Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

Good morning, Carson City. Today is Thursday, March 21, 2019. If there's something we can always count on the last 10 days of March, besides the NCAA basketball championships, is unsettled weather. We can expect showers this morning with some clearing this afternoon. Speaking of NCAA basketball, the 7th ranked Nevada Wolf Pack Men's basketball team will face 10th ranked Florida Gators today, 3:50 p.m.

The 2018 fall colors of Hope Valley

Be sure to enjoy the spectacular displays of the colorful leaves on Quaking Aspen trees, also known as "Quakies" before it's too late. Tuesday afternoon, Elaine and I took a drive to Hope Valley, Calif., to see those colors and they are spectacular!

Carson City has had many pedestrian involved crashes in recent years, with some of those resulting in tragedy. So far this year, there have been three pedestrian related fatalities in Carson City. In 2014 there was one fatality and in 2015 there was one.

This is mid-October and whether or not you are ready, be advised that winter is sneaking up on us.
As one who has lived in Carson City most of my life, I have learned through the years that one day the weather can be gorgeous and then the next day: Bam, the countryside is covered with a deep layer of snow.

And once the snow arrives, it is followed by ice and cold weather, which will normally be with us into the month of March.

Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake trout season now open

This is a reminder that Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30-35 miles north of Reno-Sparks, is now open to fishing for its super-sized Lahontan cutthroat trout that range in size and are can be 20 pounds or bigger. That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.
