Carson City Sheriff’s Office crime log: Deputies make several drug and DUI related arrests

Three from the Bay Area were arrested Saturday on child endangerment charges after a Carson City sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle go through a red light at an intersection that led to a traffic stop in which two of the three had been smoking marijuana with a 1-year-old in the car.

The driver of the vehicle, Bryan Ortiz, 22 of Richmond, Calif., was arrested for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, butane honey oil, which was found in the vehicle and that he admitted was his, according to the arrest report. He also faces misdemeanor charges of DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and running the red light.

The two others in the vehicle, a 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, both of Richmond, Calif., were each charged with gross misdemeanor suspicion of child endangerment. Their child was in the vehicle with the father admitting to smoking marijuana, according to the arrest report.

At 10:24 p.m. a deputy observed the vehicle Ortiz was driving turn southbound onto Carson from Fairview. The traffic light was red when the vehicle entered the intersection on Fairview and the light from north and south traffic on Carson Street was green when the vehicle entered the intersection.

During the traffic stop, the officer observed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and signs that the driver, Ortiz, and the male in the passenger seat, were under the influence of marijuana. The driver submitted to field sobriety tests which indicated impairment.

A canine brought to the vehicle alerted positive for drugs. Inside officer found a marijuana grinder, pipe, small bong and the top of a vapor pen with butane honey oil. The driver said the items were his and he used them to smoke marijuana at a motel. The 19-year-old male passenger gave the officer a medical marijuana card.

The driver, Ortiz, consented to an evidentiary blood draw. His bail was set at $7,367. The male and female passengers in the car also face child endangerment charges. Bail for them was $2,500 each.

— A 52-year-old Mound House man, Mitchel Charles Goodman, was arrested Saturday, 10:13 p.m. in the area of Long and Molly streets for felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, gross misdemeanor DUI second offense, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and running a stop sign.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy observed the driver go through a stop sign without stopping. The deputy pulled over the vehicle, which went up and over a curb before coming to a stop on the street.

The officer met with the driver and advised him why he was stopped the officer could smell a moderate odor of alcohol on his breath and he had red, watery eyes, according to the arrest report. The man told the officer he had a couple beers.

Due to the man’s driving pattern and admission to drinking, the officer asked him if he would voluntarily perform field sobriety tests. The man agreed and displayed impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .096 and was placed into custody.

A canine sniff of the exterior of the vehicle alerted positive for drugs. Inside the man’s backpack were three marijuana cigarettes. At jail officers found a clear plastic bag with methamphetamine in the man’s wallet. The driver had previously been convicted of DUI in August 2013. Bail: $5,824.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man, Eric Millan-Resendiz, was arrested Saturday, 1:18 p.m. in the area of Northridge and Lompa streets on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, a felony and the following misdemeanor: failure to stop at a stop sign, driving with expired registration, license suspected, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $4,488.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man, Lyden Sanders, was arrested Saturday, 3:02 p.m. in the 3300 block of Market Street on felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for sale. According to the arrest report, the man was stopped by a sheriff’s deputy crossing four lanes of traffic, not in a crosswalk, in the area of College Parkway and Retail Drive.

He admitted to the officer that he was jay walking. A deputy asked him for identification and the conducted a records check through dispatch. The officer asked the man if he was carrying anything illegal, such as weapons or drugs.

The man told the officer: “Come on. I’m just trying to get a pack of cigarettes.” The officer asked again what he had on him and the man admitted he had heroin in his pocket. Officers searched the man and located a plastic bag with approximately 15 “points” of suspected heroin, each individually wrapped and packaged. The heroin had a weight of 2 grams. Bail: $7,500.

— A 32-year-old Carson City man, Clint Malone, was arrested Saturday, 8:33 p.m. in the 3300 block of Market Street on suspicion of felony possession of a dangerous prescription drug without a prescription and the following misdemeanors: possession of drug paraphernalia and two warrants issued out of Carson City Justice Court, Alternative Sentencing.

According to the arrest report officers made a traffic stop and a canine did an exterior sniff of a vehicle, which resulted in a positive alert. During the vehicle search, deputies found a clear baggie with 19 tablets of morphine sulphate extended release, which are prescription only. The man did not have a prescription. Also located was a pipe commonly used for smoking methamphetamine. Bail: $9,637.

— A 31-year-old transient, Marisol Laguna, was arrested Saturday, 4:17 p.m. in the area of Sage and Hot Springs Road on felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor DUI drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on expired license plates.

According to the arrest report, the driver of a vehicle was stopped for expired registration. A canine did an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted positive for drugs. During the search officers located a methamphetamine pipe and a small amount of methamphetamine still in the pipe. The woman admitted the pipe belonged to her. She was asked to participate in field sobriety and she agreed. She showed signs of drug impairment. She admitted to drinking a beer, smoking methamphetamine and using marijuana earlier in the day, the arrest report states. Bail: $4,846.

— A 27-year-old transient, Matthew Isiah Scott, was arrested Sunday, 2:34 p.m. in the 3300 block of Champion Street on a felony warrant alleging grand larceny of a motor vehicle. The warrant was issued Sept. 20, 2016 out of Carson City District Court. He’s being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 24-year-old Carson City man, Mason Hoover, was arrested Saturday in the area of Russell and Long streets on felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, marijuana oil. Bail: $2,500.

— A 39-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 8:11 p.m. in the 1400 block of Rand Avenue on gross misdemeanor suspicion of false imprisonment and misdemeanor domestic battery.

According to the arrest report, the suspect and victim were involved in a verbal argument. When the victim attempted to leave the man wouldn’t allow her, putting his hands on her chest. She said she attempted to get past him when he grabbed by the backpack she was wearing and threw her to the ground. She was not injured, according to the arrest report.

The alleged crime was also witnessed by three others who provided written statements. While officers were speaking with the victim, another officer spoke with the suspect who was under the influence of alcohol. He was taken into custody. He was read his Miranda rights and denied throwing her to the ground and preventing her from leaving. Bail: $5,637.

— A 33-year-old Gardnerville woman was arrested Saturday, 12:04 p.m. in the area of Highway 50 East and Airport Road on a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $175.

— A 44-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Saturday, 6:30 p.m. on a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant. Bail: $215.

— A 59-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 7:42 p.m. in the 3500 block of Highway 50 East on a misdemeanor warrant, failure to comply, issued Aug. 26, 2016 out of Sparks Township Court. Bail: $525.
