Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Oct. 30 through Nov. 5

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Oct. 30 to Nov. 5.

ADOBE POND, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Conditions have been shifting considerably the past few weeks.
Temperatures are cold and there is poor clarity with a little bit of snow, making fishing difficult as of late. Still, fishing has been good with lots of hook-ups from the large Rainbows still in the lake. For the best chances of some catches, it is recommended to go in the early morning and use crawlers down to forty feet.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:

Lake level continues to drop here and will concentrate fish in certain areas.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Closes on November 15.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707)
www.kenssport.com) reports:
October 27, 2013
Bridgeport is holding steady these days, there's a few fish being caught on flies, some trolling and some with bait.
The water is very low so most of the action is down closer to the dam.
Trollers have been having some success with small rapalas, needlefish and thomas bouyants.
Bait anglers have also been having some success with crawlers, power bait and mice tails.
Fly anglers are using mostly streamers like zuddlers, seal buggers, matukas and hornbergs.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:
Carson River West:
Low, clear and planter rainbows being caught near the bridges.
Closes on November 15.
Vern Manke reported: Brother in law and I only made it to West Fork, Carson River last Friday. Caught one planter (pan size) on hare's ear.  However, they did plant a lot of fish as you said.
They just weren't biting. Just giving us the single fin salute.
Big ones at Crystal Springs bridge. Looked like the US Sub fleet was there or as one guy said, "looks like a stack of firewood in there".
So many guys fishing it looked like a combat zone.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Chinook fishing in the estuary has been fair.
The Chetco estuary fishery is not just for boats, as the fishing dock located on the south jetty is one of the better places to catch chinook.
The mainstem of the Chetco is currently closed to fishing thru Nov. 1 upstream of river mile 2.2.
Chinook salmon anglers will also want to take note that a new permanent regulation is in effect closing the Chetco River upstream of Nook Creek to chinook salmon retention.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
"Over the last 3+ weeks we have been getting numerous reports of large fish dying, floating up, then washing ashore on Stampede.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) was notified multiple times and they send a warden and fish biologists to investigate the cause of the fish kill. I just heard back from CDFW on their findings. They believe a large algal bloom is occurring in the lake.
Their measurements showed that in deep water, the level of dissolved oxygen was approximately 2.6, and at the surface was around 3 (they said healthy levels are around 8).
Most of the fish noted dying were mackinaw and kokanee, and they were dying in the deeper parts of the lake near the dam and dike. Apparently the fish closer to the inlets where the river and streams are flowing in are doing a bit better.
They said that they expect fish to keep dying in the lake until significant new water flows into the lake and increases the oxygen levels, although the colder temperatures we are getting will also help with oxygen levels. We should expect to get more reports about additional fish dying, but it should be at a somewhat smaller scale than we have been seeing according to CDFW.
There was no indication of toxins contributing to the fish kill. There were also no indications that the lake was turning over, but that could still be a possibility."  Per David Lass-Trout Unlimited via Kris Boatner-District Wildlife Biologist/Natural Resources Officer.

LAKE TAHOE:
A report of average sized Mackinaw trout caught while trolling with flasher blades and minnows near Homewood on the west side of the lake.

TOPAZ LAKE:

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been good but some fishermen report difficulty catching steelhead. The rains in the past brought in lots of new fish, but as time goes on less and less have been coming in. Still, the conditions are great with low and clear water, and the steelheads are spread out so make sure to cover lots of ground.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

TRUCKEE RIVER, BIG:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
California:
Snow and a taste of old man winter has arrived and will be with us for a few days! As temps come up later in the week and some of the precip starts to melt expect water temps to dip into the upper 40's.
Flows above the Boca outflow are down to winter level and flows below this slightly higher as they are dumping about 200 CFS out of Boca.
Nevada:
Caution!  If you do fish the Truckee in Nevada please be aware that New Zealand Mudsnails have been found in sections of water there so please clean your shoes and gear accordingly to avoid aquatic hitch hikers!

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
John and Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort (760-647-6484) ( HYPERLINK "mailto:vir@qnet.com" vir@qnet.com) report:
Hi Ya'll, here's my FINAL report unless something comes up.........like a huge brown out of Big Virginia....
October 27, 2013
This will be my FINAL report for the 2013, unless something happens like DFW calling telling us they are planting brooders.
Big Virginia is producing and Little is on the slow side due to the numerous anglers fishing the lake. Three guys actually carried a small boat down yesterday and were sitting over the hole but I couldn't see how they were doing and I was there for 45 minutes.

NOTE:  When DFW no longer stocks anglers should use discretion in keeping fish and understand that keeping constitutes less fish and any that are natives will not be able to spawn in 2014.  Protecting the resource is very important and I'm assuming all anglers are interested in doing this.
Temperature in the morning has been in the low 30's but it warms up nicely during the day around 58-62 degrees, just clear, cool crisp air.
It's starting to get fairly breezy (11am) so if this storm is coming in, it should really kick in with heavy wind.
Aspens have blown off all along the Virginia Lakes Road.
The Dunderberg Meadow road very little color but mostly blown off, so drive down to Sinnamon Meadows and look back toward the mountain you might find some color on the north slope.
Also, some great color along US395 in the protected areas and up Lundy canyon. This will only be around for a few more days.
Go on-line and see all the colors that have been listed with Mono County.
DFW did not plant and Alpers are still in the lake.
I'm fishing the "window" daily (with John) and it's been good, but the back country is much more fun even though the trout are smaller.
I hate to admit it, but his count is more than mine, but he has my rock and can cast farther, oh and I forgot to bring my attack-master.

Backcountry: Has been slow unless you know what you are doing.  It warmed up again so some dries will work during the "window" with a fly/bubble or a fly rod but nothing big. Three small storms so far this month with another to arrive this evening which should produce a good amount of snow at higher elevations.
Bait for the week:
Nightcrawlers and salmon eggs were consistent most of the week, but then power worms, rainbow glitter power bait and hoppers did well during the mid-day sun.
Lures:
Working are gold Kastmasters, orange silver Kastmasters, and Gold-red Thomas Buoyant, or any small gold spoon.

Fly: Action was on Burgundy, olive and black Woolly buggers, Hornbergs, olive leeches and Matukas.  My choice would be a bead head yellow or orange soft hackle as the spider trails are really going off.
Big fish for the week:
Kathy Wilson of Castroville 5lb5 Alper on worms Oct 13 in Big Virginia.
See you next spring:
and have a wonderful winter and pray for snow!

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
East Walker River:
October 27, 2013
The East is running at 27 CFS still but is fishing pretty good.
Streamers and small midge patterns have been the best with a few good reports on dries coming in now and then.
The Nevada side is also fishing really well with some reports of 30 fish days down there!
Patterns to try include wd-40's, dark lord, prince, zebra midge, rainbow warrior, flashback emerger, zuddler, zonker, sculpzilla, moal leech, blue wing olive, parachute adams.
Sceirine Ranch:
October 27, 2013
The Sceirine is fishing excellent still, lots of good action in the deeper water down there right now. Most of the same flies that are working on the Cali side will work down there as well.
Give us a call if you want to book some private water!
Hunewill Pond:
October 27, 2013
The pond fished good for some this week and not as well for others, the good reports we had were from anglers fishing small streamers like mini leeches and seal buggers with soft hackle droppers, most of the fish are ranging in the 15 to 18 inch range lately.
There's availability on the pond in the coming weeks so give us a call if you want to give it a go!

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
