Fishing Report for the week of June 29

ALPINE LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports: The road is open, but there is still a LOT of snow around the lake. The lake is about 80% ice covered with some fishable water. Unfortunately, there is enough snow on the ice, you can't tell what is safe and what isn't. With this week's warm temps and some wind, next weekend may be a different story.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Sabrina Lake:
Boats in the water – check, docks afloat - check, Misty Falls (the DingleBerry creek waterfall) is arippin’ – check, the first DFG stocking of the season – check, the Lake coming up about 2 feet a day – check, the parking lot full – check, the trees are a’bloomin’ – check, the skeeters that could carry your firstborn away - check – the 2011 Season at Lake Sabrina Boat Landing has officially begun – a month or so late, but we’re not complaining – it’s here!
This week at Lake Sabrina you had to fish for the fish – some did well others not so well. Those of you liking to still fishing try using nightcrawlers, Salmon Eggs or Power Bait. Those out in a boat trolling might try flashers and a nightcrawler or a Thomas Buoyant lure and you all know the tried and true color for our Lake – Red & Gold and those of you also out in a boat that like the peace and quiet might try drifting nightcrawlers.
The Inlets are pretty much roaring with water and people, if one inlet is packed try another, please be respectful of those that are already there. There’s fish all over this Lake and you might discover a new great hole!
Had a number of nice catches this week, Zachary Jones (5 yrs) of Tempe, AZ caught his very first fish ever at Lake Sabrina using a nightcrawler.
Jerica Stroing & Ginette Vandal of 1000 Oaks and Newport Beach were ‘Feeding the Family’ using Salmon eggs.
Brad Laddusaw of Phillips Ranch landed a 2-3/4 Alpers with SalmoneEggs.
Chris & son Moses Salem of Temecula limited out using gold lures and Tony & son Tyler of Lake Forest limited out using Red/Gold Thomas Buoyants lures.
Then there was the private fishing tournament – The Table Mountain Annual Fishing Invitational – participants (neighbors, siblings, college friends) from Santa Barbara, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Corona, Riverside & San Luis Obispo met at Lake Sabrina on Saturday – the winner: David Baker – biggest overall fish. I guess another winner of the group would be Scott who proposed to Cynthia and we think she said “YES”! CONGRATULATION Scott and Cynthia!
The water is coming up fast and we’re now starting to look like Lake Sabrina and, along with the Lake coming up, so are the Sucker fish – DON’T BE FOOLED! They’re the ones with the ugly mouth.
All the campgrounds in the Bishop Creek Canyon are open. The only campground to take reservations is Four Jeffery (www.reserveamerica.com and enter Four Jeffrey) all others are first come first serve. There is a full hook-up campground also on the South Lake road, Creekside RV Park. Remember to take it easy on all the mountain roads, the deer are on the move and there’s lots of hikers out there.
The George Creek continues its powerful course down the mountain, crossing the Blue Lake trail into the Sabrina Basin. It’s one of the first creek crossings you come to and one misstep and you’ll have quite a jaunt down the mountain and into the Lake over quite a few rocks.
The water rose enough for the Department of Fish and Game to give us a load of fish and that they did on Friday – Thanks, DFG! It should become a regular happin’ thing now at the Lake!
Temps are expected to remain in the mid 70s for highs and the high 40s for lows. You can check www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.
REMEMBER A JACKET – IT TENDS TO BE BETWEEN 25 AND 30 DEGREES COOLER AT THE LAKE.
Like I said the skeeters have returned with a vengeance - remember when applying bug juice, sunscreen, SANITIZER or any other FU-FU juice, WASH YOUR HANDS! The juice you apply will taint your tackle and bait. You know it tastes yucky, the fish think it tastes yucky, too, although have you ever tasted Power Bait or Worms – to each their own.

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parcher’s Resort (760-873-4177) (sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake:
Outflows have been reduced to near minimum so the lake is really charging up. After what turned out to be a worst-case scenario as far as weather in May, delaying both the runoff and the completion of the Hillside dam project, we will finally be able to open the boat landing for rental boats (a month late - ouch!) this coming Thursday.
Depending on how fast the water continues to rise, we should be able to get fish in the water in 7 to 10 days.
Southern California Edison will be footing the bill for a huge Alpers stocking as soon as the water is high enough to get fish in at which point it should be "game on" at South. As for the bite right now...still on the slower side but definitely picking up.
Nightcrawlers or Salmon eggs at Boiler Cove, any of the seasonal inlets, or at the main inlet seems to be the ticket right now. Most of the fish being caught are holdover Rainbows but some decent Browns to 1.5 lbs and some small wild Brookies are also in the mix. It's going to be at least a few weeks before the launch ramp will be open to private boaters.

South Fork Bishop Creek:
Flows are back down at ideal levels and the DFG and Alpers stockings really got the bite going this week.
Excellent limit style fishing for pan sized rainbows with some Alpers to 3lbs 10oz mixed in is what we're seeing, especially over the weekend. Salmon eggs and nightcrawlers are the baits of choice but folks tossing spinners or mini-jigs are also doing very well.

North Lake:
The road is open and stout DFG stockings have really got the bite at North going full throttle. Thomas Bouyants, crawlers, Garlic Power Bait and salmon eggs are all fooling the rainbows. Stripping streamers on sink tip line is getting the fly guys some great counts on both Rainbows and Browns.

Weir Pond:
The bite at Weir has slowed slightly but things are still really good up there. Some fly fisherman reported as many as 25 Browns in an hour stripping dark streamers. Spin fishing guys are connecting on mostly Rainbows using all of the usual suspects. Nothing big reported out of the Weir this week but with an Alpers plant on Friday, I would imagine that will change as we get into next week.

Intake II:
As usual, lots of people are fishing the Intake now that the summer crowds are here. Despite that however, fishing has been excellent. Garlic Power Bait, Salmon Peach Power Bait and nightcrawlers have been the top producers for bait dunkers. Dark colored mini-jigs, Roostertails, Kastmasters, and Rainbow or Gold Thomas Bouyants are doing best for those who prefer artificials. We would like to remind folks that the weekly Alpers stockings at Intake II, North Lake and Bishop creek will not be able to continue through the entire season without your help. Visit http://adoptacreek.org/ for details on how you can help keep the big guns coming.

BOCA RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
Water temps in the mid 50's.
Fishing Conditions:
Fish hanging out by the marina, and down by the dam.
In about 12-15ft of water.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort.com) reports:
Well there really are BIG MACS left in Caples Lake. Justin Brown caught a 8 pound 28 inch Mackinaw trolling a silver black broken back Rapala at a depth of 15 feet off the Woods creek inlet to Caples Lake on June 26th, 2011. Caples Lake finally thawed on June 23rd and the Caples Lake marina and store finally opened on June 25th. The EID/USFS boat launch and day use area is scheduled to open by June 30th. Caples Lake will be full by July 1st and with the heavy snowpack and runoff the lake should be at a high level well into the fall-ENJOY!

CARSON RIVERS, NEV:
Main Carson River:
Very high, very fast and very muddy.
East Carson River:
Very high, very fast and very muddy.
West Carson River:
Very high, very fast and very muddy.

CARSON RIVERS, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Main Carson River:
Current flow is 1200 cfs. A great deal of snow has fallen in the Carson River region. High flow will make it difficult to wade if not impossible. Fishing has been slow.

CARSON RIVER, CALIF:
East Carson River:
Very high, very fast and very muddy. It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.
West Carson River:
Very high, very fast and very muddy. It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

CAVE LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Cave is full as are all the lakes and reservoirs in the eastern region and clarity is good. Fishing has been good for 9 to 11-inch fish using worms or Power Bait. Still not any hatches to speak of, though the fish are taking dry flies in the evening with regularity. For hard baits, small minnow imitations and spinners would be in order.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation. Pike fishing has also been poor. There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CONVICT LAKE, CALIF:
Jen Heintzelman of Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260) (www.convictlakeresort.com) reports:
Catch of the Week:
Chuck Wolford from Valley Center, California with a 3 lb. 10 oz. trout caught on Power Bait along the South Shore.
Weather:
Tuesday and Wednesday will be a bit cooler in the 60's with some wind. Otherwise highs in the 70's and sunny the rest of the time and lows in the 40's. Feel free to call us for a real-time weather report. Here is a local site that is usually quite accurate www.mammothweather.com.
Tactics/Bait:
YUM TroutKrilla, Power Bait and nightcrawlers have been the most productive baits this week. Fish have been caught all around the lake pretty equally: Jetty, Inlet, North Shore, and South Shore. Here is a list of other baits that are good to try: Rapala, Trout Teasers, Midges, Panther Martin, Thomas Bouyants, Green Woolly Bugger, White Mini Jig and Garlic Power Bait. Trolling with down riggers 3-6 colors or 20-50 feet is a depth range to try.
Stocking:
DFG stocked this week.
Mono County will be stocking prior to July 4th weekend.
Sunrise - Sunset:
Sunrise this week 5:34am - 5:36am and Sunset 8:18pm.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
Temps in the mid to upper 50's as of 6/23.
Fishing Conditions:
Fish are being caught early from about 8-11am at Sandy Point, Green Banks, and Leighton Springs half way out Alligator Point in about 12-14ft of water. Shuts down around noontime. Fish are moving day to day so keep shopping for a spot

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Jim and Jeanne of the J & J Grizzly Store (530-832-0270) (www.grizzlystore.portola-ca.com) reports:
Water temperature is in the high 60’s to low 70’s. Fly fishing: Damsels are being reported sporadically. Flies being used are Damsels, Pheasant Tail, Sheep Creek, Blood Midge Pupa, Woolly Buggers and Wiggle Tails. Best results have been on the west side of the lake from Eagle Point up to Freeman Creek. Bank Fishing: Nightcrawlers, Power Bait in Rainbow, Sherbet, Chartreuse, or Orange. Good results at Eagle Point, Catfish Cove, Coot Bay and Fairview Point. Catfish are starting to bite.
Trolling: Better fish are being caught north of the big island. Trolling Dick Nite Copper Red Heads, Sockeye Slammer Fire Tiger, Rainbow Runner in Red or Green, Needlefish in Fire Tiger, Metallic Perch, or Red Dot Frog. Sunday the bigger fish were at 20 to 25 feet, in the main channel from about Mallard Cove to the Lightning Tree Boat Ramp.

FEATHER RIVER, NORTH FORK, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Wiggin’s Trading Post at Chilcoot (530-993-4683) reports:
Summer is in full swing at Frenchman's. Garrett and Toby Tamagul of Reno caught eight rainbow trout across from the boat dock at Frenchman's Campground. They were using Salmon eggs (Pautske - Green Label). Fifteen to twenty inches in length and about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 pounds. Trolling has been good on the north end, east side.
Lures being used are the Tasmanian Devil, Roostertails, Needlefish, and Dick Nite. Flies being used are Mayflies, Woolly Buggers (Green and Black), Prince Nymph, Pheasant Tail and different Leeches.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Currently there is no access due to snow.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
Fair. Flows are at record highs at 260+! on 6/23.
Fishing Conditions:
Excellent! Flows are at record highs! Water is still off color, but the fish are going crazy in the afternoon! Don't let the high flows scare you away.

ILLIPAH RESERVOIR, WHITE PINE, COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Illipah is also full, but it is off color due to the heavy flows into it. Carry over has been good and anglers are connecting with 12 to 15 inch fish using the usual varieties of natural bait and Power Bait. For flyrodders, Hare's Ears, Prince Nymphs, Zug Bugs and Woolly Buggers should all work at one time or another. On the warm sunny afternoons, dries may work. A few nice browns have been showing up in the creel.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

JAKE'S CREEK (BOISE) RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Plenty of open water to fish and fishing has been fair to good, with trout averaging 11 to 13 inches for trout. The weeds are starting to grow and it won't be long before anglers will have problems with them. Like the other waters, large dark presentations on cloudy days and bright, shiny gear on sunny days with lots of movement or vibration are going to give you your best chance at fish.

KINNEY RESERVOIR, CALIF;
Still covered with a thin layer of ice. Some open water showing around the edges on Monday. When driving on S.R. 4 between Markleeville and Kinney Reservoir, keep a sharp eye out for numerous potholes in the pavement.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Water conditions:
Road to the Lakes Basin is now open. Lots of snow still around and water temps 38-40F.
Fishing conditions:
Stripping streamers working best . . . deep dark and slow.

MARKLEEVILLE CREEK CALIF:
Very high, very fast and very muddy.
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

MOSQUITO LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational ocean Chinook fishing is open. Single point, barbless hooks must be used in this fishery. The bottom fish bag limit remains at seven fish with a sub-bag limit of one Cabezon per day/angler. Anglers are reporting good catches when weather is favorable. Fishing from beaches has been fair as redtail surfperch have been biting, with occasional “surprise” catches of striped bass and Starry Flounder. Redtails will also be moving into bays to spawn.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Water Conditions:
As of 6/23 flows are at 155 CFS above the Hot Creek confluence.
Fishing Conditions:
Tough. A lot of run off below the hot creek confluence. If you fish below the monument, Western Coachmen, San Juan Worms and Egg Patterns.
Owens River Gorge:
Water conditions:
Great. Flow: 45 CFS. This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP. Water is clear and cold.
Fishing Conditions:
Excellent. Getting reports of stinging nettles. Wear pants!
Take water along as it is very hot these days.
Lower Owens River:
Water Conditions:
Flows are getting better at 355 CFS as of 6/23.
Fishing Conditions:
Good. Despite higher flows, the fish are active and fishing is generally good if you pick your spots and look for slower moving water.
Yellow Sallies are out.

PINE VALLEY COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV: The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Onion Valley Reservoir:
The road from Alta Creek (NDOT maintenance station) is still blocked by snow drifts. The road in from the Knott Creek Rd is open. Roads around the reservoir are very muddy and many vehicles got stuck over the weekend. The fishing for holdover rainbows, tiger trout, and bowcutts was very good for fish up to 18 inches with most 12-15 inches. The reservoir is completely full. Anglers using flies, spinners, spoons, and Rapalas did the best.
Blue Lakes:
The road is still covered in snow and mud. The lake is still frozen. I'll let you know when it is accessible and ice free.
Knott Creek Reservoir:
The road into Knott Creek is clear and dry.
Limited to no camping spots are available due to the high water level.
The reservoir is currently spilling.
Opening weekend was very crowded. Anglers reported catching fishing on a large variety of flies including different Nymph and Bugger patterns.
Tigers, rainbows, and bowcutts up to 22 inches were reported.

PROSSER CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV:
It is closed to cutthroat trout fishing from July 01 through September 30.

RUBY LAKE N.W.R., WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing has slowed down a bit here, with the fish that were stocked a few weeks ago scattering and being harder to find. Some larger fish are still coming in, though anglers are having to work for them. Surface water temps are pushing 60 degrees, but the bass bite is still slow, and generally doesn't pick up until mid to late July. Some nice trout have come in from some of the deeper spring heads out in the south lake. Dark soft plastics fished weedless are your best bet for bass. Woolly Buggers, Crystal Buggers, leeches and Nymphs under an indicator should all work for trout. Remember, the collection ditch is artificial lures and flies only.

SILVER CREEK, CALIF:
Very high, very fast and very muddy.

SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing at South Fork is still a bit slow for trout, but is improving. The south end is also getting fairly weedy which can be both a bother and a help. These weed beds can act like structure and so fish the edges of them like you would any other structure. The spillway is still open and the flows below South Fork as of Thursday, were pretty much unfishable. However, once the flows diminish fishing should be very good below the reservoir for quite a ways into the canyon and below with the high flows moving the fish quite a ways. Back in the reservoir, bright shiny presentations with quick retrieves are the best bet for wipers, and Chartreuse seems to be the color of choice.
Trollers have had the best luck with flashers tipped with a worm pulling in 16 to 20 inch fish and those shore anglers that have caught fish, have had good luck using Power Bait or worms fishing off of the rocky points at the northwest end of the lake catching fish averaging 16 to 18 inches. Leech patterns, Woolly Buggers, and Nymphs under an indicator should all work. Crawfish patterns should start to be effective. Damsels have started to hatch, so Damsel Nymphs should be good, especially around the weed beds. For bait anglers, worms with a marshmallow or Power Bait are working. No black bass may be kept until next Friday, July 1st. One wiper 15 inches or longer may be kept now.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

LAKE TAHOE:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbons Charters (530-544-6552) (www.blueribbonfishing.com) reports:
North Shore:
We’ve been getting easy limits of Mackinaw (Lake) Trout. We have been trolling at The Tavern Hole, Cal Neva Point, Dollar Point and Sugar Pine Point, 110-220 feet deep, with either Dodgers and minnows or Dodgers and large Trophy Stick lures.

TRUCKEE RIVER, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The Truckee current flow in Reno is 2720 cfs. Extreme high flows do not wade. Fishing will be blown out for some time. Check back in a few weeks.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
Annett's Mono Village (760- 932-7071) (www.monovillage.com) reports:
Upper Twin Lake:
Michael Lapaelia from Wesperia used a nightcrawler for two nice rainbows for a total weight of 3.25 pounds.
All creeks and streams flooding the lake with plenty of food. Fish and Game planting weekly. We will be putting in some of our private pond trout before the start of our July 01 thru July 10 fishing derby. Power Bait working well for stringers of pan-sized rainbows.

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No fish have been reported or seen at Walker Lake so far this fishing season. Mineral County Road Dept. has done some work on the State Parks Launch. Launching is improved but you still need four wheel drive.

WALKER RIVERS, NEV:
(East Walker River – West Walker River):
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
East Walker River:
East Walker Flow is at 230 CFS. Wading becomes difficult after 200 CFS and the fish tend to spread out along the banks. Try yellow stones and Prince Nymphs, drift your dropper set close to the outside bends and the tail outs.
No reports on the lower section.

WALKER RIVERS, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
East Walker River:
Water Conditions:
Flows raging 915 CFS as of 6/23.
Fishing Conditions:
Tough. Yellow Sallies have shown up.

WASHOE LAKE, WAHOE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Washoe Lake dried up in 2004 and, although it is presently full and has been restocked, the fish population, consisting mostly of channel catfish and white bass, is small. Fishing is expected to be poor.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing continues to be good for both boaters and shore anglers at Wildhorse, though boaters are doing a bit better than shore anglers with the better fishing appearing to be at the south part of the lake below the State Park boat ramp. Surface water temperatures have climbed into the mid 60's. Most shore anglers are using Power Bait, though a few are using hardware or worms. Green, white or orange Power Bait seem to be the colors that have been the most popular with both the anglers and the fish. Water clarity continues to be good though algae is starting to appear.
There was report of a 6 lb. wiper being caught last weekend. Trollers fishing for trout are using small sets of flashers or cowbells with a trailing spinner, crankbait or tipped with a worm. The bright flash seems to be the key. Shore anglers are also using small spinners such as Panther Martins with a gold or silver blade as well as natural baits.
Fishing continues to be good in the river below the dam using Hare's Ears, olive bead head Crystal Buggers, and brown Woolly Buggers for flies and Panther Martin's and other small spinners for spin fishermen.
Flows are still high, though the east fork of the Owyhee below the dam is much more fishable than many other streams in eastern Nevada.
For bass, use soft plastics such as Senkos or finesse worms on a dropshot rig as well as crankbaits in the staging waters between spawning habitat and deeper water.
For trout, fly rodders should use large presentations like Woolly Buggers and leech patterns, while minnow imitations and spinners work well for hard baits. Bait anglers should stick to garden hackle and Power Bait. No black bass may be kept until next Friday, July 1st. One wiper 15 inches or longer may be kept.

WILSON RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Very little change here as fishing has been fair to good. The road is rutted but is still passable for a trailer.
The lake continues to spill at a high rate, but is starting to subside, though fishing below the spillway and falls continues to be difficult. Fishing is fair to good at the boat ramp and around the corner towards the dam. Water is slightly turbid, but clearing, with the dam end of the lake being the clearest. The usual worms and Power Bait are both working, though with the worms, you will want to float them off of the bottom. The same flies and hardware used at South Fork should work here. Bass fishing is fair to good, as the water here is a bit warmer than the rest of the waters. Try hitting the willows south of the boat ramp or on the far side of the lake with soft plastics rigged weedless.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK AREA, CALIF:
The Tioga Pass Highway (California S.R. 120) to Yosemite National Park (from the east side) is now open. Tioga Pass has an elevation of 9,943 feet, making it the highest automobile pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
