This time of year I always think about Cappy. In charge of Ski Incline in the early days, Cappy Cook was a hail-fellow-well-met, on and off the slopes. He played in the Rose Bowl for Stanford in '52, ran a packing outfit in Yosemite, coached our Junior National Ski Team, and his handshake would leave me crippled for days, so of course I never ventured to give him a hug.

Hello fellow anglers, Fall is definitely here. Renee and I took a trip through Alpine County last week to enjoy the fall colors. Many trees have turned, while others are just starting to get their true colors.

To get a good look at the viewing, venture up through Highway 88 from Woodfords to Caples Lake. Another good area of fall color viewing is from Woodfords on Highway 89 up to Kinney reservoir on Highway 4 .

If there’s one thing that could be considered a positive during the mandated quarantine, it’s that nature is becoming a lot happier. From the return of dolphins in Venice, to the return of wildlife in Yosemite, and a lack of air pollution all around, Earth Day this year is certain to be a memorable one.

The Carson City Library will host a community read of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club.

Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion.

This year’s program starts with National Library Week on April 19 and will run through May 16.

Noble Studios, a creative digital performance agency, is calling on all Nevada nonprofits from Las Vegas to Reno to Elko and beyond to submit an application for their community service program, Noble Deeds, by March 6, 2020. The Noble Deeds program provides more than $200,000 in pro bono digital marketing services to one or more Nevada nonprofits during the calendar year.

Contrary to popular belief, not all new residents relocating to Carson City come from that huge state just west of us. Some travel as far as 2,888 miles to create new beginnings in a community they only passed through on their way to a Yosemite.

Thick smoke from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park returned Friday to western Nevada and is affecting air quality in Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County and the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson City Health and Human Services has been receiving several calls about the impact of the smoke from the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park. The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and Carson City Health and Human Services continue to monitor air quality concerns from smoke drifting into the area from this fire.

UPDATE 2:58PM: Carson City's air quality worsened Wednesday afternoon to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" with an Air Quality Index measure now at 115.
Sensitive groups include people with lung disease such as asthma, older adults, children and teenagers, and people who are active outdoors. People who fall in this group should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.

The summer heat will settle into the Carson City region this week, with daytime temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 or higher Monday through Wednesday in the capital city and Carson Valley and 100-plus in Dayton and Virginia City, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. CARSON CITY — A bronze plaque at Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada memorializes Stephen T. Mather, the founder and first director of the National Park Service.

Steve Hale will portray the legendary mailman of the Sierra, Jon A. “Snowshoe Thompson, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, June 21, at 6:30 pm.

When Jon Thompson put on his 8-foot skis and heavy leather mail pack in 1856, he skied to Genoa and into history. His two to three day 90-mile crossings (one way) carrying the mail and valuable packages of up to 100 pounds on his back through the snow have never been physically duplicated, not even with modern equipment. This extraordinary feat has become part of the legacy and spirit of the pioneer American West.

The winter of 2016-17 continues to impact some Sierra bound travelers as highway plow crews battle several feet of deep snow over mountain passes. This is first time in a decade that State Route 108 over Sonora Pass wan unable to open in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

Caltrans crews have been working on seasonally closed mountain highways to get them open for spring and summer travelers. State Route 89 over Monitor Pass is now open as of Monday afternoon.

Snow, rocks, boulders, trees and debris are being cleared from roads through the Sierra Nevada that have been closed through winter. Caltrans crews from Districts 9 and 10 are plowing through several feet of snow in these areas. While some roads will be opening soon, many have a lot of work to be done before they can open to traffic.

The three bear cubs from Yosemite that arrived in South Lake Tahoe after their mother was killed on July 4 now have company. Two new cubs have arrived, one from Santa Maria and one from Azusa, Calif.

All five bear cubs are being housed at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care until January or February, once they are big enough to go back into the wild.

Don Baldwin will portray John Muir, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 24, at 6:30 pm. Known as "John of the Mountains", Muir was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States.
