Today brings the beginning of a 5-week mindful meditation series, a fascinating Capital City Arts Initiative Nevada Neighbors talk, a welcome to fall chamber event at Red's Old 395 Grill, a free concert featuring acclaimed folk singer Nate Currin at Sassafras and more.

— Daily through September, Muscle Powered is holding a membership drive to recruit new members. All new and renewing members in the month of September will be entered in a drawing to win a Gregory Hiking Day Pack.
Muscle Powered works to make Carson City healthier for all citizens and safer and more accessible for bicycling and walking through education and advocacy, the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian friendly infrastructure, and developing and maintaining recreational trails throughout the city. Muscle Powered is also responsible for organized weekly walks, hikes and bike rides, on and off road, throughout Carson City. Go here to learn more and sign up.
— Carson City Chamber of Commerce social at Red's Old 395 Grill, tonight 5 to 7 p.m. Join in for an evening of networking out on the patio at Red's, 1055 S. Carson St. bid a fond adieu to summer and a welcome to fall.
— Shifting Paradigms: A Capital City Arts Initiative Nevada Neighbors. 6 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative will present a talk by artists and writers Andreana Donahue and Tim Ortiz. Their illustrated talk, "Shifting Paradigms" is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union, 302 N Carson St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception, no-host for Donahue and Ortiz preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited. In their Nevada Neighbors presentation, Tim Ortiz and Andreana Donahue will discuss specific works from the CCAI exhibitions, Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth in the Courthouse Gallery, and Jenny Raven in the Sierra Room.
— Carson City Leisure Hour Club celebrates 123 years of history. Club member and historian Kim Harris will help the Carson City Leisure Hour Club begin celebrating its 123-year history with a presentation at the Club’s first dinner meeting of the year on Wednesday, Sept. 19. This is a reminder for those who did an RSVP by the Sunday deadline. Tonight's gathering is at the Carson Nugget and begins at 6 p.m.
— Acclaimed musicians Nate Currin, Chuck Bradley featured at Sassafras in Carson City. 6:30 p.m. This free Carson City show features award winning singer, songwriter and international artist Nate Currin. With more than 600,000 miles driven and 800 shows performed over the last 12 years, Nate Currin is a troubadour in every sense of the word. With his roots in the North Georgia clay, Nate has enough of the South in his voice and writing to showcase his upbringing but he includes an emotional trustworthiness that can't be faked. He's shared the stage with plenty of "big" names and had songs featured on a myriad of television shows but Nate retains his enigmatic drive to fly under the radar from time to time. The show is Wednesday, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Sassafras Electric Food Joint, 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.
— Mindfulness and Meditation Class Series. 6:30 p.m. This 5-week class will introduce attendees to the practice of sitting, walking, and eating meditation, and teach participants how to bring mindfulness to everyday life. Core Buddhist concepts will also be explored. Some classes will include mindful movement. Between them teachers Kathy Schwerin and Angela Sullivan have almost 100 years of meditation and yoga experience. They have been teaching one thing or another since they were children and are delighted to share the practices and benefits of mindfulness and meditation. There is no charge; donations gratefully accepted.

— Carson City Art Gallery & Pottery Mid-Month Artist Reception: Roger Freeman, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 110 S. Curry St. Carson City Art Gallery’s Artist of the Month for September is Roger Freeman, a multi medium artist living and working in the Carson City area. He is currently represented by Carson City Art Gallery where he has several works displayed for sale. Light refreshments will be served. — Student Art Exhibition: The Wind Calls, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) announces it’s exhibition, The Wind Calls featuring nine University of Nevada, Reno, students’ work. The free exhibition is available to the public through October 9, 2018, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – noon and 1:00 – 4:00 pm. It is held at the BRIC, 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.
— The Wind Calls includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller. The artists used a wide variety of art media including mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and photography to make their art and comments on contemporary life and society.
— The Capital City Arts Initiative, also known as CCAI, presents its exhibition, "Jenny Raven: The Creative Growth Years 1979 - 1984" with artwork by artist Jenny Raven in the city’s Community Center Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition is available to the public through October 18, 2018. The Sierra Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents “Visual Oasis: Works from Creative Growth" at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition, with art by 17 artists, will be in the gallery Monday through Friday until Sept. 27, 2018. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Wine and Dine Watercolor Classes, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Black Bear Diner, 900 S. Carson St. Carson City. Students get a reminder text each week. Drop in basis - no monthly commitment necessary.
