Veterans Day

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States will honor all Veterans, past and present, at our November Meeting. We will also pay tribute to our MIA’s and POW’s and celebrate the Birthdays of all our Military Services.

The Carson Comedy Club presents comedian Mike Betancourt, hosted by comedian Brian Lee, this Friday and Saturday at the Carson Nugget Loft. Veterans and active duty military get two free tickets to the Saturday, Nov. 13 show.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

A small airplane that made an emergency landing in a field Wednesday afternoon near Fremont Elementary School in Carson City was moved for tow to nearby Saliman Road, across from the school.

Join us in celebrating Veterans Day 2020. Due to most Veterans Day parades and other celebrations being cancelled this November because of COVID-19, Nevada Department of Veterans Services produced a video with support from the Nevada veterans and community leaders across the state highlighting what Veterans Day means to them, along with the following anniversaries:

— The 75th anniversary of the end of WWII;
— The 70th anniversary of the outbreak of Korean War;
— The 67th anniversary of the alliance between U.S.A. and the Republic of Korea; and
— The 30th Anniversary of the outbreak of the 1st Gulf War.

Historic Virginia City has always placed a strong emphasis on supporting those who have served our country. A walk down the wooden board sidewalks demonstrates this in the many memorial flags of those who gave their lives in service. Because honoring our veterans is so important, Virginia City will be holding a Veterans Day Cruise today, Wednesday, Nov. 11 beginning at 11 a.m. on C Street.

CARSON CITY — Today, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a proclamation naming Wednesday, November 11th as Veterans Day in honor of our Veterans that have served in our nation’s military. State offices will be closed for this official holiday.

Historic Virginia City has always placed a strong emphasis on supporting those who have served our country. Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

We could all benefit from stories about honor and heroes right now, especially during this era when extreme partisan politics have upended our country’s equilibrium. Some way, somehow higher roads need to be taken and it needs to start with our ruling political class. Maybe these poignant stories from years past can rekindle a sense of honor that seems in short supply these days.

Honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11 with a number of events happening around the capital city and Northern Nevada which began this week and will continue through Tuesday.

Heading into the Veterans Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days. Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. Events around the capital city Wednesday, Nov. 6 include gallery showings, a Veterans Day assembly at Sierra Lutheran High School, the first "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a presentation, "Nevada’s Ancient Rock Art: Art for All Times" hosted by Capital City Arts Initiative, storytelling at the Carson City Library and more.

CARSON CITY — Sierra Lutheran is inviting area veterans to attend a special Veterans Day assembly at the school on Wednesday, November 6, in the Norm Brauer Gymnasium from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m., as part of its annual “Remembering And Honoring Our Heroes.”

Dozens of military veterans, families and community members saluted the fallen during the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony at Mills Park Saturday.

The ceremony was presented by the Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

"Today we share a few moments with our fellow veterans, family and friends to reflect on what that war meant and what it means to us today,” said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.

On this date 100 years ago, armistice was signed ending World War I in Europe.

Veterans Day this year commemorates the 100th anniversary of World War I armistice, an agreement between the Allied Powers and Germany that brought an official end to hostilities in the "Great War."

A three-day pickleball tournament, hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, has taken over the Multipurpose Athletic Center (MAC) in Carson City over this Veterans Day weekend.
