graphic Artists: Nevada Artists Association Fine Art Gallery is celebrating its 40th anniversary. NAA would like to have a shiny new graphic for its logo to use throughout the year and we need your help. We are offering a $250 award for the winning logo. We encourage you to visit the gallery located on the campus of the Brewery Art Center at 449 W. King Street in Carson City to get a feel for it. Some of the original members are still showing their art there. The graphic needs to have the ability to be reduced to 1.5” x 1.5” or 1” x 1.5” with a minimum of 600 ppi. — "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— Nevada Artists Association Winter Show winners announced, Carson City reception on Feb. 23. Daily. The winners of the 2019 Nevada Artists Association Winter Show have been announced. The public is invited to visit the gallery at the Brewery Arts Center now through March 22 see all the submitted pieces. The public is also invited to attend the Winter Show artists reception and awards presentation on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2 to 4 p.m. at the NAA Gallery, 449 W. King Street. Beverages and light appetizers will be served.

— Art exhibit 'Korea '76' featured at the Carson City Community Center's Sierra Room. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Korea ’76" with work by artists Eugene Rolfe and Gig Depio in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public now through Feb. 28, 2019. Note: the Sierra Room is closed for renovation from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6.

— Statewide presentations on radon safety. January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates 21,000 Americans die each year from radon-caused lung cancer, killing more people than secondhand smoke, drunk driving and house fires.For more information, call the Radon Hotline at 1-888-RADON10 (1-888-723-6610) or visit the Nevada Radon Education Program website at www.RadonNV.com. Cooperative Extension, the EPA and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health urge all Nevadans to test their homes for radon.
