Senator Square: Carson High celebrates 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair this weekend

Carson High’s 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair is Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 8p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be the best one yet with lots of new vendors as well as all your favorites. Come spend some time – great food, entertainment, a raffle, Santa, book sale, and of course, amazing and unique gifts for everyone. Admission for adults on Friday evening is only $2 and includes a raffle ticket as well as re-entry privileges on Saturday.

Saturday’s admission price is $1.50 or only $1 with a canned food donated for FISH in Carson City. As always, children and K-12 students are FREE. All proceeds go to benefit CHS student groups — last year’s craft fair provided stipends for more than 20 clubs as well as ten senior scholarships of $500 each. Support your school and community by attending this year’s craft fair.

Future Business Leaders of America
Future Business Leaders of America thanks Bryton Lewis, former Carson High School graduate, for stopping by the monthly meeting to share his experiences in the business world and the importance of networking. In other FBLA news, the club is currently holding two fundraisers. Coffee sales will continue as well as a raffle for a $100 cash card and Thanksgiving food basket. Raffle tickets are $1 each.

The drawing will be on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the craft fair. Contact a FBLA member to purchase tickets or coffee. You can also contact their adviser Mrs. Golik at 283-1737 for more information. All funds raised will be used to send students to state and national FBLA competitions in the spring. All FBLA members currently competing in the Stock Market Game need to meet on Wednesday in Mr. McHenry’s room. All FBLA members interested in competing at state need to meet on Tuesday in Mrs. Golik’s room.

Volleyball Thanks
The CHS Volleyball team would like to thank their fans for all of the support this season. We have the greatest fans, parents, players, and contributors. A special thank you goes to Dick Campagni Capital Ford in Carson City for their continued and ongoing support.

Key Club
Key Club members volunteered time at the Salvation Army this weekend helping stuff boxes for families so they can celebrate a bountiful Thanksgiving. It was a rewarding experience and our members learned the value of volunteering. We will have several other similar events as the holidays are upon us.

Student of the Week
This week's Student of the Week is Kamile Soderstrom. Kamile is a freshman at Carson High. She is also a member of our girls’ freshmen volleyball team. Kamile has an excellent attitude, works extremely hard, and is always willing to help others. You rock Kamile!

Senior Spotlight
This week’s senior spotlight features Margaret Duvall. Margaret has taken a rigorous class load of honors and AP classes since freshman year and currently holds a GPA of 4.45. This year she is taking a full load of mostly AP classes, above and beyond what she needs to graduate.

Margaret has achieved more than just academically during high school. She has served as her class representative the past two years, and is currently senior class treasurer. She acted as chair of the homecoming dance and was instrumental in raising funds so the homecoming tradition could continue. Margaret has been a member of National Honor Society the past three years and has been active in FBLA for four years, serving as president and vice president. She has won numerous awards as a member of FBLA and has competed at the state and national levels.

Outside of school Margaret works as a math tutor and tutors ESL English at the community center. She is a youth leader at her church and has earned the bronze and silver awards in Girl Scouts. Her family is currently hosting an International Exchange student from Viet Nam.

Margaret plans to attend UNR next year. She wants to major in finance or economics and work as a financial advisor or for the U.S. Dept. of Treasury. Her dream is to spend a year studying in Japan and eventually get a JD MBA from Harvard. CHS is extremely proud of the contributions Margaret has made to our school and our community and we wish her the best of luck.
