Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Nov. 13

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for the week of Nov. 13. Friday, Nov. 15 is the last day to fish in most California waterways. Go here to learn more. Opening day for California fishing is the last Saturday in April.

Fishing has been fair with conditions making for a pleasant time.
Lots of report the fish hovering around 25 feet deep comprised mostly of Browns and Rainbows. The majority of fish have been feeding on smelt  and have gotten as large as six pounds (usually the Browns).

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
Don and Elaine Quilici of Carson City fished near the second dam last Sunday. They caught and releases five small rainbows while spincasting from shore with red/white striped lures.

CARSON RIVERS, NEV:

East Carson River:
The flows at Gardnerville are 45 CFS.
Fall hatches have started. Try tricos, hoppers and October caddis. The fish are holding in the rifles and underneath rocks where water is spilling over. The temps have dropped and mid day fishing should be picking up for the next couple of months.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:
Carson River East:
Closes on November 15, upstream from Hangman's Bridge.
Carson River West:
Closes on November 15.
Very low and clear.
Quite a few fishermen on Sunday at the bridges on S.R. 88 and 89.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The Chetco River opened to fall chinook last weekend. Anglers had really good success catching numerous chinook and even a few steelhead. Low flow conditions are keeping chinook in the lower river where bank anglers are faring the best.
This year anglers are encouraged to turn in chinook salmon snouts from hatchery fish that are kept. The chinook salmon snouts may contain coded wire tags that tell where they come from.
ODFW and South Coast Fishermen have placed collection sites at Social Security gravel bar and at the Port of Brookings fish cleaning station. Anglers will want to check current temporary regulations that affect the Winchuck and Chetco Rivers before heading out.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:

Dear Don,
What a great week of fishing at the lake. Everyday a few happy anglers were coming into the general store with a quality fish. Over fifteen 2.10 pounders or larger were recorded at the store this week. This included five $50 tagged fish during the Morrison Bonus Weekend.
Time is running out on our fall derby. Come join the fun by participating in the Ambush at the Lake Fishing Derby before it ends on Friday. 
Catch of the Week:
Congratulations to Bernard Galindo from La Puente, CA with a great catch from Convict Lake. Bernard was using Hatchery Pellets Power bait and was fishing at the Inlet when he landed a 4 pound and 1 ounce rainbow.
Way to go Bernard!
Other notable catches this week: 
Tommy Sanchez of Corona, CA with an excellent catch out of the lake. He landed a monster 3 pound 14 ounce rainbow using Garlic Powerbait. He was fishing at the Inlet.

Steve Alvarez of Lake Isabella, CA caught a 3 pound and 7 ounce rainbow. Steve was using Garlic Power bait while fishing along the North Shore. 
Keith Kondo of Los Angeles, CA hooked a 3 pound and 6 ounce rainbow. Keith was using a Black Woolly Bugger and was fishing at the North Shore.
Adolfo Gonzales of Anaheim, CA caught a beautiful 3 pound and 5 ounce rainbow. Adolfo was using Powe rbait while fishing at the Inlet. 
Tactics/Bait:
Another great week with a number of nice fish (2.10 pound plus) being caught. The top lure was a Thomas Buoyant and Black Woolly Buggers were fishing well. The most successful Power bait colors were green, salmon peach or any color with garlic scent.
At the Inlet a number of 3 pounders were caught.
The North and South Shores were also hot spots this week.
Other locations to try are the Outlet, Windy Point, Jetty, West Shore, Creek, Handicap Pier, and Hangman's Tree.  
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
Tasmanian Devil, Green or brown Marvel Fly Lures, Trout Teasers, Panther Martin, Needlefish, Rooster Tails, and Bite-on Fury Shad on Power bait.

Wee Dick Nite Copper Red Head, Metallic Perch, Yellow Watermelon are all reported doing well, with the Dick Nite doing the best.
Fly:  Black, Rust and Orange are the colors that seem to be doing well in Wiggle Tail and Wooly Buggers.

DONNER LAKE, CALIF:

This lake received a stocking of trout recently and it will continue to be the place to fish in our area now!

Fishing remains good following the fall trout plants. Anglers are catching mostly rainbows in the 10- to 12-inch range with a few browns thrown in.
A variety of traditional trout baits are catching the fish.
Fly fishermen are doing really well using Woolly Buggers in olive or brown colors. Largemouth bass are still taking rubber worms in orange–brown or dark purple.
The lower campground is open.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:

Anglers are finding good fishing for stocked rainbows and making the best of low fishing pressure.
The fish are taking flies, Power Bait and nightcrawlers.

Only a short amount of time is left to fish these waters for the 2013 season.
A fair amount of caddis, PMD, and baetis hatches are still going strong so the fishing can be great! The water themselves are relatively uncrowded , so keep that in mind if you want some peace and quiet when you’re throwing an #18 Black Zebra midge or #16 Brown Micro mayfly.

Similar to last week, lots of salmon right now, with weight ranging anywhere between 15 and 40 pounds.
Local fishermen have reported successful catches using Quikfish, Sacramento Spinners, and jigs.
Low water level so be wary of water hazards when boating.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
The fishing at Frenchman Lake continues to be good.
5 rainbows were caught at Lunker Point toward the narrows in the early afternoon this past week using nightcrawlers.
The fish weighed between 1 ½ and 2 pounds each.
This past weekend, Karen and Wayne from Reno, NV limited out while fly fishing at the north end of the lake using Copper Johns and Blood Worm flies. Their fish averaged between 18 and 19 inches each.
Shawn and Aaron, also from Reno, NV caught 3 rainbows, 16 to 18 inches each, with chartreuse power bait fishing at the dam on Sunday, 11/10/13.
We also received several reports of good fishing at Turkey Point.

Still no changes from last week, as consistent catches are still being reported happening anywhere between the early AM and late afternoon hours.
There are many reports indicating the fish eating emerging caddis near the flats above the HWY 299 bridge.
Black leech patterns have been doing very well, but Goddard Caddis and Orange Stimulators have also been doing well.

Colorado River:
Catfish roaming the Community Park or Sunshine Peninsula areas are still taking anchovies and various baits.
One lucky angler reeled in an 11.48-pound fish.
Anchovies and pencil poppers have been enticing stripers. Most are holding in the current.
The Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery is scheduled to plant trout next week, but anglers using night crawlers are still reportedly bringing in fish topping four pounds.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:

Almost no one has been boating right now, making the lake nice and serene with lots of fish cruising along the edges and among the weeds. Make sure to use leech patterns retrieved on Type III sink tips for the best possible chances of a hook-up.

This is a great place for someone who wants to learn how to flyfish or for kids who just want to catch some fish on lures.
Nice browns and cutthrouts being caught but not for those who are looking for large trout. 
This lake will be closed for the season after Friday November 15th!

MASON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANGEMENT AREA, NEV:

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:

For the past week it seems fishing has been for the birds… and that is how many anglers have been locating their fishing holes.
The birds are honing in on schools of gizzard and threadfin that have moved into the coves, shallows and throughout Vegas Wash.
These schools attract the striped bass as well, so take a look up while on the water and let the birds guide you to a promising fishing spot.
Anglers have had success jigging spoons off the bottom or speed reeling spoons toward the surface.
Those fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass have had success using senko worms or dropshot rigs near grass beds with gradual shorelines.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
While the striper bite has been light, one lucky angler did reel in a 28-pound striped bass on an AC Plug.
Anglers also have caught a few stripers in the double-digit range while fishing out of Willow Beach near mile marker 52.
AC Plugs and other trout imitations are taking the fish, anchovies have also been a popular bait choice as well.
The water level at the lake has dropped to 637 feet and anglers may have to contend with weeds while fishing.
Many largemouth and smallmouth bass have been found near edges and drop-offs in about 25 feet of water or close to fish habitat structures that have been submerged by the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Arizona Game and Fish and the National Park Service.
These can be found at multiple locations, with groups located just north of Cottonwood Cove and Katherine Landing.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
The recreational Dungeness crabbing in the ocean is closed from Oct. 16- Nov. 30. Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, lingcod, and cabezon is now open at all depths. The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two). Retention of 1 cabezon per day is still allowed. Fishing for lingcod has been very good in the Coos Bay area. The state waters recreational chinook season off the mouth of the Elk River will be open from Nov. 1 through 30, refer to open area and special regulations.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:

Bass are moving into deeper water. Find them around the 30 feet deep drop-shotting RoboWorms. Most are 13 to 16 inches.
Overall the bite is on the slow side.

Upper Owens River:
Flow up a bit to 69 CFS. Special regulations still in effect upstream of the Benton Crossing Bridge and from the monument to Crowley Lake.
The section from the bridge to the monument is closed.
Fishing is fair. Try egg patterns, San Juan worms ,Prince nymphs and copper John's.  Elk hair caddis or cdc caddis on the surface. It's important to cover lots of water as the fish are scattered.
Section from the monument to the mouth of Crowley closes Fri.  Nov. 15.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow dropped to 85 CFS. Fishing is good Try WD-40's,  pheasant tails and hares ears. Good dry fly action with para caddis and cdc caddis.


OWENS RIVER, CALIF:

Upper Owens River:
After 11-15 the UO will be closed to all anglers downstream from the Benton Bridge. 
It will remain open with restrictions above the bridge year around.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:

Good fishing in the afternoon, but be warned, the weather and the water have dropped several degrees in temperature.
For the best chance of a hook-up it is recommended to use #16-18 small dark nymphs or a black A.P. in #10-12.

Smallmouth bite is pretty good in the middle of the Lake so if you're interested in bass and trout bite has been very good at the dam! 
Lake level is very low at 38 percent capacity. 

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
A report of catching a number of "Shakers" early in the morning while trolling just south of the Pelican Point boat ramp.

RED LAKE, CALIF:
No fishermen were seen there on Sunday afternoon.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:

While still good, this week has seen lots of Salmon stop laying eggs and moving on. Expect trout for next week to fill their spots.
Some fishermen report success using a variety of Fox Poopahs, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, and Brown Micro Mayflies.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:

King Salmon fishing:
As of  November 8, 2013  water flow is currently 5,200 CFS decreasing to 4,250 CFS by Sunday.
Salmon fishing is up and down, most days getting one salmon per person, some days more fish.
We are picking up Rainbows and a few nice Steelhead too.
Rain should be on the way soon, this will be great for the salmon fishing.
Flatfish lures working best, roe later in the day, using Pautzke Red cure. 
Weather perfect. The month of October being almost a guarantee of catching salmon. We are fishing until December 16 for salmon.
Balls Ferry Area in Anderson, CA for King Salmon on the Sacramento River fishing is starting to pick up.
Salmon are headed up river and this will be the place to be in about a week.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:

Fishing near the sunset has been the best and October Caddis are still the way to go. Still, fishing in the early AM hours has been productive as well if you are using midges and dark caddis.

Fishing is still great right now, especially around Bay Bridge and Packers Bay. Rainbows are being caught on the surface in the morning but then drop down, along with the Salmon, to about 80 feet. LAKE TAHOE:
A report of average sized Mackinaw trout being caught while trolling with flasher blades and minnows near Homewood on the west side of the lake, and also just south of the Cave Rock Landing on the east side.

LAKE TAHOE:

The mackinaw fishing has been good but kokanee salmon angling is done for the year. Anglers have reported good fishing in the usual areas.
Flashers and minnows are still working, trolling from 100-200 ft deep.

TOPAZ LAKE:
Closed until January 01, 2014.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:

Reports are mixed but expect a tougher encounter than on other waters.
Expect more steelhead as the season progresses, but some Browns are still roaming about. It is still best to use October Caddis, Orange Stimulators and other egg patterns.

TRUCKEE RIVER, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Truckee River flow in Reno 360 CFS. Fishing has really picked up and the big browns are hungry.
Anglers have reported great fishing from Mayberry Park through McCarran Ranch, east of Sparks.
Anglers have reported success using crawdads, stones flies, October caddis and attractor Nymphs.
The upper sections have been good with dries and dry dropper rigs.
Concentrate efforts on the drops offs and swing baits through these areas.
Streamer patterns should also be working well through the fall.

TRUCKEE RIVER, BIG:

Flows above the Boca outflow are down to winter level and flows below this slightly higher as they are still dumping about 200 CFS out of Boca. 

TRUCKEE RIVER, LITTLE, CALIF:

Fishing here will be tough as flows will be low and temps will be in the upper 50's. Small lures and baits such as salmon eggs and garden worms will draw some fish out.

No new updates. No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lakes since 2009.
Launching is not possible right now.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The flows on the East Walker are currently less than 30 CFS.
Recent fishing has been exceptional with the colder temps.
Fly anglers have been using small midge patterns (size 22) under an indicator. Midge patters have been connecting with some big fish but it takes some finesse to land them.
Don’t underestimate a good streamer pattern this time of year. Brown trout will be chasing bait fish to build up reserves for spawning. Chuck streamers in the seams and swing the drops off for best results.
Dry dropper rigs are still worth a try. You can fool the occasional fish on Hopper patterns through the fall months.
Current brown trout study is going on and researchers are requesting information on tagged fish including color (to determine if wild or hatchery) and location where fish was caught.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow has been up and down and is currently 26 CFS. Fishing is tough. Midge patterns, baetis emergers and pheasant tails.
Early am or last hour of the day.
