Carson City Relay for Life: 'We’re here to finish the fight against cancer'

Saturday afternoon, 17 teams gathered at Mills Park in Carson City with one goal on their minds: to help finish the fight against cancer. The Carson City Relay for Life brought the community together to raise money, awareness and to educate each other on the battle against cancer.

Carson City Sheriff's Office seeks Relay for Life walkers, runners for team

On Saturday July 11th, 2015, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” to be held at Mill’s Park from noon to midnight. Team leaders Chief Sharon Daniels and Deputy Kip Lee who are recovering cancer survivors are looking for additional walkers and runners to join their team during this most worthwhile event.

The 2015 Carson City Relay For Life is scheduled for Saturday, July 11 at Mills Park in Carson City. The event kicks off at noon with featured speakers including Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, a cancer survivor. Music for the Opening Ceremony will be by The Whiskey Heroes with the Luminary Ceremony featuring Carson City singer Molly Seals beginning at 9 p.m.

Ceremony opens Carson City Motor Officer Training Challenge, downtown festival

Motorcycle patrol riders from Nevada and California were welcomed by dignitaries Saturday for the opening of the 12th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge in downtown Carson City.

The event brings dozens of law enforcement officers to Carson City annually to compete in team riding and obstacle courses along Carson Street. Saturday's events will include 2 man tethered riding, 4 man team relay, slow ride, an obstacle course and last man standing.

Transgender panel discussion July 16 at the Brewery Arts Center

A panel discussion about transgender awareness, featuring experts who will present the facts and answer questions, will be held Thursday, July 16 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Presenters include transgender persons and healthcare professionals with specialized experience treating and supporting them. A question and answer session will follow the discussion. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

Honor Flight Nevada takes first group of Vietnam Veterans to Washington, D.C.

Honor Flight Nevada's Vietnam Project, a plan that was nearly two years in the making, boarded more than 40 veterans of the Vietnam War and support staff on an airplane early Friday morning where they will spend the weekend in Washington, D.C.

Honor Flight takes veterans of World War II and the Korean War on all-expense-paid trips to Washington, D.C. Friday's group of veterans marks the first Nevada Honor Flight with veterans from the Vietnam War. The Veterans will visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice.

Research firm ranks Carson City 12th best small city in the U.S. for law graduates

A national research firm has ranked Carson City as among the best small cities in the nation for lawyers and recent law school grads. GoodCall Data Center notes in a report published Wednesday that Nevada's capital city made the list because of high lawyer salaries, great amenities and employment options.

The #CarsonProud Campaign kicked off in high gear Saturday thanks to the cooperation of Costco General Manager Bob Tote and all his dedicated employees. Every Costco employee proudly wore their #CarsonProud t-shirts from opening until closing.

Mayor Robert Crowell and Supervisors Jim Shirk and Lori Bagwell greeted incoming customers at the Costco entrance while asking all to be #CarsonProud and explaining the campaign. Costco is the first local retailer to have embraced the #CarsonProud campaign.

Carson City Public Works Department will host a Downtown Carson Theming Workshop as part of the Carson Street redesign project, on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center.

Members of the community are encouraged to use this opportunity to share their opinions on the new theme and feeling of the Downtown Carson City corridor.

These soldiers were all children once…they stood in that first pair of shoes, released supports, leaned into the wind of unknowing, wobbled that first step toward war.” Literary work by Breeden and other Nevada writers accompany photographs of the nearly 7,000 U.S military Iraq and Afghanistan war dead since Sept.11, 2001, all part of the nationally touring arts and humanities exhibition “Always Lost: A Meditation on War.”

The Western Nevada College arts and humanities exhibition Always Lost: A Meditation on War returns to the Nevada Legislative Building ​April 6-22 ​during the 2015​ Legislative​ session.​ Always Lost will be on display in the second floor atrium​ of the Legislative Building​. A special opening ceremony is planned for Monday, April 6 from 10-10:30 a.m. in Room 1214.

Scheduled to speak at the opening are ​Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, Nevada Military and Veterans Policy Director Caleb Cage and Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Assemblyman P.K. O'Neil and others helped celebrate the official grand opening Friday of the Alatte coffee and wine bar inside of the Carson Nugget.

Carson City Schools Foundation launches with promising community support

During a news conference to launch the Carson City School District’s fundraising organization, President Ian Hill announced the foundation had already been successful in securing donations.
“Before even announcing it to the world, we’ve already raised $27,500,” he said.

Hill, a business owner and motivational speaker, addressed the crowd gathered Wednesday morning in Carson High School’s Senator Square to explain the purpose of the foundation. He told the students in the audience to review their goals for their lives.

Outgoing Carson City fire chief honored by Carson City supervisors

Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi was honored this morning by the Carson City Board of Supervisors for 31 years of service. Giomi announced his retirement in December and this week it was announced that Battalion Chief Robert S. Schreihans will replace Giomi.

“You’ve been a part of this community so many years keeping us safe. I particularly remember when we had the Waterfall Fire. It could have been tremendously damaging, and it was, but it could have been worse," said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.

Carson City delivers big time with 10th annual Holiday with a Hero

The 10th annual Holiday with a Hero was held Wednesday at Walmart in Carson City with 190 school children from kindergarten through fifth grade having a Christmas to call their own, thanks to the astounding response from Carson City donors and volunteers.

Nearly 300 volunteers were at the event to help the Carson City area school children shop at Walmart using gift cards paid for by donations from around the community. Each child was given a $100 gift card and paired with a "hero" to spend on clothing, shoes and a toy.

Carson Nugget Thanksgiving 2014: 60 years of Carson City tradition

When Carson City throws a Thanksgiving dinner, the Carson Nugget has always delivered. With 60 years now under its belt, the downtown capital city casino again outdid itself with community service, treating nearly 1,000 residents to a free Thanksgiving meal.

Teaming up with Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, guests were stuffed with turkey and all the trimmings, dished up by dozens of volunteers.
