There's a new breakfast in town: Cafe at Adele's

Adele's is a Carson City landmark. This long-time restaurant — located in one of the oldest homes in town — attracts discriminating diners with its classical ambiance and reputation of its renown chef Charlie Abowd.

But now the restaurant is doing something new that will likely shake things up in Carson City early in the morning. They are serving breakfast.

When I first heard about this change, my first thought was, wow, I would love to taste what Charlie can do with eggs, but is there a market for high-end breakfast in this town, especially right now?

I was blown away by the answer. More about that in a minute.

When I went down to try out this new breakfast, Charlie's wife and co-owner of the restaurant Karen showed me some of the other changes. There is new carpeting. The table tops have been refinished, and the lace tablecloths are gone. New artwork hangs on the walls, some of it painted by Karen, others from the Artsy Fartsy Gallery in downtown Carson City.

And the new signs out in front also reflect the changes inside: Café at Adele's.

Looking at the breakfast menu, it suddenly became apparent why this change will work. I wasn't surprised by the delicious choices, but by the prices. Most items were in the same general range you would find at other breakfast places in town. Basically, you get Adele's fine-dining-quality food, service and ambiance for close to what you would pay at a national chain breakfast place.

If you don't believe me, the menu is below.

No words can do the food justice. The fresh-baked bear claw by pastry chef Elizabeth Moore will make you never want to touch the packaged versions again. The crab cake Eggs Benedict was beyond description, but I'm a sucker for anything that mixes eggs and fresh crab. The hash browns were fresh and crispy as they should be, but rarely are. The veggie black bean hash was something I was skeptical about, but turned out to be extraordinary. Other diners around us raved about the pancakes, waffles and omelets.

The food is so beautifully presented that you'll want to take pictures, if you can resist digging in long enough.

All of this in the elegant surroundings of Adele's, with soft music playing in the background, it makes you want to relax and enjoy the beginning of the new day. It's enough to get non-morning people (you know who you are) out of bed and looking forward to life before 8 a.m.

Maybe one of the specialty cocktails can provide some extra incentive for late risers, such as the Beermosa, a more masculine version of a Mimosa.

For those who can't get their minds around a traditional breakfast, try one of the breakfast pizzas.

Adele's is already well known as the place to be during the biennial sessions of the Nevada Legislature, popular with politicians and lobbyists. This new addition will likely turn it into the power breakfast place of choice during the next session.

The decision to add breakfast was a complicated one. Though the restaurant's dinner business had weathered the recession well, lunch was struggling. Getting rid of lunch would have saved money, but it also would have meant laying off several longtime employees the Abowds consider as family.

Their research showed there was an opening for a restaurant serving their kind of breakfast at a reasonable price, and that the breakfast service would help build lunch business as well.

So instead of laying off workers, they hired five new employees.

They have also reworked the lunch and dinner menus, featuring some lower prices as well (see below). Karen and Charlie’s youngest son Jeremiah worked with his father on all of the menus to help create something unique that has something for everyone.

Another byproduct of the breakfast pricing is that it opens up Adele's to more people who might not be able to afford a fancy dinner.

What makes Adele's special is the family behind it, and the immense passion they have for great food. Charlie is a fourth-generation chef whose family roots run back to Lebanon, a country known to foodies as a place where several cuisines of the world come together. In 2005, he was recognized by the James Beard Foundation as one of the great regional chefs in the country, and invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York City.

One of the most amazing things I have learned about Charlie is that he has never eaten fast food.

"Unless someone slipped in some Kentucky Fried Chicken into a picnic basket without me knowing," he said. To be able to live in this fast-food culture and completely avoid the quick fix of the drive-thru window is a great feat, at least for me. But for someone who loves great food as much as Charlie, it just comes naturally.

On the morning I was there, I had the privilege of talking to Charlie's father Paul Abowd, who with his wife Adele created the basis for the restaurant we see today. Paul and Adele owned and operated two other restaurants in Reno before retiring in 2003. But that retirement was short lived as they soon began work on The Stone House Cafe, which is managed by daughter Cyrina. Adele died in 2004, but her spirit lives on in her family's restaurants.

Karen Abowd turned the family's passion for food in a new direction, spearheading the Greenhouse Project at Carson High School. The facility opened just a couple of months ago, and Karen said they are ready to harvest their first crop of lettuce, to be given to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center to help needy families.

An interior designer, Karen was in charge of the recent remodel of the restaurant. Her paintings that hang on the walls are for sale, with proceeds going to the Greenhouse Project.

Cafe at Adele's is open for breakfast 7 a.m.to 11:30-ish Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

While expanding operations and hiring more people during these challenging economic times is risky, I wouldn't bet against the passion the people behind Adele's have to bring great food to Carson City.
