Carson City Sheriff: Few incidents over Nevada Day, Halloween weekend festivities

With Halloween festivities celebrated Friday in Carson City and Nevada Day arriving Saturday, Carson City experienced very few problems associated with festivities, sheriff Ken Furlong said.

“This weekend was an enormous success in that we had very few incidents to speak of requiring intervention during the parade, during Halloween activities and during the carnival,” said Furlong. “With the number of very well organized activities, families, participants and viewers had a lot of fun without crossing the line. I’m really pleased with that.”

He noted the Friday’s Halloween activities and planned trick or treating at the Governor’s Mansion and downtown Carson City had an enormous community response. There weren’t any reports of property damage, which is sometimes associated with Halloween revelry. He also notes that while on patrol observed many of the adult celebrants using designated drivers.

“This is what you hope for: People taking care of one another. I think that led to the success Friday and into Nevada Day,” said Furlong.

The following arrests were made Friday and Saturday:
— A 52-year-old Dayton man was arrested Saturday, 11:54 a.m. in the 400 block of South Nevada Street on a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly using a taser gun on a woman, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report deputies made contact with the victim who stated the man used a “black square box” taser gun with “two silver balls” at the end of it to taser her in the left forearm. The woman told officers she was attempting to move belongings from an apartment that belonged to her ex-boyfriend when she said the man used the taser on her, the arrest report states. The arresting officer did not observe any visible injuries on the woman.

Officers spoke with the suspect, Keith B. Deforest, who appeared intoxicated. He admitted to having a taser gun when the woman arrived at the residence but denied he pointed or used the taser on the woman. He stated he didn’t know the woman, and believed the woman and a male friend who was with her were trying to break into his son’s apartment.

An officer asked the suspect why he didn’t call police. The suspect didn’t reply. The officer observed the taser gun on the table. The officer told the man he was confiscating the gun as evidence. The officer observed the gun to be black and square with 2 silver ball prongs at the end, which had been described by the alleged victim.

When the officer interviewed a witness, she stated she didn’t see anything but heard words being exchanged between the suspect and the alleged victim. She said she never heard a taser gun activate, the arrest report states.

Based on the investigation, the deputy arrested the man and advised him of his Miranda rights. He stated he understood his rights and denied that he did anything wrong. He declined to fill out a statement form regarding his side of the story. He was taken to jail with a .088 preliminary breath test. Bail: $30,000.

The man told deputies he was a firefighter and he did nothing wrong and that he didn’t have to leave. An officer told the man to leave the bar. The man then took an aggressive fighting stance and began staring at the officer. The officer asked the man was attempting the fight the officer. The man replied “yes,” the arrest report states. The man was arrested. He submitted to a preliminary breath test with a .221. Bail: $799.
