Of the many lessons to be learned from 2020, not the least of which is that there's no such thing as a non-essential person.

To insist otherwise degrades the value of human dignity. Kind of like the way Henry F. Potter made George Bailey feel on Christmas Eve one year at the end of World War II.

CARSON CITY — Today, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a proclamation naming Wednesday, November 11th as Veterans Day in honor of our Veterans that have served in our nation’s military. State offices will be closed for this official holiday.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Eric Biggart, Chair of LDS Democrats of America. The group, which is not affiliated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has as its slogan, "Same faith. Same values. Different perspective." Their mission, as laid out on their Facebook page, is to “promote the full participation of Latter-day Saints in the Democratic Party. We do this by providing educational and social resources to progressive, moderate, and conservative Democrats who are also LDS, and others who are interested in participating in a ‘no shouting’ environment.”

On Saturday, the Associated Press first reported that Patricia Ackerman led the NV-02 field in fundraising for 2020’s second quarter.

“We still have a long climb ahead of us, but the wind is at our backs.” Ackerman stated. “Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this race.”

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum will reopen to the public on Monday, July 20, thanks to a generous donation from the family of a former Stewart Indian School principal. Opened in January and closed to the public in March because of the current health crisis, the Cultural Center faced severe budget cuts.

Patricia Ackerman, Democratic candidate for Nevada Congressional District 2, last Friday stated her vehement opposition to news that President Donald Trump plans to nominate William Perry Pendley to be the Bureau of Land Management Director.

On Tuesday, Senator Harry Reid threw the weight of an early endorsement to Patricia Ackerman, candidate for Nevada’s second congressional district.

Carson City, NV (May 4, 2020) - In a selfie video released yesterday, Chris Giunchigliani formally endorsed Patricia Ackerman for Nevada Congressional District 2. “Chris G.”, as she is known in Nevada Democratic circles, has been active in Nevada politics since she was elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1991. In 2006, Giunchigliani was elected to the Clark County Commission. She was also president at different points of the Clark County Education Association and Nevada State Education Association.

Patricia Ackerman finished the first quarter of 2020 with the most money raised, as well as the most cash on hand, of any Democratic candidate in the race for Nevada Congressional District 2.

The Carson City Republican Women's Club is grateful for veterans and it will honor them at its upcoming meeting Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Casino Fandango Ballroom.

We could all benefit from stories about honor and heroes right now, especially during this era when extreme partisan politics have upended our country’s equilibrium. Some way, somehow higher roads need to be taken and it needs to start with our ruling political class. Maybe these poignant stories from years past can rekindle a sense of honor that seems in short supply these days.

Have you read a banned book lately?

Chances are, even if it was on your high school literature class reading list, you have read a book that somebody somewhere wanted to ban.

Along with libraries across the country, the Carson City Library will be celebrating Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28) with a special event to thank authors whose work has been prohibited or challenged.

Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, readers will gather at the library to write letters to authors to show support for writing about controversial subjects.

On Thursday morning, a military convoy led by veterans and military enthusiasts stopped at the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City after having already driven 150 miles that morning.

Moving into Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, there's another chance for thunderstorms headed our way and then a bit of a cool down going into the weekend. Looking around the capital city Thursday there's a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, auditions for V&T Railway's Polar Express, art showings, a host of activities at the Carson City Library, a Muscle Powered morning hike and more.

Heading into midweek, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019 and there's a chance of thunderstorms around the capital city with a cool down expected for the weekend. Looking ahead there's a new writer's group meeting — all aspiring wordsmiths welcome, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center, art demonstrations and more. Enjoy the day.

Going into Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, we're looking at sunshine and temperatures in the low 90s. The Commemorative Air Force B-17 Sentimental Journey will be in Douglas County at the Minden-Tahoe Airport arriving Tuesday, Sept. 3. The aircraft will be available for tours and flights, daily through Sept. 8.

The B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the most recognized WII bombers flying over Europe with the 8th Air Force out of England. It was made famous in movies like "Twelve O'Clock High" and "Command Decision."

CARSON CITY — From barnstorming pilots of the post-World War I-era — Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart among them — to World War II Army Air Corps training to the present-day Reno National Championship Air Races, aviation has been a mainstay in Nevada.

Many folks have had enough of the anger, condescension, dishonesty, hate, bitterness, aggression, etc. that are so plentiful these days. So, despite my inclination to answer so much of it (and it needs to be answered), I write today about some reasons to be grateful for the world we inhabit -- and hopeful about the future.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events and activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. On Friday, Muscle Powered will host a morning walk at the Carson City Multi-Use Path at 8 a.m. And there's coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum.
