Maddie’s Fund delivers for Nevada Humane Society in Carson City
More than $300,000 has been awarded to the Nevada Humane Society (NHS) by Maddie’s Fund, a nationally known family foundation based in Pleasanton, California, to expand life-saving efforts at the brand-new Carson City Animal Shelter.
In honor of the donation, NHS has named the new Carson City Animal Services facility “Maddie’s Adoption Center,” while Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell proclaimed Tuesday that the Nevada state capital be renamed “Maddie’s City” for one day, October 4.
“The City has a great partnership with Nevada Humane Society and CASI (Carson Animal Services Initiative),” said Mayor Crowell. “I am proud of the work they, and the entire community did to make this state of the art facility a reality.”
Funding for the brand-new animal shelter was provided, in part, by the one-eighth cent sales tax increase passed by the Carson City Board of Supervisors in 2014, as well as donations from CASI, NHS, the Petco Foundation and Maddie’s Fund.
The NHS in Carson City received $383,000 from Maddie’s Fund to help equip the new animal shelter with greater life-saving measures that will assist the organization toward achieving its goal of establishing a no-kill community.
"Thanks to Maddie, more animals in Nevada will find homes with the addition of the Maddie's Adoption Center at our Carson City location,” said NHS Executive Director Kiska Icard. “Our community's homeless pets will be able to receive on-site shelter medicine care as well as benefit from innovative adoption and foster care programs.”
The donation also helps cover the costs of the shelter’s spay and neuter services for qualified low-income families, Icard said, encouraging participation in a program that’s designed to reduce the number of surrendered or stray animals.
Established in 1994, Maddie’s Fund has been endowed with more than $300 million over the past 22 years.
In that time, the foundation has awarded more than $187 million in grants toward increased community life-saving, shelter medicine education, and pet adoptions across the United States. Maddie’s Fund founders Dave and Cheryl Duffield named the foundation after their Miniature Schnauzer, Maddie, who lived with the Duffields for 10 years from 1987 to 1997.
"Nevada Humane Society has provided a shining example for not only Nevada, but also for the nation in providing sustained life-saving of a 90+ percent live release rate over 10 years," said Mary Ippoliti-Smith of Maddie's Fund Executive Leadership Team. "We are proud to help extend their life-saving programs and services to better serve the Carson City community and help bring the state of Nevada to no-kill."
The new Maddie’s Adoption Center spans more than 10,000 square feet in size, dwarfing the existing 50-year-old shelter at the corner of Butti Way and Fairview Drive, and will have exponentially more room to shelter animals in need.
Maddie’s Adoption Center, also known as the Carson City Animal Services Shelter, is located at 549 Airport Road just south of the Butti Way intersection. A formal ribbon-cutting and public grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m.
