St. Marys Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City to hold Saturday reception
St. Marys Arts and Retreat Center in Virginia City will host a reception for its art show “a winter tonic” on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m. The reception will feature the work of Danish artist Nes Lerpa, Megan Berner, Jessica White and Dusty Roads artists.
Folk musicians Paula Frazer, Jacob Aranda, and David Cuetter will perform. In addition, the exhibit will include the best work from students in the Reno High School Advanced Art class. Kelsey Rolling, Emily Jiang, and Tyler Hart are students of Lauren Gandolfo.
“We are very pleased with the vibrant and diverse array of art we will be able to present,” said Frances Melhop, executive director of the Center. “The galleries are full of work from established international and local artists, we are also showing works from young artists just emerging from University Fine Art School programs and High School advanced Art programs. There is something here for everyone.”
Nes Lerpa is a visiting Artist in Residence this fall. He was born in Denmark and lives and works in the hills behind Piacenza in Northern Italy, and in the woods north of Copenhagen. Lerpa made his début in 1960, and since then his works have been exhibited in many European countries, and in the U.S., China and India. The artist works with large canvases featuring the bold abstract presentation of colors.
During his residency in Nevada, Lerpa has given presentations throughout the region. He is teaching a four day workshop at St. Marys Art Center on Nov. 20-23, 2014. The workshop is available for all levels of painters. Information on the class is available here. Scholarships are available for Comstock Region students and artists by going here.
A native Nevadan, Megan Berner is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa who currently lectures at the University of Nevada, Reno. She teaches photography and video and currently is a member of the Reno Arts and Cultural Commission. “Her work is influenced not only by her Nevada home but also by the vast prairies of the Midwest,” said Melhop.
Jessica White creates portraits with oil and drawings in pen and ink. Her work was featured at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2014. Her portraits are contemporary representations of men and women, which upon commencing painting bare no relevance to the actual person themselves. White creates her own narrative using the human framework of her family members.
San Francisco based Folk musicians Paula Frazer with Jacob Aranda and David Cuetter will provide entertainment during the reception. Information on the reception is available here.
St. Marys Art and Retreat Center is located in the historic Virginia City Hospital, opened in 1876 and operated by the Daughters of Charity. The spacious four-floor building closed in the 1940s and was reopened in 1964 as an art center. Ample rooms provide gallery space, rooms for art workshops, and accommodations for visiting artists. “This is one of the more important art facilities in Northern Nevada,” said Molly Burnet, President of the Board of Trustees “The historic site is worth the visit, and the art it exhibits is remarkable.”
The Art and Retreat Center is asking for a $2 donation from those who attend the reception. For details call 775-847-7774 or visit www.stmarysartcenter.org.
