Senator Square: Link crew helps CHS students prepare for final exams

Cookies, Cocoa and Cram: Finals are around the corner. Link crew leaders are ready to help you study for your exams. Most semester exams are worth twenty percent of your overall grade. Think you have it all figured out? Have a Link leader check your work.

Cookies and hot chocolate are available, free, while you study. This event takes place in the library every day this week from 2:15 to 3:55 p.m. Come as many days as you’d like as each day focuses on a different subject. A late bus will be available at 3:50 for students wanting to stay and study. The following schedule will be in place for freshmen to attend and receive help. Tuesday, Dec. 8, English. Wednesday, Dec. 9, Science. Thursday, Dec. 10, Math. Friday, Dec. 11, Transitions and Electives.

Choral Winter Concert
The Musical Theater Winter Concert will be at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The Choral Winter Concert will be Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Community Center on Wednesday, Dec. 9. For more information about these events, contact asonnemaker@carson.k12.nv.us. 


Band Department News
The CHS Instrumental Music Department is pleased to announce its annual Holiday Concert, titled, "Do You Hear What I Hear?"  The concert will be on Wednesday, Dec. 16th, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.  Admission is free, but donations for the food closet are requested. Speech and Debate News
Speech and debate is hosting their annual Winter Exhibition Thursday Dec. 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria. Come see a sampling of all the events Carson competes in at this entertaining and educational event. The event is free. Also junior debate student Shaylin Segura qualified to compete in the Carson City TEDx talk this coming March.

Yearbook Sale
The CHS Publication Staff that publishes the Senator News newspaper and the Carneta yearbook is offering the best Christmas present ever. Gift cards towards the purchase of a 2016 Carneta yearbook and/or personal buddy ad are available until Dec. 10. You may purchase a gift card for any amount of $10 or more. Staff member Brooke Morris has designed gift cards that will look so nice hanging on Christmas trees or in envelopes beneath the tree. This may also be the time to order your yearbook as a Christmas gift. UN Pilgrimage Contest
CHS Juniors can apply for an all-expense paid trip to New York City and the United Nations. Tour the United Nations Building, listen to behind the scenes briefings, attend a Broadway play, and visit the Empire State Building. This is open to juniors ages 16 and 17. Pick up applications in the Guidance Office. Applications are due to Guidance by Dec. 11, 2:30 p.m.

Ski Team Fundraiser
On Dec. 11, the CHS ski team will be showing the Warren Miller film “Chasing Shadows” at the Carson Community Center. The movie starts at 7 p.m. and doors open at 6:30. Student tickets are $8 and adults are $12. You can get tickets from any member of the ski team. There will also be a raffle that evening. Come support the Carson High ski team.

Graphic Design Class
During Carson City School's Bullying Prevention month, the Carson High School Graphic Design II classes created their own anti-bullying posters with many students taking their own photos for their poster. The link to several examples of student work can be found on the Carson City School District's website by clicking on the Bully Free Zone button on the homepage.

Student of the Week
This week’s student of the week is Brittany Cuevas. Brittany is a hard working student who has done a commendable job at CHS. Along with her honors and AP classes she's found time to complete the Health Science Medical Program of study and is currently enrolled in the pharmacy technician class. Thanks for all your hard work at Carson High Brittany! 

Senior Spotlight
The Senior Spotlight this week is Feiyang Ye. Feiyang is an amazing student, moving to Carson City from Shanghai, China (the largest city in China with a population of over 24 million) almost two years ago. He learned English in China which has served him well, as he has excellent grades in all of his classes, including the Advanced Placement and Honors classes he takes. Feiyang is a well-informed student and very articulate in his ideas in his classes. Additionally, he provides a different perspective to classmates on a variety of topics, especially as it relates to China.

Feiyang maintains a 3.97 weighted GPA at Carson High School and plans on attending the University of Nevada, Reno in the fall and studying Engineering with an emphasis in Aerospace. Carson High is proud of his accomplishments and we know that with Feiyang’s strong work ethic and his ability to go above and beyond what is asked from him, he is guaranteed to be a success in all of his future endeavors.

With Nevada’s primary elections approaching, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reminds community members that political signage is not allowed on state highway property.

Federal regulations and Nevada state law prohibit political and advertising signage on public highway property, including but not limited to political signs, yard sale/event signs, and realtor or business signage.

It is important to know that state road property often extends beyond the roadside, fence line, or sidewalk of interstates, freeways, highways, and urban state roads/streets.

The application deadline for Mile High Band Association’s 2024 Jazz & Beyond Festival art contest is Friday, May 31. Northern Nevada artists, including teachers and students are invited to apply, and participation is free.

Selected entries in the competition will be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover. Festival T-shirts may also feature the winning design.

The Sierra Nevada section of the Society of Women Engineers recognized several Carson City students and one teacher at the 2024 Night of STEM Star Awards in Reno, Friday, April 26.

The honorees were recognized for displaying remarkable talent and commitment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). These young scholars not only excelled academically but also engaged in innovative projects and extracurricular activities that have enhanced their learning and impacted their community.

I usually whistle past the obituaries, but Larry Young caught my eye. He was a scientist who discovered Love Potion Number Nine. Yes, Larry unearthed a chemical that heightens desire, not that the world needs it. A drug that would diminish desire might do the world more good in the long run.

Today was a very productive day working in the yard. The cold weather kept me in far too long recently. I wanted to be outside. The temperature was perfect with a bright blue sky and little wind.

A local couple's efforts to get the flag on C-Hill in Carson City repaired is well underway, with the president of the C-Hill Foundation working on getting the needed material.

As the summer sun begins to heat up, so does the excitement at Dayton Pop Warner as local athletes gear up for a two-day strength and conditioning camp.

Sunday in Carson City brought out a black bear with a shiny brown coat that lumbered through a yard in early morning light, probably looking for breakfast.

UNR Extension Native Plant Sale

UNR Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County are hosting a Native plant sale on Saturday, May 18 at the River Fork Ranch (The Nature Conservancy) located at 381 Genoa Ln. Minden, NV.

The event is from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

In an extremely rare display of colors, the aurora borealis was spotted throughout Northern Nevada Friday night as captured by multiple Carson Now readers. Click on each photo to expand.

This disruption solely affects the non-emergency dispatch line and does not impact access to emergency services via 911. In a systematic approach to improve water quality, Lyon County Utilities will be conducting water main flushing Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14-15 in the Rose Peak area (roughly between Flowery Avenue and Sheep Camp Road) in Dayton, Nev.

The 2nd annual Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival is returning May 17-19 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville. This is a free community event that benefits the Center for Hope and Healing.

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.
