Veterans Day 2019 events around Carson City, Northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe

Honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11 with a number of events happening around the capital city and Northern Nevada which began this week and will continue through Tuesday.

Here's a list of organized events, tributes and offers of gratitude to all those who have served our beloved country. If an event is not on this list, please let us know at news@carsonnow.org or comment below.

FRIDAY
Carson City school students are recognizing and honoring military men and women this week with Veteran’s Day displays and events. Veterans from all branches of military service, as well as families of students, have been encouraged to attend events Friday and Tuesday. Some events were held Thursday. Campus visitors should check in at the front office at each school site.

Eagle Valley Middle School, 4151 East Fifth Street
Vet Star Wall display, Friday through Tuesday, Nov. 8-12, in the main corridor of the school. Submitted and displayed on stars, the names of students’ family and friends who served in the armed forces will shine bright at Eagle Valley Middle School.

Bordewich-Bray Elementary School, 110 Thompson Street
Veteran’s Day Ceremony, Friday, Nov. 8, 8:35 a.m., in the back of the school by the flagpole. Students are encouraged to wear red, white, blue or camouflage.

Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Road
Veteran’s Day Assembly, Friday, Nov. 8, 10 a.m., in the multipurpose room. The event will be hosted by the fifth grade leadership team.

Mark Twain Elementary School, 2111 Carriage Crest Drive
Veteran’s Day Ceremony, Friday, Nov. 8, 8:35 a.m., out front by the flagpole.

Food specials, comedy shows offered free to veterans by Carson Nugget. Veterans who sign up for Veterans Club will receive two free tickets to comedian Rob Sherwood, with shows on Friday and Saturday night. Also offered, one free American breakfast at the Eatery on Veterans Day between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sign up and receive vouchers at the casino's Winner's Club.

SATURDAY
— Paper Poppies for Veterans at Nevada State Museum. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Handcrafting of paper poppies and the story behind them to honor veterans. The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 North Carson Street.

SUNDAY
The United States Marine Corps celebrates its Birthday on Sunday, November 10. The U.S. Marine Corps was formed as a security force of sorts, serving as an infantry unit aboard naval vessels and was responsible for protecting the ship's officers. Sometimes this was evident with the Marine's quarters positioned between the Officer's quarters and the rest of the ship - to serve as a buffer between them and the rest of the crew. Carson City
— Casino Fandango in Carson City offers a free buffet on Monday for veterans and active duty military. The buffet runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom. Go here for more information.

— The Fox Brewpub in Carson City offers veterans a free burger and beer on the house, al day Veterans Day. Members of the military are asked to present to their server their military ID, veterans hat, or proof of enlistment in the U.S. Armed Forces. Go here for more information.

— Free Spaghetti Lunch for Veterans and Active Military at the Carson Valley Inn, Minden. Free spaghetti lunch for all veterans and active military – plus one guest – on Monday in the Valley Ballroom from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Veterans and active military personnel simply present your military ID for entrance and lunch for you and your guest is on the Carson Valley Inn. If you don't have your ID, just briefly tell the host about your service to our country and the CVI will welcome you. Go here for more information.

Virginia City:
There will be a Veterans Day Parade Monday, Nov. 11 in Virginia City. The parade is from 11 to noon along C Street, Virginia City. A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve for our freedom. Come honor those past and current veterans of our armed forces. Go here for more information.

Reno
— There will be a Veterans Day Parade in Reno along Virginia Street, Monday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon. In northern Nevada, Reno is hosting its annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11, 2019. This year’s theme commemorates the centennial of Veterans Day, formally Armistice Day. NDVS will be participating in the parade again this year. Come and join us!

Sparks
There will be a Veterans Day ceremony and Imo Jima Re-enactment at the Sparks Marina on Monday morning. Please join us on November 11, 2019 as we celebrate Veterans Day with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza and Iwo Jima reenactment. South Lake Tahoe
American Legion Post 795 hosts Veterans Day ceremony. American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites residents and visitors to join members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion in honoring all veterans this Veterans Day. The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. Light refreshments will be served.

Formerly Armistice Day, November 11 commemorates the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War I in 1918. It is historically significant that this day continue to be observed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of the eleventh day to commemorate when the guns fell silent at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

South Lake Tahoe cemetery, Happy Homestead, is the final resting place for more than 560 veterans and each year our local veteran’s group, Vets in Counseling, places American flags on their gravesites to honor them on Veterans Day. Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the cemetery on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. to place the flags. Happy Homestead is located at 1261 Johnson Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

TUESDAY
— Seeliger Elementary School, 2800 South Saliman Road: Veteran’s Day Concert, Tuesday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m., in the multipurpose room. The event will feature an all-school choir, snacks and more.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.
