Senator Square: Mural contest winner paints 'Road to Success'

The Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS recently sponsored a Mural Contest open to all Carson High Students. All entries were judged and the 1st place winner was Athena Favero, who received a $200 Amazon Gift Card. Second place and a $100 Amazon Gift Card went to Michael Rose. As part of the contest, Athena painted her winning design "A Senator’s Road To Success” on the hallway wall outside the GNCU branch at CHS. Students and staff are encouraged to come by and see her winning mural at Carson High School. Congratulations to our winners, and thanks to all the students who entered.
 
Father and Daughter Ball tickets available
Carson High School is hosting the first ever Father/Daughter Cinderella Ball on April 17 at 6:30 PM in the big gymnasium at Carson High School. Tickets for this event have already gone on sale and can still be purchased at the high school from 2 to 3 PM each day. If you would prefer, you can mail money to CHS, Attn: Angila Golik, 1111 North Saliman, 89701 and we will mail tickets back to you. The dance is open to all ages from Carson City and the surrounding areas. Tickets are $25 for a father and daughter and an additional $5 for each additional princess he brings. Senior, Senior Prom
Senior Citizens from our community who are age 50 and older are invited to come to the annual Senior/Senior Prom on April 16 at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Carson High School. The dance will be held in the main gym of Carson High School. Music, refreshments, snacks and fun will be provided. This event is free and there is no need to RSVP. Prom Contest Winner

CHS to represent at Allstate Festival in Vegas
The CHS Music Department will be well represented in the Allstate Festival in Las Vegas this April. The following students were selected to participate after a rigorous audition. As the name implies, they will be joining other talented musicians from across Nevada. The convention and conference will culminate with a concert on Saturday, April 18 on the UNLV campus. The following instrumental musicians were chosen. Dillon Dodge, Alto Sax – Band, Ethan Lopes, Viola-Orchestra, and Nicholas Rosen, Viola-Orchestra.

We have 15 students that were selected by live audition for All-State High School Honor Choir from the Carson HS Choral Program. Katherine Byington, Soprano II; Destanee Cachucha, Soprano II; Summer Barth, Alto I; Courtney Baxter, Alto I; Shelby Darney, Alto I; Katasha DeGraw, Alto I; Wesley Sonnemaker, Tenor I; Henry Wilson, Tenor I; Daniel Cihigoyenetche, Tenor II; Brent Lauderbaugh, Tenor II; Spencer Bean, Bass I; Tyler Torres, Bass I; Isaiah Williams, Bass I; Robert Bowman, Bass II; and Michael Irvin, Bass II.  Two of our CHS members, Mike Irvin and Tyler Torres, have earned the great honor of successfully auditioning for All-State Choir all four years!

Cheerleading Tryouts

Get ready for the 2015/2016 Cheerleading tryouts. All 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who are interested in becoming a CHS Cheerleader please attend the CHS Cheerleading Clinic and parent meeting on March 31, 2015. The cheer clinic will be from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in Senator Square and will help you get ready for tryouts. We encourage all students interested in cheerleading to attend. At 6 p.m. there will be a parent and cheerleader meeting in the library to go over tryouts and the 2015/2016 cheer season. Carson High Cheerleading Tryouts are scheduled for April 22, 23, and 24, 2015. Speech and Debate State
CHS Debate is moving through the final stage of the regular season. Twelve debaters travelled to Vegas last week to compete in the state tournament. Carson outright won or placed in the top 3 in 15 and earned perfect scores from judges in 9. Carson debaters also participated in the Rotary Speaking contest, Jonas Allred took third, Fransisco Lopez 2nd, and Sawyer Barnett won overall. Sawyer and Fransisco advance to the area level competition held in April. This week Carson competes at the district tournament held at Bishop Minogue in the hopes of qualifying to compete at the national tournament in Dallas this June.

Culinary Fundraiser
The Culinary Arts Pro Start Team is fundraising to help us get to the national invitational. Tickets are still available for our dinner/silent auction. The dinner will take place Thursday, April 2 at 5pm at Silver Oaks Golf Course. You can purchase tickets from Penny Reynolds at 283-1771 or preynolds@carson.k12.nv.us.

Scholarships and Awards
Attention Seniors: If you have been offered or have received a scholarship please fill out a Scholarship Form in the Guidance Office. We need this information for Scholarship Night and for the Awards Program for graduation.
Greater Nevada Credit Union is awarding twenty $2,000.00 scholarships to students this year, which are available to applicants who are Greater Nevada Credit union members, or the child of a member. Information and application packets are available at the Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at Carson High, or online. Competed packets are due by March 31.

Senior Spotlight
This week’s Senior Spotlight is on Nolan Shine. Nolan has a 4.3505 grade-point average and is in AP and Honors classes as well as the Emergency Medical Technician and Outdoor Ed classes. Nolan has been involved in Carson High’s Football and Wrestling teams throughout his high school career. In football, he made 1st Team All-Region as a junior and senior. Nolan has also been selected to the football 2nd Team All-State and Sierra Defensive Player of the Year.

In wrestling, he earned 2nd at State and 1st Team All-State both as a junior. Nolan also won the wrestling regionals in his junior and senior years. He is currently playing baseball for CHS and is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Nolan has been an active member of National Honor Society and has earned three Academic Letters. Through his Outdoor Education class, he placed 6th in the National Archery in the Schools Program State Competition. Nolan will be attending UNR. Although he is undecided on his major, he is interested in the fields of engineering and business management. Carson High School is proud of the contributions Nolan has made to our school and community, and we wish him the best of luck in the future.

A local couple's efforts to get the flag on C-Hill in Carson City repaired is well underway, with the president of the C-Hill Foundation working on getting the needed material.

UNR Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County are hosting a Native plant sale on Saturday, May 18 at the River Fork Ranch (The Nature Conservancy) located at 381 Genoa Ln. Minden, NV.

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.

Carson High School will host its First Annual Art Expo, showcasing the talents of its student artists in photography, graphic design, drawing, painting and ceramics Thursday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m.

A 40-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of carrying a concealed knife without a permit, a gross misdemeanor offense, and misdemeanor disturbing the peace, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Students at Fritsch Elementary School in Carson City were swinging for success with their participation in the San Francisco Giants Junior Giants initiative.
