University of Nevada, Reno Extension Master Gardeners Present: Plant a Pollinator Garden in a Weekend this February.

UNR Extension Douglas County Master Gardeners Program the 2nd Annual Seed Swap will be on Saturday, January 28, 2023, from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at the UNR Extension Douglas County Office 1325 Waterloo Ln. in Gardnerville.

UPDATE: The Wyndham Garden hotel in Carson City, connected with Max Casino and the Black Bear Diner, is now the Federal Hotel, which will be part of the Choice Hotels brand.

According to General Manager Michael Newberger, Choice Hotels rebranded the hotel at 900 South Carson Street and the name change, which went into effect on Dec. 18.

There are plans in place to renovate the 91 guest rooms and suites, as well as some of the lobby area.

The ownership has not changed, however, just the name of the hotel and the hotel brand from Wyndham to Choice Hotels.

University of Nevada, Reno Extension is now researching hemp varieties and best practices for growing it in Nevada, and offering online classes on the research findings.

I have often written about my friend Laura’s fantastic gardens. She has always had horses and chickens. Then, also having a tractor, she was able to turn and aerate large piles — all the ingredients and tools for outstanding compost.

With help from the community of Carson City, Full Circle Compost received all sorts of green waste from residents in the first year of Waste Management’s green-waste recycling program.

They wore pajamas, were wrapped in blankets, and carried cups of Dutch Bros and Starbucks as they gathered to celebrate the beginning of their senior year and the almost end of the soothing summer weather. The Class of 2020-2021, while practicing social distancing and wearing the latest fashion in face masks, gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Sept. 4 on the bleachers of the CHS football field to watch their sun rise.

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Steam train rides in Carson City and Virginia City will be available Saturday through Sunday. The Carson Canyon Railbike Tours will run four times over the next three days, bringing excitement unlike any other. Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe will open two hours early beginning at 6 a.m. to ease capacity and congestion. Combined with plenty of live music, Labor Day weekend will be a thrill! Heading into the weekend, there’s a number of activities, gatherings, virtual or not, happening around the Carson City region. Safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing.

You might have heard that Carson City is now a Bee City. But what does that mean, how did it happen, and how can you help?

What happened is that a small group of committed beekeepers decided to approach the city with the idea, and then worked tirelessly for two years with Carson City Board of Supervisors and Mayor Bob Crowell to develop an organization committed to protecting pollinator habitat within the city boundaries.

The Dayton Farmers Market opened for the 2020 season on June 11. The market will take place every Thursday this summer from 3 to 6 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50, across from Pizza Factory. Market-goers will find seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, honey, and more from our region’s farmers.

Late Spring is in full swing in the Tahoe Basin and Tahoe black bears are searching for food. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears results in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues as well as fines and possible jail time for violators.

Donna and Bill Murphy-Sharp have been “micro-farming” on their one acre property in Eastlake, Washoe Valley for many years, and became certified producers of produce in the area in 2011.

An expansion is underway at Carson City’s own The Greenhouse Project, which will provide more learning opportunities to those who are inclined toward agricultural science.


Seriously, “lasagna gardening?” Readers may remember my article on hügelkultur last year, a centuries old Eastern European method of no-dig raised beds made out of logs, branches, leaves, grass clippings, straw, cardboard, petroleum-free newspaper, manure, compost and/or other organic matter. Topped with soil and it’s ready to plant.

My friend Roni is redoing her vegetable garden and asked me if corrugated metal materials were safe for building raised beds for vegetables. Since I had no idea, I started doing some research.

My friend Julie from Incline laughingly asked me recently if she could come garden at my house since her property was buried in snow. While that’s not feasible, it got me thinking. Others may wish they too could garden during these “Stay at Home” times but not have space for an in-ground garden and need to garden indoors, on a patio or on a porch.

Gardening is a great activity that can be done at home, and University of Nevada, Reno Extension is offering online courses to teach gardening basics. This April, Extension's Grow Your Own, Nevada! Program will live stream eight classes statewide to help those who want to get on a path to more sustainable, local, healthy living by growing more of their own food.

I just read an interesting article called “How are gardeners adapting to climate change?” in the British magazine “Gardens Illustrated.” The authors interviewed head gardeners at National Trust properties across the United Kingdom. All the gardeners were seeing effects of climate change such as “floods to drier summers.”
