SILVER CITY, Nev. — Carson City’s recognition of the importance of arts and culture to a thriving community is very much in line with that of nearby Silver City. The Comstock town is known as an "Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center" due to the work residents have contributed in the fields of arts and cultural resources.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Virginia City is one of 13 churches nationwide to be selected for the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program that pledges funds toward saving historic churches.

American Flat remembered at Saturday film, photo show and lecture

SILVER CITY, Nev. — There will be a free event called “Remembering American Flat” this Saturday on the Comstock. The event includes three parts – a screening of a new documentary that covers the history of the American Flat mill from its inception in the 1920s to its demolition in 2014; a short lecture about the unique qualities of the mill by consulting architectural historian and industrial archaeologist Ron Reno, PhD; and a pop-up show with locals’ rare photos of the site.

Spend a week this Summer workin' on a National Historic Landmark railroad in Ely, and the best preserved standard gauge railroad in America. Experience what it was like during the golden age of railroading. Become an integral part of the preservation in-progress.

As part of the crew you will help get a train over the hill and back again safely. In the shop, you will have hands on experience maintaining the locomotives and cars. It is dirty, oily, greasy work. Without it, trains don't run. As part of the track crew, you will see up close what it takes to keep the railroad running.

Silver City Post Office Hosts Display on Resident Artist Program

Silver City, Nevada - The Silver City Post Office, established in 1860, has a display case with changing collections that highlight local history as well as current programs.

Display of Work by Visiting Artists: For those who missed a December 2016 show featuring the artwork, essays, poems, assemblages, and photographs created by visiting artists at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, some of the pieces are on display at the Silver City Post Office through March.

Artwork by Sophie Scott of New Zealand will be on display at the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City during the 2017 Legislative session. Look for it on the third floor near Ways and Means. Sophie’s painting, based on an 1860s photograph of Silver City, was created while she was a resident artist in Silver City in 2015.

McKeen motor car rides in Carson City featured this weekend to mark National Train Day

Nevada’s famous McKeen motor car will roll at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, Saturday and Sunday.

National Train Day is celebrated Saturday, May 7, in honor of the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah that marked completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Operating from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days, the McKeen offers passengers an authentic glimpse of its rich and important past.

Nevada Travel Network wins first place press association awards

In its first entry into the Nevada Press Association‘s annual awards competition the Gold Hill-based Nevada Travel Network was awarded first place in two of the three categories it entered.

The blue ribbon for ‘Best Writing Online’ was awarded to the monthly NevadaGram and First Place in the ‘Best Feature Story Online’ category went to David Toll for “A visit to the Belmont Mill and Hamilton."

Wild West ways of the Web saddle with free Wi-Fi in Old West Nevada town of Virginia City

While virtually the entire town of Virginia City remains true to its 1850s heritage, today’s visitor is now able to connect with the past through the future with the integration of free Wi-Fi. The “VC Visitor” access provides free 24-hour access with a simple email login for visitors in the business district.

Sign erected and destroyed in Silver City

Early in the week of May 3, persons unknown erected a sign near the junction of Main Street, Silver City (Highway 342), with the Truck Route (Highway 341) blaming Comstock Mining Inc., the Storey County Commissioners and the Nevada Department of Transportation for the closure of the highway (342) between Silver City and Gold Hill. Before dawn of the third day afterward, the sign had been obliterated and removed by a second party of persons unknown.

Virginia City tales told at special museum event with Ron and Susan James Jan. 22

Nevada writers Ron and Susan James bring stories from their latest book “A Short History of Virginia City” to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22.

Engaging speakers and experts in the state’s heritage, the couple will share historic Nevada tales of mining and the Old West. Their book includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than 30 buildings and sites including the Comstock National Historic District, now designated a National Historic Landmark.

St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City to host Dec. 6 Art Faire on the Comstock

The region's finest Nevada-made art will be featured Saturday, Dec. 6 at St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City with its first Artists and Artisans Art Faire on the Comstock.

Not only will all galleries be filled with art, the entire building will be full of local artists and creative folk from all over the Comstock region, showing and selling their work. The faire will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The art works range in style, medium, size and price from $5 to $8,000, so there will be something for everyone’s holiday shopping budget.

St. Marys Art and Retreat Center in Virginia City to hold Saturday reception

St. Marys Arts and Retreat Center in Virginia City will host a reception for its art show “a winter tonic” on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 from 1 to 4 p.m. The reception will feature the work of Danish artist Nes Lerpa, Megan Berner, Jessica White and Dusty Roads artists.

Folk musicians Paula Frazer, Jacob Aranda, and David Cuetter will perform. In addition, the exhibit will include the best work from students in the Reno High School Advanced Art class. Kelsey Rolling, Emily Jiang, and Tyler Hart are students of Lauren Gandolfo.
