Food and clothing drives on Saturday to benefit Carson City families in need
A food drive that brings federal employees together to collect food for those hungry in Carson City will be held Saturday following a successful event last weekend that netted more than 700 pounds in donations. Also underway Saturday is a clothing drive for families in need at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The “Feds Feed Families” drive will have a booth and food drop-off area at Grocery Outlet, 1831 North Carson Street this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Last weekend’s food drive brought in over 700 pounds of food that was collected for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. Items included 477 pounds of dry food, and another 224 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit from donations at the Carson City Farmers’ Market.
In Carson City, federal employees from USDA Rural Development, the Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal Highway Administration, and the United States Geological Survey have volunteered to assist with the food drive. In addition, the State of Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles recently joined the food drive, to reduce hunger in the community.
“The community response to this food drive has been amazing,” said USDA Rural Development Public Affairs Coordinator Kelly Clark. “We really appreciate Carson City residents’ willingness to step up to help their neighbors in need.”
Ongoing donations of canned foods or nonperishable dry foods can be made at the USDA Rural Development Office, located at 1390 S. Curry St. Collection bins are set up just inside the doors. The food drive will run through Aug. 28, 2013.

Meanwhile, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosts its fifth annual clothing drive to help families in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, and Dayton, Nevada communities get ready for school.
The event is open to the public on Saturday, August 10, from 9 a.m. until noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel located at 411 N. Saliman Road, Carson City.
David Haws, President of the church’s local organization, says some families may struggle to provide needed clothing as the new school year approaches. “This is our fifth annual clothing drive to help families obtain clothing and reduce the stress parents face in getting their children ready for the new school year,” said Haws.
Event organizers are also asking for clothing donations from the community. Drop off new or clean and gently used clothing on Friday, August 9, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 411 N. Saliman Road, Carson City.
Kelli Asp, President of the church’s local women’s organization, said she schedules the annual event in August to help families get ready for the new school year. “We invite the whole family to come out. We will have a selection of clothing ranging from infant to adult,” said Asp. She emphasized that all items are provided free of charge.
Providing service to others is central to the Mormon belief of following the example of Jesus Christ. This is a non-denominational event open to the public.
