This is a year unprecedented for Carson City students. High school seniors, and our local high schools are getting creative with the ways they seek to honor their graduating students.

In this edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer sits down with Linda Belgray to watch trailers and talk about this year's upcoming slate of movies to be shown at the 7th annual International Film Festival, hosted by Friends of the Carson City Library.

Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. The Capital City Community Band will present its annual “Salute To Young Musicians” concert on Sunday, March 1, 2020, at 3 p.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson Community Center.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. Restaurants in Carson City will host Valentine’s Day specials on Friday. The Carson City Celtic Music series will be at the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday featuring Fortunate Strangers. Combined with live music and comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Carson City region is in store for a busy three days. Read on for more information.

The Capital City Community will, once again, welcome the holidays with a free concert in the Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center on Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.

Safe Grad has been a tradition for Carson High since 1988, started by community volunteers, after a series of graduation incidents and deaths related to alcohol. Safe Grad is a parent and community sponsored all-night party that begins the evening after graduation at the Carson City Community Center, and this year they are looking for volunteers to help fulfill their mission.

Good morning Carson City! It's finally starting to feel like Spring around here. The weather today is going to be another gorgeous day, sunny with highs of 56, a low of 28, and 52 percent humidity. On the schedule today we have a ton of wonderful events, from a live music benefit for the homeless, to pollinator workshops, a Roller Derby match, a Veteran's Remembrance Day celebration at Mills Park, and much more. Come watch a doubleheader March 30 as your local Carson Victory Rollers battle it out with the Lockeford Liberators and the Carson Junior Victory Rollers take on the Little Rascals. The event takes place at the Carson Community Center gym.

Both Carson High School Wind Ensemble and Concert Bands achieved superior ratings, the highest possible rating.

Twelve bands from Churchill, Douglas, Fernley and Dayton competed in the Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators Association High School Band Festival at the Carson City Community Center on March 7, 2019.

Upon exiting the final dress rehearsal for the Pinkerton Ballet Nutcracker Friday afternoon, we were fortunate to see a hawk with its prey on the stairs in front of the Carson City Community Center.

Sierra Regional Roller Derby bestowed a crowd at the Carson Community Center Gym Saturday with an afternoon full of fanny packs, fishnets, big hair and bruises at the Eighties-themed mixer scrimmage match.

Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.

“Peanutcracker – The Story In A Nutshell,” is a kid-sized version of the holiday classic, “The Nutcracker,” told in 45-minutes by 50 local school school children. Performed by Sierra Nevada Ballet, there will be performances Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center.

The Capital Community Band, under the direction of Richard Doede, will tie a big red bow around 2017 by presenting a Patriotic and Holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017. The free concert will be presented in the Bob Boldrick Theatre in the Carson Community Center.

Every year, Ormsby County Education Association and the Carson City School District sponsor “The Light of Education” awards, and this year’s CHS winners are Ann Britt, Johanna Davis, and first year teacher Monica Chavez who said, “I felt very shocked, honored, and blessed about winning the award.”

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t due for any more wet stuff today, but the air will have a bitter chill to it. The monthly lecture at the Nevada State Museum will explore what it took to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Nevada. Sing your heart out with J and M Productions at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. • Senior Issues at the Nevada State Legislature

We’ll wake up to sunshine, but some snow may be in the cards this afternoon. Please drive safe when it’s slick out. ‘Our Story, Inc.’ takes you on a tour of Black History in Northern Nevada in the foyer of the Legislature; they’ll be on hand at the Carson Library this evening for a special Black History Month Celebration. Get a jump on spring cleaning and lend a hand to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. You’ll find their clothing drive at Red’s Old 395 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Show off your skills at Retro Replay if you fancy yourself a Smash Bros.

Under the direction of Richard Doede, the Capital City Community Band will perform its annual “A Salute to Young Musicians” concert with two choirs from Carson City, Fritsch Elementary School with Nicole Melsheimer, Conductor and Mark Twain Elementary School with Christina Bourne, Conductor, and the Carson High School Clarinet Choir.

They play rough, but their hearts are in the right place.

We know better than trying to predict springtime weather in the Sierra foothills. A new wave of showers is expected Monday, but it could show up whenever it likes. Rain or shine, Earth Day in Reno’s Idlewild Park is always fun and informative. See Marlon Brando on the big screen as Galaxy Theater offers two showings of ‘On the Waterfront.’ The Carson City Symphony welcomes guest soloist, Albert Lee, to the stage during today’s Spring Fling Concert.

Into every life a little rain must fall, and we just got plenty. The tulips and lilac blooming around town will be pleased. Unfortunately, it could make for soggy feet if you’ve got any outdoor activities planned. Lucky for us, plenty of fun can be found indoors. Hit the Carson Mall for Cowgirls and Lipstick or learn about rare coins at the Nevada State Museum. Meet author Joe Crowley at Browsers' Corner Book Store or read to therapy dogs at the Carson City Library. There's something for everyone on this list, so take a look and have a great weekend, Carson City.

Thank goodness we are only two months from the first day of summer; spring is such an unpredictable season. Blustery today, rainy tomorrow, the threat of some snow in a few days. Take advantage of a nice day whenever it appears. Bike night at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar is one way to do that.

Film lovers won't want to miss next month's Carson City International Film Weekend. Not only will audiences enjoy award-winning international and independently made films, but the weekend showings and discussions are free.

National Honor Society is hosting its winter blood drive. It will take place on January 28 in the library from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is open to community members.  Refreshments and a free cholesterol test is available with each donation. Appointments can be made online at bloodhero.com, Blood drive: Carson High School, Code word: Senators. Please come and support such a worthy cause. Find the hero in you and save three lives!

The reconstruction of Carson Street in the downtown corridor will be proceeding as planned this year, said Carson City Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger.

Construction is expected to begin in March and last until November, Pittenger said, but the project is not going to interfere with Nevada Day Parade festivities.

By then, he said, all of the messy work will be finished and what’s left will be mostly clean-up items.

“We will be open for Nevada Day,” Pittenger said. “When we’re done, Carson Street will be one lane in each direction.”
