Trains rides, Santa visits the next two weekends at the Nevada State Railroad Museum
Hear the whistle blowing this afternoon? Beginning this Saturday, Santa Claus is spending the next two weekends at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New for 2014, advance tickets are on sale to allow priority boarding on a scheduled day. The historic and picturesque V&T Railway steam locomotive No. 25 pulls Santa Train, departing Carson City’s Wabuska Depot at the corner of Fairview Drive and Carson Street.
All seats are $3 and children 2 and younger are free when riding on the lap of an adult. Tickets are available at the museum store Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and can also be purchased the day of the event.
With a strong storm headed our way Thursday and Friday, the forecast calls for some rain and snow showers early Saturday followed by sunny skies. Sunday is also expected to be a sunny day, according to the National Weather Service.
Also worth noting is the Christmas Parade on Saturday at Telegraph Square in Downtown Carson City. Everyone is invited to watch and participate, with a 10:30 parade lineup at the corner of Carson St. and W. Musser St. with the event beginning at 11 a.m. Costumes, ugly sweaters, (or nice ones, too) and Santa hats are welcomed. The event is sponsored by Carson City Downtown 20/20.
Meanwhile, back at the train station, staff and volunteers have decorated the Interpretive Center in preparation for Santa Train. Tickets are now available for Santa Train, Dec. 13-14 and Dec. 20-21. Contact the museum at (775) 687-6953
“We think this new ticketing offer will really make it easier on families to enjoy the day with Santa,” said Greg Corbin, museum director. A priority boarding line will allow customers who purchase advance tickets for the day specified to go to the front of the line for the next train.
While waiting, inside the Wabuska Depot guests can see model trains layouts from the Carson City Railroad Association. The historic Warren Engine Company will offer refreshments for sale.
Trains run continuously throughout the day in sun, rain or snow. Santa’s team encourages visitors to enjoy the exhibits, magnificently restored locomotives and rolling stock in the museum's main building before or after riding the Santa Train. Museum admission is $6 for adults, free for those 17 and younger and for members.
Santa also shops at the museum store for rail fans on his list. Stocked with railroad books, toys, clothing and many unique Nevada specialty items, the store is featuring “Waiting for the Cars,” a book of striking 3-D railroad images. It documents life and places in Nevada and California Gold Country in the 1860s as the railroads were changing the face of the West. Original stereoscope cards and new 3-D versions are shown side by side.
The museum is at 2180 S. Carson St., Carson City. For more information call (775) 687-6953 or visit the museum’s Facebook page here.
