Carson City sheriff's deputies arrest two in separate cases involving child neglect

Two people were arrested by Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies this weekend in separate cases, each on suspicion of child neglect and other charges.

In the first arrest, a 47-year-old Carson City woman was booked into jail Sunday, 12:50 a.m. after being arrested in the 1400 block of East William Street. She faces three gross misdemeanor counts of child endangerment, misdemeanor DUI and failure to maintain lanes.

According to the arrest report, deputies patrolling near Mills Park noticed a dark colored sedan traveling eastbound. The vehicle drove over the solid white fog line and continued to drive with a quarter of the vehicle over the line for approximately 600 feet.

A deputy stopped the driver who had three juveniles in the car ages 13, 14 and 15. The driver had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath and red, watery eyes and admitted to drinking a beer that evening, the arrest report states.

She submitted to and failed four field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. The woman advised she would submit to an evidentiary breath test. After the test was started she refused to blow into the tester and pretended to exhale, the report states. After two deficient samples a phlebotomist was called and an evidentiary blood sample was taken. Bail: $8,709.

— A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 10:49 a.m. in the 3600 block of Imperial Way on suspicion of child neglect, a gross misdemeanor and two misdemeanor charges, possession of drug paraphernalia and a failure to appear warrant.

According to the arrest report, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy responded to the Imperial Way address to serve a warrant. On scene officers contacted a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl at the door. Both children stated their parents were not home. The officer asked them where their parents were and the boy said he was in charge and that the kids had not seen them in two days, the arrest report states. The juveniles stated they had been alone all morning.

Officers entered the home and saw a marijuana glass pipe with green residue inside on top of the furnace next to the living room couch, the report states. The boy at one point attempted to grab the glass pipe and hand it to the officer.

The juveniles did not have access to a telephone or a person in case of an emergency and did not know how to contact their parents. The children stated they hide inside a closet when something bad happens and they wait until someone arrives. The juveniles said their parents leave early in the morning and return at 3 p.m.

While speaking with the juveniles, the grandmother arrived on scene and stated she lives nearby and usually arrives around 10 a.m. to watch the children. The deputy had the grandmother call the man so he could respond to the scene.

The man stated he leaves the house at 3 a.m. for work and gets off at 3 p.m. The man stated the glass pipe belongs to him and he usually leaves it in the living room. Dispatch confirmed the man had a warrant issued by Carson City Justice Court. He was taken into custody. He faces a charge of gross misdemeanor child neglect, the warrant charge and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $3,852.

In other arrests:

A 19-year-old man, Michael Bass, was arrested April 4, 4:51 p.m. in the 1600 block of Woodside Drive and Stanton in Carson City after allegedly giving officers false identification, a felony. A 19-year-old Carson City woman was also arrested on a misdemeanor warrant charge.

According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report, officers made a traffic stop on a vehicle regarding possible obstruction of the windows due to window tint. The officer conducted a warrant check on the two occupants in the vehicle. The woman gave officers a Nevada driver's license. Bass told officers he did not have identification on him and gave officers what turned out to be a false name and birthdate.

Carson City Sheriff's Office dispatch alerted the deputy the woman had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. Dispatch advised that the name the man presented the officer was clear and without warrants, according to the arrest report. The officer then asked dispatch to confirm identifiers on the man. The information provided did not match the man standing in front of the officer, according to the arrest report.

Bass was detained until a positive identification could be made. When handcuffs were placed on him, he then told officers his real name and stated he knows he has an outstanding arrest warrant. Both were taken to jail.

He faces the felony charge of providing a false name to officers and a misdemeanor warrant issued Jan. 7, 2014. out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $13,000. The 19-year-old woman faces a misdemeanor warrant charge, issued March 5, 2014 out of Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 58-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday, April 4, 9:03 a.m. in the 2500 block of Blossom View on a felony theft warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court April 1, 2014.

According to the arrest report, officers arrived at the residence in reference to a warrant service on Charlene Awa. Upon arrival officers contacted the woman at the foort door and placed her under arrest. Bail: $10,000.

— A 28-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 10:53 p.m. in the area of Division and Washington Streets on suspicion of a second DUI, a gross misdemeanor and a lesser charge of driving without a valid license.

According to the arrest report, a deputy responded to a traffic stop on the man because there were no license plates on the vehicle.

In addition to the vehicle not having plates, it also was driving at a high rate of speed westbound along Long Street through the intersection of Carson Street. The vehicle drove south on Division at the intersection of Division and came to a stop even though there wasn't a stop sign, the arrest report states.

The man admitted to drinking one and a half Miller High Life 32-ounce beers. He told the officer he was probably over the legal limit. The man submitted to standardized field sobriety tests which indicated impairment. He submitted to a preliminary breath test which resulted in a .158. A criminal history check showed a prior DUI conviction in 2009 and also showed the man did not have a valid driver's license, only an identification card, the arrest report states. Bail: $2,792.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
