It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Carson High School's NJROTC Drill and Color Guard team competed in their first ever ‘virtual’ drill competition hosted by University of North Carolina ROTC program. The various teams’ performances were captured on video and sent to the University for judging.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting this Thursday, 1 p.m. to discuss and take possible action regarding the appointment of a person to fill an anticipated vacancy in the office of Ward 3 Supervisor on the Board of Supervisors for a term that begins Jan. 4, 2021 and ends Jan. 1, 2023.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will get underway at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, for Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, by executive order, Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell, whose memorial is being held Thursday.

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission discussed renaming the MAC and the Community Center’s Sierra Room in honor of the late Mayor Bob Crowell during their meeting Monday.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell — who brought dignity to the office, the city and Nevada through his intelligence and kindness — died overnight at age 74. The life of Mayor Bob Crowell was honored Saturday with a motorcade and memorial ceremony in front of City Hall, where he was remembered as a Veteran, a husband, a father, and a wonderful community member, as well as Carson City’s long time mayor. Scroll and click on each photo to enlarge.

Carson City Mayor, attorney and Vietnam veteran Robert L. "Bob" Crowell died overnight. He was 74.

Robert L. "Bob" Crowell was a native Nevadan, born in the mining town of Tonopah and raised in Carson City. An attorney by profession, Bob was a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. He was elected Mayor of Carson City in 2008 and assumed his duties as Mayor on January 5, 2009. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Prior to being elected Mayor, Bob served 11 years on the Carson City School Board of Trustees.

CARSON CITY — It’s been nearly two decades since the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda sinisterly carried out the single deadliest human terrorist attack ever by crashing hijacked passenger airplanes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

For nearly 10 years the King of Carson, Carson City’s resident celebrity buck, has reigned supreme across the west side of Carson, collecting fans wherever he trod. But Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020, we are sad to report the King has died.

It was a full house at the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Thursday afternoon with every seat in the Ormsby Room filled to celebrate promotions and retirement.

As more mail-in ballots are being counted at the Carson City Clerk’s Office, some local races could become more interesting as the week continues.

Due to the nature of the 2020 Nevada voting procedure, which included a large number of mail-in ballots, these results are not final until June 16th. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by today, June 9, 2020, to be counted. The clerk's office must receive the postmarked ballots by June 16, 2020 when the results will be finalized.

UPDATE 11:40 p.m.: The Secretary of State's Office updated their election results, stating the first results should now be posted at midnight. The last update stated results were anticipated at 10 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the polls closed throughout Nevada, and as of 9 p.m. results have begun to be announced. This story will be updated as new results come in.

I don’t need to tell anyone reading this that these are difficult times, to say the least, and it will require the continued collective effort of all of us to ensure the health of our community and to safely reopen our Carson City economy. Make no mistake, your efforts are making a positive difference.

Carson City Republican Women will hear candidates running for local offices in the June primary at their upcoming meeting Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at 12 noon.

Elected Officials from the Quad Counties, Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey, came together while observing social distancing to speak with the public about their response to COVID-19.

A virtual town hall meeting was held Wednesday evening where local leaders spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic, how it affects Carson City and what city departments, schools and Carson Tahoe Hospital are doing to mitigate the issues.

Gov. Steve Sisolak made Nevada one of the first states to enter a state of partial lockdown last Tuesday as an emergency step meant to stem the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus, enforcing a closure of the state’s casinos and urging other non-essential businesses to close their doors for 30 days.

In response to Governor Sisolak’s Declaration of Emergency Directive 003, Carson City officials announced today they plan to work closely with businesses and residents in ensuring compliance with the Governor’s directive.

UPDATE: Carson City Health and Human Services clarified one item in the resolution regarding the number of cases. Carson City health officials have identified 1 positive case and the potential exposure of 14 ship passengers who have been repatriated who are being tracked.

Carson City is monitoring Covid-19 issues and working very closely with all of our health-related partners. To date, we have only one reported incident which was determined to be travel related but that is not cause to take this virus lightly.

UPDATE 4:06PM: Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) held a press conference Thursday afternoon regarding the first reported presumptive positive case of COVID-19, which is this first reported case in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

The patient is a woman in her 70s who recently traveled out of the state to San Jose and returned on March 2. She flew on an airplane into Reno-Tahoe International Airport while she was asymptomatic. The plane or airline she traveled with was not disclosed during the conference.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell delivered a proclamation Thursday honoring March for Meals. On March 22, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older.

Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.

Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell, local Hookah Lounge business owner Nathaniel Killgore and resident Aaron Sims have all thrown their hats in the ring for the position of Carson City Mayor. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell is not seeking reelection after 11 years.
