Transgender panel discussion July 16 at the Brewery Arts Center
A panel discussion about transgender awareness, featuring experts who will present the facts and answer questions, will be held Thursday, July 16 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.
Presenters include transgender persons and healthcare professionals with specialized experience treating and supporting them. A question and answer session will follow the discussion. The event is free and the public is invited to attend. It will be held in the BAC's Performance Hall, 449 West King and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Recent headlines have increased interest and awareness in knowing more about transgender. City of Reno and Nevada State employees will soon have transgender benefits included in their healthcare plans. Many took notice when Caitlyn Jenner made her announcement and appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair.
Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell will deliver introductory comments.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to learn more about this topic,” said Mayor Crowell. “There are diverse groups of people everywhere. At the end of the day Carson City is a community, and that includes all of us.”
The discussion is co-sponsored by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Carson Region and the Reno organization, Transgender Allies Group (TAG); both are northern Nevada non-profit support groups.
PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Carson Region is a local chapter of PFLAG national. The mission of PFLAG is to promote the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy. TAG is a network of allies providing education, resources, counseling, advocacy and support of transgender individuals and families in order to ensure equality, integration, and an exceptional quality of life for all transgender people.
