Top line trolling seems to be the choice method on the lake this week.
Reports are coming in that fishermen are catching some nice trout.
This lake has proven to have some decent browns.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

BISHOP CREEK AREA, CALIF:
Rick and Patti Apted - Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425) (www.lakesabrinaboatlanding.com) reports:
Lake Sabrina:
Two weeks till Opener – can you believe it – almost feels like Summer up here in Bishop with temps in the low 80’s.
Looks like we’re in for a repeat of last year.
Got a good portion of snow in the last month or so and with this heat, the run-off is going to start early this year.
Rick was up at the Lake about 3 weeks ago – the back natural Lake was about a third ice-free – so not expecting any ice fishing this year at Lake Sabrina. Remember, that back Lake is still 200 feet deep, so there’s plenty of water to fish – if you take a hike or have 4-wheel drive.
As far as we know, the outflow pipes are still wide open for mandatory flows to the valley.
Lake Sabrina Boat Landing will serve Breakfast from 7:00am to 11:00am and Lunch until 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday for Opener after that it will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
And, yes, there will be homemade pie and ice cream on the weekends.
Our store hours are as follows:
           Sunday          7:00 to 5:00pm
           Monday         8:00 to 5:00pm
           Tuesday         8:00 to 5:00pm
           Wednesday     CLOSED
           Thursday       8:00 to 5:00pm
           Friday           8:00 to 5:00pm
           Saturday       7:00 to 5:00pm
Once we get up there, we’ll post more pictures and info.
Hope to see you Opening Day, April 26, 2014

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Hot Creek (4/14/14)
Very good caddis & mayfly activity occurring daily during this warm spell. The small spring caddis are like candy to these wild fish and you will enjoy the best snap during this hatch.
#18/20 hi-vis elk hair imitations will suffice, try some crystal olive caddis larva patterns for nymphs.
Dry dropper rigs using para midge or hi-vis para BWO or blue wing olive adult patterns #14-18 as an upper, while dropping a broken back zebra or tiger midge, assassin bird’s nest, or crystal olive caddis/zebra larva pattern will get you into fish in the slots between the weeds.
Lengthen your leaders to ten feet here, 5X is a good tippet size.
The deeper pools can be fished with weighted attractors like SJ worms and egg patterns hung beneath an Under-cator.
A hot rig is an olive or light Punk Perch as your upper fly with an assassin or PT as a dropper. You may also “swing cast” the Punk across the deeper slots and pools for a shot at one of the bigs that hunker along the weed lines or in the gut of the larger holes.
Use the yellow, or clear for short water nymphing.
Midge cluster, or para midge adults in the #20-24 range are hot flies for surface action.  BWO adults fished high in the suds #16/18 also good calls afternoon when the baetis start to emerge.

JACKSON MEADOWS, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
The road here is open to Jackson Meadows.  Be careful as there is still snow in patches on road in, and some have gotten into trouble trying to get here!

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Nearing the end of the steelhead run so it has been very slow this week.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

LAUGHTON, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River:
Anglers are seeing improved action for striped bass, including some large fish. One angler landed a 23-pound striper just above the Community Park area while fishing from the shore with anchovies.
The upper Big Bend area has also produced some good stripers.
Anchovies seem to be the ticket for many of the river’s fish species, including rainbow trout.
Catfish action also has been improving.
Anglers are catching the fish near the dam.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishermen are telling us you should still be able to catch a few smaller rainbows averaging 12” to 15”.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

LUNDY LAKE, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY & WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:
Closed until July 15, 2014.

MARTIS LAKE, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Largemouth bass have been the active fish of the week.
Most success has been found using various crankbaits working through about ten feet of water.
Anglers are finding fair action for striped bass with live shad or anchovies. Catfish are becoming more active and can be found in the back of coves.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers continue to find good action for largemouth and smallmouth bass.
The fish are either on beds or in search of them.
Crankbaits and a Texas rigged drop shot have worked well.
Striped bass are still elusive at times but still respond to anchovies.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational Dungeness crabbing is open in the ocean.
Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, and lingcod is now closed outside of the 30-fathom curve until the end of September.
Fishing for bottom fish has been good when the ocean has been calm enough to get out. Late winter/early spring is a great time to catch big lingcod in fairly shallow water.
The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two). Retention of cabezon is not allowed until July 1.
Salmon season (except for coho) is open in the ocean from March 15 – April 30. The ocean salmon season for the rest of the 2014 will be determined in early April.
Surf perch fishing should start to pick up this month. Anglers have good success using sand shrimp or sand worms for catching surf perch.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Black Bass fishing has been great this week. Most fishermen are catching in the 12” to 16” range, but a few bigger ones are starting to surface.
The South Fork seems to be the clearest area this week.
Courtesy of The Fish Sniffer.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Current flow is up to 170 CFS. The section downstream  of the Benton Crossing Bridge is closed for the season.
Upstream of the bridge is open all year.
Fishing is slow. Some larger lake fish showing up here and there. Some hold over stockers and a few wild fish available.
Nymph fish with WD-40, buckskin nymphs and midge pupa.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow 145 CFS. Fishing is  good  in the wild trout section with WD-40's,  pheasant tails and hares ears.
Hatches have been sporadic lately and surface action is minimal.
Some rainbows in the 18"- 20"  showing up of late.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Upper Owens River 4/14/14
It is over here until conditions change.  Flows are a total blow out at 200 CFS.  This is FOUR times the discharge that was here during most of the winter.  Let’s hope this flushing flow does not wash out all the eggs that the spring rainbows laid recently.
We has an epic winter and spring season and look forward to the summer months and some dry fly action after the levels drop.  I suspect it will not be a prolonged period of this high flow rate & should be fine by opening.
Middle Owens River 4/14/14
Stable conditions equate to good catching. Flows have dropped a tad and are holding around the 140 CFS mark.
We are enjoying perhaps the best year for super large rainbows I have seen in many moons. Numbers have also picked up this week with a mix of browns and bows.
Streamers are the way to get the large rascals, & we are having consistent results for numbers using the “dip & strip” also.
At current flows use a moderate sinking tip line.
I like a Rio 150 grain, 24 foot streamer tip.
Wading the section immediately below Pleasant Valley Dam has also been very good.  Nymphing with, or without an Under-cator has been consistent
The dry fly action has been inconsistent recently. It seems the fish & the bugs only want conditions perfect before they will show.
The midge hatch is nearly a blanket emergence on the high pressure days.
These smaller insects are a mainstay for the Sierra’s trout.
Use very small patterns like tiger and zebra midges with crystal tails #20/22 to imitate the shucks they crawl from. # 20/22 gillies, pupa, & crystal emergers work well while nymphing beneath an Under-cator.  Midge cluster patterns and parachute adults #20/22 are best for dry fly enthusiasts.
The recent warm weather has also triggered the beginning of the spring caddis emergence. On the high pressure calmer days you will see good numbers of these light bodied delta winged insects covering the water.
Hi-vis Elk hair caddis adults are good replicas #16/18. Nymph patterns like assassins birds nest, flashback pheasant tails, and ribbed hares ear patterns work great to represent the larger sub-surface profiles. #14/18 are good calls.
Mayfly adults have upright wings, twin tails, and ride high in the foam lines.
The pale morning duns (PMD’s) are good sized for mayfly adults.
Use a #16 pattern for these sulphur bodied duns. Keep them high riding in the suds or foam lines. “The foam is home, don’t roam from the foam” during a good mayfly hatch!
Streamer fishing using the “dip & strip” (see my guide tips on how to fish this method- top of any page of this site),  is also productive & will fool larger trout more often.
During low light periods , or “off hatch” cycles use the Spruce-A-Bu.
This has been my top producing fly for many years on this river fooling countless larger trout.
With the fish feeding now and warmer water temps, patterns like olive and light punk perch #12/16, Loebergs #10, crystal leeches & agent orange #12/16 are good choices.
Recent drift trips have the olive punk perch as the top producer. This fly is a “strymph” pattern.  Cross between a streamer and a nymph. Use these with a light sinking tip & swing your fly into the foam lines or main current-do not cast on top of where the fish are holding so you don’t put them down or spook them.

PAHRANAGAT WILDLIFE REFUGE, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish.
Mealworms or nightcrawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

PINE FOREST COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Onion Valley Reservoir:
Has dried up.
Blue Lakes:
Closed.
Knott Creek Reservoir:
Closed.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The warm weather is making it easier to access the river this week.
Near Lake Britton Dam area, Pit #3 seems to be the spot.
Make sure you are prepared on this river as it is very remote.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR AND THE GORGE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Pleasant Valley Reservoir/The Gorge 4/4/14
Pleasant Valley Reservoir:
The levels are really fluctuating this spring, & I am having a hard time keeping up on it as we are not guiding here much recently.
They are currently very good and the transition area is darn near perfect to fish from the shore.
Flows may be on the high side for wading the “brambles” section located downstream from the powerhouse to the lake proper.
They have over 120 CFS moving down the gorge currently.
The transition section is fishing well if you know how to strip a streamer or use a dry/dropper bead head combo.
Not a lot of huge fish, but the numbers can be great.
Tubing is best under current lake levels.
Check out the short river section just down from the powerhouse using dry dropper combos like hi-vis para BWO and stimulators as the upper-broken back tiger and zebra midges, assassin birds nest, flashback PT’s, crystal olive zebras, and copper or dark tiger midges as the nymph.
Don’t “roam from the foam” as the fish really line up on this section of water to feed on the emergers drifting down in the slower current.
Tubing has also been very productive using Loebergs, Punk Perch, Agent Orange, & crystal leeches.
Use a full or heavy sinking tip line. Still water nymphing Crowley style can also get you into big numbers along the drop-offs.
Use Broken back midges like gillies and tigers, crystal emergers, and pupa patterns are good calls as upper flies on a tandem rig.
Stick to tigers and zebras as the lower flies.
Watch out for the slippery or frozen mud along the shoreline so long as the level remains low.
The Gorge:
The Gorge has very high flows for this time of year as the LADWP is moving water down from Crowley through this section instead of the pipe that goes into the power house. Work continues to go on here. Flows are at 121 CFS with normal being 33 CFS. Tough to fish here at this release.

PROSSER RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Lake is at 38% capacity and is wide open now as the ice is gone.
Fishing outside the inlets and around the dam has produced the best results.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Valarie Taylor at Crosby Lodge at Sutcliffe (775-476-0400) (www.crosbylodge.net) reports:
Things have slowed way down over the last couple of weeks but this has been an incredible season!
Biggest fish so far this season was caught by Peter Thompson of Reno, NV.  Peter was fly fishing from shore at Rawhide.  His catch weighed in at 25 pounds, 4oz and 35 inches.
You've got to check out our new website (www.crosbylodge.net)  to see them all!
This past week we had Cathy Ripley of Sparks, NV weigh in an 18 pound 13.6 ounce 33in fishing from a boat at Pelican using a green flat fish.
We also had two 11 pounders come in.  Jeff Morris of Austin, NV was fishing from shore at Warrior using a Kastmaster and weighed in at 11 pounds 12 ounce 30 inches.  Mark Vaughan of Nipomo, CA weighed in his 11 pound 8 ounce 29 in fishing from a boat at Warrior using a flatfish.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
This year has been the comeback year for this lake as anglers are catching some large cutts.  Fishing here has been very good!  Using full sink lines or shooting heads after a running line is the way to go this time of year.  Wooley Worms, Beetles, and leech patterns.
Recently though, fish are being caught of deeper points with nymph-indicator rigs.  Color is dependent on the day so come prepared.
Best areas now are Popcorn, Blockhouse, Wino, Monument, and Diego Bay.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Rob Anderson (Cell: 775-742-1754) (pyramidlakeflyfishing.com) reports: The lake has gone through some major changes in the last week. The water temperatures have gone from 44 degrees to 50 degrees in 6 days. There is some really off colored water on both the North end and the South end of the lake due to this. It appears that the lake wants to turn over soon.
High pressure has dowsed the wind and made the fishing really tough over the last two days. It is really a good time right now to fish the first and last light until we get some more weather.
The hatchery is packed with fish and the spawn is on.
Fishing should be really good over the next month weather permitting.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
A report that shore and boat fishing have been slow due to warmer weather.

TRUCKEE RIVER, CALIF AND NEV:
Rob Anderson (Cell: 775-742-1754) (renoflyfishingoutfitters.com) reports:
Flows are starting to fluctuate due to whatever run off we are going to have. This could affect the fishing some over the next couple of weeks.
The water is perfect right now and it should not take the fish long to accept the water going up and down a bit.
Skwala Stones and Baetis continue to be the story on the Truckee, especially on the Nevada side. Nymphing is the way to go for numbers but you can get a fish or two to rise to dries right now as well.
Flows are: Town of Truckee 169 CFS, Boca Bridge 504 CFS, Farad 519 CFS, Reno 435 CFS and Vista 504 CFS.

TRUCKEE RIVER, BIG, CALIF AND NEV:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
California:
Great weather this week so get out and fish the Truckee.
Look for days before or after storm fronts to fish as these are key days that fish will feed for longer periods of time.
March Browns and Skwala Stones have been the primary patterns that have been working, dries and nymphs in these patterns.
With some of the overcast days we may see this week look for some BWO and Baetis hatches.
If you're a patient person (which I'm not) one can wait for heads to start breaking the surface or one can try to bump them on the nose repeatedly nymphing.  Lots going on right now as fish are found everywhere in the river system, so get out if you have a chance and fish.
Hatches this time of year will consist of Midges, BWO's, Baetis, Skwala Stones, and March Browns.
Nevada:
Caution!  If you do fish the Truckee in Nevada please be aware that New Zealand Mudsnails have been found in sections of water there so please clean your shoes and gear accordingly to avoid aquatic hitch hikers!
Study the water and turn rocks and see what is going on, also seine for what is in the drift.  Little things like this and slowing your approach to the river’s edge will greatly increase your chances of being successful.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, NEV:
Rob Anderson (Cell: 775-742-1754) (renoflyfishingoutfitters.com) reports:
Flows have been 40 CFS for a while now.
Skwala Stone flies are out in force and the big ugly dry fly thing is happening on the East Walker. This is the time of year that our area dry fly fishing is at its best.
Look for water just outside the main current where fish can find food and stay out of hard water. Be stealthy and take your time approaching water. There are fish hanging out in shallow water all the time on the East Walker you just have to trust it.
Enjoy the best time of year on the East Walker.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:

East Walker River (4/14/14)
Flows back down to 22 CFS.  Not good for the river-the silver lining is more water for Bridgeport Reservoir for the opening weeks. EW is having a rough couple of years & we have not been guiding here by choice.
West Walker flowing pretty good, some off colored water due to snow melt.
