Carson City arrests: Pair face felony charges after thefts at Kohl’s and Walmart

Two were arrested Sunday on felony charges of grand larceny after they allegedly attempted to steal more than $700 in merchandise for Kohl’s department store, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. One of the two also faces an additional felony charge after an alleged theft of more than $680 in merchandise at Walmart.

Kristofer Jacob Schutten, 21, and Ashleigh Taylor Baldwinson, 19, both of Carson City, were taken into custody at 9:13 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Carson Street, each facing a charge of grand larceny.

Over the course of the investigation, Schutten now faces a second charge of felony grand larceny, misdemeanor violation of Department of Alternative Sentencing conditions and petit larceny.

According to the arrest report, deputies spoke with a loss prevention officer who reported he observed the man and woman selecting merchandise, 26 pieces in all with a value of $754.68. Both entered the fitting room at Kohl’s and concealed the items in a baby stroller and on their person.

The pair then exited the store, passing all points of payment without attempting to pay for the merchandise. Once outside the officer approached the suspects and escorted them back into the store, the arrest report states.

The arresting deputy learned that another investigation was also underway for a separate larceny. As that investigation was underway, the two were taken into custody for suspicion of grand larceny for the alleged Kohl’s theft.

The other theft happened at Walmart. An Asset Protection Associate told deputies the store manager advised of a theft that happened Saturday where suspect Schutten had walked out of the store with merchandise.

Deputies were advised Schutten and a female walked into the store. The man had a shopping cart and the woman a baby stroller. He was observed selecting multiple items in the cell phone department of the store and then placing them in a cart, the report states.

Schutten was then observed going to the electronic section where he selected an audio sound bar. He placed the sound bar on the bottom of the shopping cart, the report states.

He then went to the computer aisle where he removed a security device from a laptop computer and then placed it in the cart. He then met up with the woman briefly. Then the man was seen going to the alcohol section, selecting bottles of alcohol and placing them in his cart, the report states.

The man is then seen attempting to leave the store in the lawn and garden section but the doors are locked. He then opened the doors to the storage room that leads to the fire exit doors. He pushed the cart with the items out of the fire exit doors, to a black Chevrolet Cobalt, where he unloaded the items and drove away. The items were valued at $681.74.

Through the course of the investigation it was learned Schutten had allegedly stolen items on Dec 8 from Walmart, loading a cart with merchandise including a 40-inch television valued at $245 and was seen walking out of the garden center without paying and left in a black Chevrolet Cobalt.

Bail for Schutten: $53,352. Bail for Baldwinson: $25,000.

In other arrests:
— A 70-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Monday morning for suspicion of attempted commercial burglary, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Richard William Mustonen was taken into custody at 2:31 a.m. in the 3500 block of North Carson Street.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the area in reference to a burglary. A guard with High Sierra Security found a man inside the doors of a bar and was attempting to enter the second set of doors to a bar.

Security advised they had several contacts with the man in the past and wished to press charges. the man was arrested for suspicion of attempted commercial burglary and taken to jail. Bail: $20,000.

— A 41-year-old transient, Zone Thomas Holt, was arrested early Monday, 1:46 a.m. in the 2900 block of Airport Road for felony suspicion of intimidating a public officers with threats, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the area regarding a man yelling. The reporting party wanted the man removed from the area so they could go back to sleep, the arrest report states.

Deputies spoke with the man who had been trespassed earlier from the homeless shelter for yelling at staff members and causing a scene.

While speaking with officers, the man raised his voice and stumbled trying to keep his balance. He pointed a cell phone and told the officers he was going to shoot them, motioning the phone like a gun and acting as if here were firing it as a gun, twice.

He told the officers that he had a gun on him and that he was going to shoot them with it, the arrest report states. He submitted to a preliminary breath test for alcohol and blew a .250. He was arrested. At jail he caused a commotion, pushing his body against an officer and cursing. Bail: $10,242.

— A 27-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested Monday, 12:45 a.m. in the area of Stewart and John streets for a misdemeanor failure to appear traffic warrant issued Nov. 14, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $410.

— A 32-year-old transient was arrested Monday, 12:55 a.m. in the area of Roop and Oregon streets for misdemeanor contempt of court and violation of a suspended sentence warrants and driving with a suspended registration. Bail: $1,277.

— A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 4:53 a.m. in the area of North Carson Street and Winnie Lane for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued Nov. 27 out of Carson City Justice Court and speeding. The man was stopped for speeding, going 35 mph in a posted 25 mph zone. A records check showed he had a confirmed warrant. Bail: $307.

— A 27-year-old Mound House woman was arrested Sunday, 1:46 p.m. in the 1600 block of East William Street for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI, gross misdemeanor child endangerment, violation of bail conditions and failure to yield to a pedestrian.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed the woman making a left turn on William Street, nearly striking a pedestrian and bicyclist.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop in which, after several attempts, the driver failed to pull to the side of the road. The driver did eventually pull over and the officer saw two small children int he backseat of the vehicle. When the officer opened the door he could smell an odor of alcohol.

The woman had slurred speech, her eyes red and watery and when she was asked to step out of the vehicle she had a loss of motor skills and nearly fell, the arrest report states.

She told the officer she had “just got a DUI” in November and had left the courthouse after checking in with the Department of Alternative Sentencing. She told the officer she began drinking right after she checked with court officials. She was arrested for suspicion of DUI, violation of bail conditions, child endangerment and failure to relied. She provided a blood sample at jail. Bail: $6,779.

— A 22-year-old Reno man was arrested Sunday, 3:58 a.m. in the 1400 block of La Loma Drive for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI causing an accident and driving on a suspended registration. According to the arrest reported deputies were dispatched to the area for an accident and made contact with the driver, who had slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person.

The man told a deputy he was on his way to a friend’s house when he stroked a parked, unoccupied vehicle. He was asked if he had been drinking. The man replied he had “two beers” in Reno, said he was not drunk and agreed to field sobriety tests.

He provided a preliminary breath test of .151 and showed signs of impairment during the field test. He was arrested. At jail he provided evidentiary tests of .146 and .129. Bail: $1,249.

– A 32-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested Sunday, 12:12 a.m. in the 300 block of North Carson Street for a misdemeanor violation of bail condition warrant issued Sept. 12, 2017 out of Carson City District Court. He was placed on a no bail hold awaiting a hearing.

— A 33-year-old Carson City woman was booked into jail Saturday, 8:17 a.m. for a misdemeanor warrant for non-sufficient funds/checks. The warrant was issued Oct. 16, 2017 out of Reno Township. Bail: $500.

— A 53-year-old South Lake Tahoe Tahoe man was booked into jail Saturday, 7:35 a.m. for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued Sept. 22, 2015 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $410.

On a sunny Saturday morning, 100 volunteer participants fanned out across Lake Tahoe’s South Shore to take water quality samples from 34 streams, creeks, ponds, and lakes to monitor the health of the Truckee River watershed and Lake Tahoe as part of the 24th annual Snapshot Day. They were joined by teams doing the same tests simultaneously in other regions of the watershed.

Just before noon on Tuesday a crash with injuries was reported on the I-580 on ramp from N. Carson Street.

According to dispatch there are two vehicles involved, one of which was towing a trailer.

Injuries have been reported and the number two lane is blocked.

Traffic cameras show vehicles are moving slowly but are able to get through to Washoe Valley.

Motorists must use caution in the area.
