The Carson City and Quad-County region is experiencing a downward trend of COVID-19 hospitalizations since the start of the new year. However, while rates of transmission for children and teenagers have remained low since the pandemic began, new reporting shows a significant increase in minors contracting the virus, according to statistics.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is reporting a fatal vehicle crash in Lyon County that happened late Sunday morning on US 95A and Quince Avenue in Silver Springs.

District Attorney Jason Woodbury has called for a coroner’s inquest relating to the Feb. 15, 2020 killing of Clint Garett Malone in Carson City. Malone, 37, died as the result of multiple stab wounds inflicted at a residence on Woodside Drive.

On January 6, 2021 the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office ended a three-week investigation into the death of Jason Kaspian. Kaspian was found dead in his Vista Grande Drive apartment on Dec. 19, 2020 of a suspected overdose.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Reno native Dawn Wells, who starred as Mary Ann in the popular 1960s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island,” died Wednesday of causes related to COVID-19 in Los Angeles, according to her publicist. She was 82.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020 that there are 91 new cases and 150 additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 8,755, with 4,169 recoveries and 106 deaths; 4,480 cases remain active.

We are reporting 5 additional deaths due to COVID-19 in the Quad-County Region. CCHHS is also reporting 176 new cases and 29 additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County Region. This brings the total number of cases to 8,162, with 4,499 recoveries and 86 deaths; 4,499 cases remain active.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is joining forces with other Nevada law enforcement agencies during this 2020 holiday season to enforce impaired driving laws and keep impaired drivers off of Nevada roadways. Officers will be out in force from Dec. 21 through Jan. 4, 2021.

In our region, as well as in many areas across the country, there have been massive spikes in COVID-19 transmissions over the past few months. Even as restaurants and bars were reopened, daily positive cases were generally staying within single digits inside the Quad-County region.

However, between October and December, both test positivity rates as well as overall cases — and deaths — have seen a massive increase. Local health organizations are now not only fighting against the disease, but against misinformation campaigns as well.

When Bobby Kennedy was tragically shot and killed in 1968, his killer was set upon and wrestled to the ground by Rafer Johnson. For those too young to remember, Rafer Johnson was the first black captain of a United States Olympic Team, and was crowned the best all-around athlete in the world when he won the decathlon in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the pedestrian who died in Carson City on Dec. 2 that involved multiple vehicles at the intersection of North Carson Street and Silver Oak Drive.

Nevada Indian Commission Commissioner Lori Pasqua will be honored with a posthumous Bachelor of Arts degree by the University of Nevada-Reno at its winter commencement on Saturday. Her family will accept this honorary degree on her behalf.

Former Carson City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover, who served nearly 40 years of public service including elected seats in the Nevada Legislature, died on Monday. According to the Nevada Appeal he died of pneumonia caused by a COVID-19 infection.

Holly Marie Shrum died in Carson City, NV on Monday October 12, 2020 surrounded by her family. Holly was 44 years old.

A South Lake Tahoe man has been identified as the victim of a fatal head-on crash that happened Tuesday night on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove in Douglas County.

UPDATE: Both lanes were reopened shortly before midnight Tuesday. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
