Moving into Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, there's another chance for thunderstorms headed our way and then a bit of a cool down going into the weekend. Looking around the capital city Thursday there's a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, auditions for V&T Railway's Polar Express, art showings, a host of activities at the Carson City Library, a Muscle Powered morning hike and more.

Here's what's happening Thursday:

Muscle Powered Thursday Morning Hike at Clear Creek. 8 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City. Tuesday morning's hike is the Clear Creek Trail from Spooner Summit (partial). Meet at the Highway 50 Park and Ride where we will carpool up to the Spooner Summit trailhead. Thursday morning hikes start at 8 AM and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Hat and poles recommended If weather conditions are bad hikes will be cancelled. Check www.musclepowered.org/calendar or Facebook. Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.

Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting. 8:30 p.m. The upcoming Board of Supervisor’s meeting will be held Sept. 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, and they’ll be discussing potential purchases and contracts, appointments to the Historic Resources Commission, requests from the Carson City Airport Authority and Public Works, community planning, and more.

Nevada Artists Association Judged Photography Show and Summer Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Nevada Artists Association Presents: The 2019 Judged Photography Show and The Members' Summer Show. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Mondays through September 6. Come and see all the beautiful entries and vote for your top three People's Choice favorites in the Judged Photography Show. The Gallery also offers a wide variety of handcrafted gifts by local artists. We are located at 449 W. King Street at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Famed World War II bomber to visit Minden-Tahoe Airport for tours and flights. 9 a.m. The Commemorative Air Force B-17 Sentimental Journey will be in Douglas County at the Minden-Tahoe Airport arriving Tuesday, Sept. 3. The aircraft will be available for tours and flights, daily through Sept. 8. The B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the most recognized WII bombers flying over Europe with the 8th Air Force out of England. It was made famous in movies like "Twelve O'Clock High" and "Command Decision." Tours will be available Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This can vary depending on how many rides are given. Tours are $15 per person and $25 per families. Rides are $850 for Navigator and Bombardier seats. They are $425 for Radio compartment and Gunner seats. Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. Two sessions. 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.

Carson City Kiwanis Thursday meeting at The Martin Hotel. Noon. Carson City Kiwanis celebrates its 60-year anniversary and looks to continue to be a great service club in this great community. Kiwanis offers an opportunity for leadership and involvement in the improvement of our community. Meetings and projects develop and use leadership skills, expand business contacts and achieve a sense of accomplishment while enjoying a sincere and lasting fellowship. Carson City Kiwanis invites you to attend an upcoming meeting. LEGO Club at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop St., Carson City.

Carson City Library presents Capital Makers. 5 to 8 p.m. Capital Makers is located in the lower level of the Carson City Library. The purpose of the area is to provide open access to information and various technologies to enhance professional, personal and educational goals. It is a place to gain hands-on experience, knowledge, skills, and to make stuff! We encourage socialization, creativity and tinkering in this area. The Carson City Library was awarded a federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) state grant through Nevada by the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records (NSLAPR). With the grant funding, the library will create a community learning space at the Carson City Library. Our mission is to provide a learning space to inspire creativity, promote skill building, and provide opportunities. By providing a Makerspace with equipment, tools, partnerships and community interest, we are serving as an innovation center for our community. Makerspaces are spaces where makers (people who make things) can participate in hands on innovation, learning, and creating. The maker movement is a do-it-yourself culture where people are able to participate in activities that include engineering, electronics, robotics, 3D printing, multimedia, textile design and traditional arts and crafts. The Carson City Library is located at 900 North Roop Street.

V&T Railway holds auditions for 2019 Polar Express at Carson City Eastgate Depot. 6 p.m. V&T Railway will hold auditions for the 2019 Polar Express season on Thursday, Sept. 5 and Friday, Sept. 6 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot in Carson City. The railway is looking for actors, actresses and singers, age 13 and up to play roles from the popular movie including stewards and conductors, elves and Santa Claus. Interested applicants should bring a current theatrical resume, headshot and be prepared to sing, dance and act. Additionally, the Polar Express team is looking to contract a stage manager and sound technician for the season. More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.
