Nevada 150 October Celebrations in Northern Nevada

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of October. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following area events are held Oct. 1-15:

The Renner Farm Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch, in Smith, NV is open the entire month of October from 1-9 p.m. The farm will be celebrating Nevada 150 with a Nevada shaped maze and stations depicting areas of Nevada and its great heritage. The Nevada Maize Maze at Lattin Farms in Fallon, NV was home of one of the first corn mazes in Nevada in 1998 and is open this October. Join them for an educational Nevada 150 themed corn maze with quiz trails about Nevada history. Lattin Farms is located at 1955 McLean Road. Maze hours vary. The Corley Ranch Pumpkin Patch in Gardnerville, Nevada is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 27 – Oct. 31 and includes a hay maze in celebration of Nevada’s 150 Anniversary of Statehood, pumpkin patch, pig races, a bounce house, wagon rides and other family friendly activities. The Andelin Family Farm Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze in Sparks, NV is open Sept. 27 – Nov. 1 during various times. This year’s theme is “Nevada Proud,” in celebration of Nevada’s 150th birthday. Celebrate Manufacturing in Nevada at a statewide event held in Sparks, Oct. 1-3. A reception for the Corner to Corner: Artwork Inspired by National Conservation Lands in Nevada exhibit will be held Oct. 2 in Reno. In honor of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial two of Nevada’s largest National Conservation Areas – Red Rock Canyon and Black Rock Desert/High Rock Canyon – welcomed their first groups of resident artists. This exhibition showcases artwork created by the programs’ first participants in celebration of Nevada’s treasured wilderness areas. The exhibit will be on display the entire month of October. Celebrate 150 Years of Education in Nevada this Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the historic Glendale Schoolhouse in Victorian Square in Sparks. “Mark Twain” will be joined by State and local officials to celebrate education in Nevada and commemorate the 150th Birthday of the Glendale Schoolhouse & Nevada. The Reno Celtic Celebration Oct. 4-5 in Reno will feature Pipe Bands, Clan tents, Scottish and Irish Dancers, historic reenactments, Celtic animals, vendors, Scottish athletics, British cars, kids’ games and more. Main stage entertainers include 1916, Ciana and the Clarke Brothers. Zoom on in to the seventeenth annual Lyon County Fly-In and Punkin Chucking, Oct. 4-5 at the Silver Springs Airport for a weekend of fun-filled skies in Silver Springs, NV. The Lyon County Fly-In is about antique aircraft alongside modern military and fire-fighting planes. Meet pilots, builders, and restorers of military, antique, and ultra-light aircraft. Enjoy the “Young Eagles” program where we take young people aloft for their first off-the-ground experience. New this year will be a Punkin Chucking contest. Photographer and naturalist Bob Goodman will present photos and information at Hot Springs: A Closer look at Stay Away, Oct. 4, 7 and 11. Although many folks enjoy soaking in hot springs, in Nevada, many hot springs have water at lethal temperatures. Goodman has visited and photographed many of those hot springs infrequently visited because of the water temperature or small size to offer a look at the life that forms in undisturbed areas. Classix Two Home Means Nevada Concert will be held Oct 11, 12 and 14 in Reno and feature the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the Washoe County School District 6th Grade Honor Choir, and University of Nevada piano professor, Dr. James Winn. The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
