Local retailers look to boost Carson City economy on Small Business Saturday
Black Friday is all about putting companies in the black, a good shot in the arm for the national economy.
But oftentimes the local economy gets overlooked during the mad rush to get the best deal at big box chain stores.
That's a chief reason why Small Business Saturday was established, putting an emphasis on locally-owned small businesses that bear the yoke of the local economy.
Today is Small Business Saturday, and many area businesses are offering their own deals for local consumers.
Carson Jewelry and Loan on N. Carson Street has slashed prices by 30-50 percent for Small Business Saturday, store management said.
Multiple art galleries in downtown Carson City are promoting the works of their featured artists during Small Business Saturday.
Some businesses are even selling goods as part of charitable fundraisers this holiday season.
Downtown Coin, at 111 W. Telegraph Street, has fine imported Portuguese olive oils and balsamic vinegar for sale through Carson City-based Carpa Nevada, LLC.
All profits from those sales will be donated to Pets of the Homeless, a Carson City-based 501(c)3 registered nonprofit with a national outreach.
Construction on N. Curry Street is all but finished and downtown visitors will have no trouble accessing businesses in Carson City's historic district.
At the Carson Mall, 1223 S. Carson Street, numerous vendors are set up in the center concourse with crafts and other goods for the holidays.
And Santa Claus is there, too, listening to the Christmas wishes of children and providing keepsake photos.
Santa's North Pole is located toward the north end of the mall. He is there this weekend through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m. for pictures and visits.
Additional dates for Santa Claus are Sunday, Dec. 2, as well as Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 8-9, Dec. 15-16 and Dec. 22-23.
On Sunday, Dec. 16, Saint Nick is reserving a special day just for four-legged kids from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Many local businesses won't close until about 6 p.m. tonight and are open the remainder of the afternoon. Consider showing your support for your neighbors, the small business owners who are the backbone of the community.
