Carson City arrests: Man jailed for suspicion of drugs, child endangerment
A 44 year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday night at 9:57 p.m. in the area of Reeves Street and N. Edmunds Drive for a host of alleged offenses, including two felonies, a gross misdemeanor and four misdemeanor violations, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.
Joshua Jay Copp was taken into custody for suspicion of felony drug possession and prohibited person in possession of a firearm after the red Ford Mustang he was driving was stopped for misdemeanor reckless driving.
According to the arrest report, the Mustang that Copp was driving had been observed by a Sheriff's deputy on patrol accelerating at a high rate of speed from U.S. Highway 50 East onto Fairview Drive.
When the Mustang passed the school zone sign with built-in radar, the speed reading was 48 miles per hour (mph) in a 35 mph zone.
The car then turned right onto N. Edmunds and sped north toward Brown Street. At that point, the deputy had activated the patrol vehicle's overhead lights in an effort to make a traffic stop on the Mustang, the report said.
After turning onto Brown Street, the Mustang finally pulled over on Reeves Street.
As the deputy approached the Mustang, its rear brake lights were still illuminated to indicate the brakes were applied and the vehicle still in gear, the report said.
The driver was ordered to put his hands up where they could be seen and he complied, the report said.
The deputy then opened the driver's side door and requested the driver to exit the vehicle, the report said, but the driver refused the officer's orders twice and was subsequently pulled out of the seat.
A male youth was observed seated on the front passenger side of the Mustang.
The deputy then placed the suspect driver against the driver's side rear of the vehicle, detained him in handcuffs and walked him back to the patrol vehicle for a weapons search, the report said.
The suspect's driver's license was recovered, identifying him as Joshua Copp.
A search of the suspect recovered a small, clear plastic baggie containing a white crystal-like substance consistent with and suspicious of methamphetamine, the report said.
Additional deputies, including a K-9 unit, arrived to assist. The K-9 officer gave a positive alert signal around the exterior of the Mustang, leading to an interior search.
A loaded black 9-mm handgun with a chambered bullet was recovered from inside the vehicle in the driver's side door pocket right next to the driver seat, the report said.
Items found wedged between the driver's seat and center console included a knife and an open alcohol container.
The male youth passenger was released to family and Copp was transported to the Carson City Jail, where he was booked for felony possession of 3.6 grams of meth, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, misdemeanor obstruction, reckless driving and open container. Bail: $27,043.
In other arrests:
— A New Plymouth, ID, man was arrested Saturday morning at 5:12 a.m. in the 4000 block of N. Carson Street for gross misdemeanor false fire alarm and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.
According to the arrest report, the Carson City Fire Department responded to a hotel fire alarm activated by a patron.
Sheriff's deputies also arrived to the scene and spoke with the reporting party (RP), a hotel employee, who stated she observed a guest walking around the lobby touching the wall-mounted fire alarms.
Another employee advised the guest not to mess with the fire alarms, but the latter proceeded minutes later down the hall toward his room where he allegedly pulled a fire alarm.
Contact was then made with the suspect at his room, where he admitted to activating the firearm alarm. He denied seeing or smelling any smoke.
The suspect instead said he pulled the alarm because he wanted to see if it worked before going into his room, because of the noise the alarm made.
The suspect denied having any medical or mental health issues, so he was detained in handcuffs and placed into custody.
Surveillance video footage recovered from the front office showed the suspect setting off the fire alarm. He was then transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $3,132.
